The Subaru EJ202 is a 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated
flat-four gasoline engine belonging to the Phase II SOHC generation of Subaru’s
legendary EJ series. Introduced around 1998, this engine served as a workhorse
in Subaru’s Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) and select export regions throughout
the late 1990s and early 2000s. The EJ202 was engineered to provide the smooth
power delivery, compact packaging, and low center of gravity characteristic of
Subaru’s horizontally opposed engine architecture, while prioritizing fuel
efficiency and drivability for daily commuter applications.
The EJ202 represents the evolution of the EJ series into its Phase II
configuration, which introduced a relocated thrust bearing to the fifth main
bearing position and a redesigned cylinder block for increased rigidity and
reduced vibration. The engine utilizes a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) per
cylinder bank with four valves per cylinder, actuated by rocker arms with
screw-and-locknut valve adjusters - a departure from the hydraulic lash
adjusters used in earlier EJ engines.
The open-deck aluminum block and multi-point
fuel injection system were optimized for naturally aspirated operation,
delivering a balance of low-end torque and reliability that made the
EJ202 a popular choice across Subaru’s compact and mid-size vehicle
range.
The EJ202 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, naturally aspirated flat-four
gasoline engine configured for longitudinal mounting in front-engine,
all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive vehicle architectures. Its
horizontally opposed configuration provides inherent primary balance and
a low center of gravity.
Engine Type: Flat-4 (horizontally opposed), 4-cycle, water-cooled,
naturally aspirated.
Displacement: 1,994 cc (121.7 cu.in).
Bore and Stroke: 92.0 mm (3.62 in) x 75.0 mm (2.95 in).
Compression Ratio: 10.1:1.
Valvetrain: SOHC, 16-valve (4 valves per cylinder) with belt drive.
Fuel System: Multi-point electronic fuel injection (MPFI).
Intake Air Measurement: Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor.
Firing Order: 1-3-2-4.
Redline: 6,500 rpm.
Maximum Power: 93-101 kW (125-135 hp) at 5,600 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 181-186 Nm (133-137 lb-ft) at 3,600 rpm.
The cylinder block is manufactured from aluminum alloy
using a high-pressure die-casting process, a material selection that reduces
overall engine mass and aids in heat dissipation. The block features the
horizontally opposed configuration with two cylinder banks arranged at 180
degrees, each containing two cylinders. An open-deck design is employed, where
the cylinder bores are supported at the top only by the water jacket perimeter,
enhancing cooling efficiency around the upper cylinder area - a design suitable
for naturally aspirated operation but not recommended for turbocharged
conversions.
Cast-in-place, iron-coated aluminum cylinder bores are machined directly into
the block casting. The Phase II design introduced several refinements over
earlier EJ blocks, including a relocated thrust bearing to the fifth main
bearing position (rear of the crankshaft) for improved crankshaft stability and
reduced vibration. The block incorporates a deep-skirt design extending below
the crankshaft centerline, with five main bearing caps. A cast aluminum oil pan
is bolted to the lower crankcase.
Block Material: Aluminum alloy
Bore Diameter: 92.0 mm (3.62 in)
Main Bearing Configuration: Five main bearings, thrust bearing at number five
position
The cylinder heads are constructed from aluminum alloy,
with separate castings for each cylinder bank. Each head utilizes a SOHC
valvetrain with four valves per cylinder - two intake and two exhaust - actuated
by rocker arms. The camshafts are driven by a reinforced rubber timing belt from
the crankshaft, with an automatic spring-loaded tensioner maintaining belt
tension. The engine is of interference design; timing belt failure results in
valve-to-piston contact.
A defining feature of the EJ202 valvetrain is the use of screw-and-locknut
manual valve adjusters, a departure from the hydraulic lash adjusters found in
earlier EJ engines. This design requires periodic manual inspection and
adjustment of valve clearance. The rocker arms are mounted on a rocker shaft,
with each rocker incorporating an adjustment screw and lock nut for precise
clearance setting. The combustion chambers are of a pent-roof design with
centrally located spark plugs, optimizing flame propagation.
Head Material: Aluminum alloy
Valve Configuration: SOHC, 4 valves per cylinder with rocker arms and manual
adjusters
Valve Diameter (Intake): 35.0 mm (1.38 in)
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 30.0 mm (1.18 in)
Valve Stem Diameter: 6.0 mm (0.24 in)
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees
Valve Clearance (Cold, Intake): 0.20-0.24 mm (0.008-0.009 in)
Valve Clearance (Cold, Exhaust): 0.23-0.27 mm (0.009-0.011 in)
The EJ202 employs a multi-point electronic fuel
injection (MPFI) system with sequential injection. Four fuel injectors are
mounted in the intake manifold runners, positioned to spray fuel directly onto
the back of the intake valves. This port injection design provides excellent
air-fuel mixture preparation and maintains intake valve cleanliness.
The intake system utilizes a manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor rather than
a mass airflow (MAF) sensor, simplifying the intake tract and reducing potential
failure points. The MAP sensor measures intake manifold pressure to calculate
air density, with the engine control unit (ECU) determining fuel delivery based
on this input along with throttle position, coolant temperature, crankshaft
position, and oxygen sensor feedback. A fuel pressure regulator maintains
constant fuel pressure relative to intake manifold vacuum.
Injection Type: Multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection
Intake Air Measurement: Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
Fuel Pressure: 294-314 kPa (42.6-45.5 psi) with vacuum line disconnected
Fuel Injector Resistance: 10.0-14.0 Ohms
Fuel Requirement: 87 octane or higher
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design utilizing a gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft.
The oil pump draws lubricant from a cast aluminum oil pan through a mesh
strainer and circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter before
entering the main oil gallery. From the gallery, pressurized oil is distributed
to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings,
rocker arm assemblies, and timing belt tensioner.
A pressure relief valve integrated into the oil pump maintains system pressure
within operational limits. The oil pan incorporates a windage tray to reduce oil
aeration at high engine speeds. The horizontally opposed configuration requires
careful oil control to ensure adequate lubrication to all cylinders under all
operating conditions, with internal baffles within the oil pan and crankcase
designed to maintain oil pickup during cornering.
Oil Type: SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30 (API SJ, SL, or higher)
Oil Capacity (with filter): 4.0-4.5 liters (4.2-4.8 US qt)
Oil Pressure (at 3,000 rpm): 294-392 kPa (42.6-56.9 psi)
Oil Pressure (at idle): 98 kPa (14.2 psi) minimum
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled
design engineered to manage the thermal load of a flat-four engine. A cross-flow
aluminum radiator with an electric cooling fan provides cooling capacity. A
centrifugal-type water pump, driven by the timing belt, circulates coolant
through the cylinder block, cylinder heads, and heater core.
A wax-pellet thermostat regulates coolant flow to maintain optimal operating
temperature, with a bypass circuit that allows the engine to warm rapidly. The
cooling system is designed to provide uniform cooling across both cylinder
banks, maintaining consistent thermal expansion across the aluminum block and
head interface. The flat-four configuration requires careful coolant routing to
ensure even distribution to all four cylinders.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors
Coolant Capacity: 6.5-7.0 liters (6.9-7.4 US qt)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82-86 °C (180-187 °F)
Thermostat Full-Open Temperature: 95 °C (203 °F)
Radiator Cap Pressure: 108-127 kPa (15.7-18.4 psi)
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, timing belt-driven
Ignition System: Distributorless ignition system with
two ignition coils operating in a wasted-spark configuration, with each coil
firing two cylinders (one on each bank). The system incorporates a crankshaft
position sensor and camshaft position sensor for precise ignition timing
control. A knock sensor mounted on the cylinder block allows the ECU to retard
ignition timing under detonation conditions.
Intake System: A two-piece composite plastic intake manifold with a plenum
chamber designed to enhance low-end torque. The MAP sensor is mounted directly
on the intake manifold. The throttle body features a mechanically operated
butterfly valve on early applications and an electronically controlled throttle
on later variants.
Exhaust System: Stainless steel exhaust manifolds from each cylinder bank merge
into a Y-pipe configuration before entering a catalytic converter. Heated oxygen
sensors are mounted upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter for fuel
trim feedback and catalyst efficiency monitoring.
Timing Drive: A reinforced rubber timing belt with integral teeth drives the
camshafts from the crankshaft sprocket. The belt routes around idler pulleys and
is tensioned by an automatic spring-loaded hydraulic tensioner. The engine is of
interference design; timing belt failure results in valve-to-piston contact.
