The Saab Z19DTH is a 1.9-liter, 16-valve turbocharged
diesel engine developed by the Fiat-GM Powertrain joint venture. Introduced in
the mid-2000s, the Z19DTH replaced older Isuzu and Opel-sourced diesel units in
the Saab lineup, offering improved refinement, fuel economy, and tuning
potential.
Marketed under the 1.9 TiD designation in Saab vehicles, the engine features a
cast iron cylinder block, aluminum alloy cylinder head, dual overhead camshafts,
and a Bosch common rail direct injection system with a variable nozzle turbine
(VNT) turbocharger. The Z19DTH was the high-output single-turbo variant within
the Saab diesel range, delivering 150 hp and 320 Nm of torque. It powered the
Saab 9-3 and 9-5 across multiple model years, meeting Euro 4 emissions standards
with diesel particulate filter (DPF) equipment on most variants.

lash adjusters are incorporated, eliminating routine manual valve clearance
adjustments.
The cylinder block is manufactured from cast iron with
an open-deck design. Bore diameter measures 82.0 mm (3.23 in). The cast iron
construction provides the rigidity required to withstand elevated cylinder
pressures generated by the common rail injection system and turbocharging. The
crankshaft is forged steel with eight counterweights, supported by five main
bearings.
The block incorporates an integrated oil
gallery system feeding the main bearings, connecting rods, and
turbocharger. Pressed-in cast iron cylinder liners are utilized, with
the bores machined to a plateau honed finish. The engine incorporates a
balancer shaft system to reduce secondary vibrations.

deactivation valves) that alter intake port velocity at low engine speeds to
improve combustion efficiency and reduce emissions. The flaps are actuated by a
vacuum-operated control unit.
The fuel system employs Bosch common rail direct
injection with third-generation technology. Injection Type: Direct injection
into the combustion chamber with centrally mounted injectors. Injector
Configuration: Solenoid-actuated injectors with multi-hole nozzles. The system
utilizes up to five injection events per combustion cycle: pilot injection,
pre-injection, main injection, and two post-injection events for DPF
regeneration.
Fuel Pressure: Low-pressure circuit supplies fuel from the in-tank pump at
3.5-4.0 bar (51-58 psi). A high-pressure mechanical pump driven by the timing
belt elevates pressure to a maximum of 1,600 bar (23,206 psi). High-Pressure
Pump: Bosch CP1 or CP3 radial piston pump with a fuel metering valve controlling
rail pressure based on engine demand.
Engine Management System: Bosch EDC16 ECU with integrated boost control,
managing injection timing, rail pressure, glow plug operation, and DPF
regeneration. Fuel Filtration: Spin-on cartridge fuel filter with integrated
water separator and water-in-fuel sensor. Intake Manifold: Composite plastic or

controlled throttle body.
The lubrication system is a full-flow, pressurized
design utilizing a rotor-type oil pump driven by the crankshaft. Oil Pump Type:
Internal gear (gerotor) pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft, housed
within the front timing cover assembly. Oil Capacity: 4.3-4.8 liters (4.5-5.1
qt) including oil filter replacement. Recommended Oil Viscosity: 5W-30 or 5W-40
fully synthetic.
Oil Quality Requirement: ACEA C2 or C3 (low-ash formulation) for DPF-equipped
variants. ACEA B4 for non-DPF variants. Oil Pressure: At warm idle, pressure
ranges from 1.0-1.5 bar (14-22 psi). At 3,000 rpm, pressure reaches 3.5-4.5 bar
(51-65 psi). Oil Cooler: Liquid-to-oil plate-type heat exchanger integrated into
the oil filter housing, utilizing engine coolant for thermal stabilization.
Oil Filter: Cartridge-type filter housed within a modular housing. Crankcase
Ventilation: Closed PCV system with an integrated oil separator incorporated
into the valve cover. Blow-by gases are routed to the turbocharger compressor
inlet.
The cooling system is pressurized and utilizes a
centrifugal water pump driven by the timing belt. Water Pump Type: Centrifugal
pump with a die-cast aluminum housing and stamped steel impeller. Thermostat:
