The Saab B235L is the mid-range "Full Pressure Turbo"
(FPT) version of the 2.3-liter "Low Friction" H-engine family. Introduced in the
early 2000s, it was designed to bridge the gap between the entry-level B235E and
the high-performance B235R (Aero), offering a significant torque increase while
maintaining a smoother, more linear power delivery.
The B235L engine is recognized for its exceptional low-rpm torque, robust
construction, and the sophisticated Trionic 7 management system that integrated
ignition, fuel injection, and boost control into a unified architecture. Its
square bore and stroke configuration contributes to favorable torque
characteristics across a broad engine speed range.
The use of a Mitsubishi TD04HL-15T turbocharger, shared with the higher-output
B235R, provides significant tuning potential; with appropriate software
modifications, the B235L can achieve output levels approaching its Aero
counterpart. However, the engine's low-friction design, including lightweight
pistons and low-tension piston rings, makes it sensitive to oil quality and
maintenance intervals. The B235L requires meticulous attention to the positive
crankcase ventilation (PCV) system to prevent oil sludge formation, a known
consideration for this engine family.

The cylinder block is constructed from grey cast iron,
providing the exceptional rigidity required to withstand the elevated combustion
pressures generated by forced induction. The block features a closed-deck design
with reinforced cylinder walls and a deep-skirt configuration extending below
the crankshaft centerline. The five main bearing caps are cross-bolted to the
block structure for enhanced crankshaft support under high load conditions.
The block incorporates integrated oil galleries supplying the crankshaft
bearings, connecting rod bearings, and the turbocharger. The low-friction design
of this engine family is reflected in the use of lightweight pistons with
reduced ring tension compared to the preceding B234 engine, a modification aimed
at reducing parasitic losses and improving fuel efficiency.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
and houses the DOHC arrangement with four valves per cylinder. The pent-roof
combustion chambers are optimized for efficient mixture formation and flame
propagation under turbocharged operation. Intake valves measure 34.0 mm (1.34
in) in diameter, while exhaust valves measure 31.0 mm (1.22 in).
The exhaust valves are sodium-filled, a design feature that improves heat
transfer from the valve head to the stem, enabling the valves to withstand the
elevated exhaust gas temperatures generated by full-pressure turbocharged
operation. The valvetrain utilizes hydraulic lifters (lash adjusters) integrated
into the bucket tappets, eliminating manual valve clearance adjustments. The
camshafts are driven by a timing chain, with a hydraulic tensioner maintaining
consistent chain tension throughout the engine's operational life.
The fuel system is fully integrated with the Trionic 7
engine management system. Sequential multi-point fuel injection is employed,
with fuel injectors positioned in the intake ports. The system operates at a
nominal fuel pressure of 3.0 bar (43.5 psi), regulated by a returnless fuel
delivery system where the pressure regulator is located within the fuel tank.
The fuel injectors are controlled individually by the Trionic 7 control unit,
which calculates injection duration based on air mass measured by the mass
airflow sensor, engine speed, coolant temperature, and oxygen sensor feedback.
The intake manifold is constructed from plastic composite material to reduce
weight and thermal conductivity. The system incorporates a fuel evaporative
emissions control system that purges fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into
the intake manifold under appropriate operating conditions.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed, wet-sump type
utilizing a rotor-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft. The pump
is driven directly by the crankshaft, ensuring immediate oil pressure upon
startup. Oil is drawn from a stamped steel oil pan through a baffled strainer
before pressurization. A full-flow cartridge-type oil filter is mounted
externally on the cylinder block.
The system supplies lubricant to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod
bearings, camshaft bearings, hydraulic lifters, timing chain tensioner, and the
turbocharger center bearing. An oil-to-water heat exchanger integrated into the
oil filter housing maintains oil temperature within optimal operating ranges.
The low-friction piston ring design, while beneficial for efficiency, results in
increased combustion gas bypass (blow-by) compared to higher-tension ring
designs, necessitating an effective PCV system to prevent oil contamination.
The cooling system is a pressurized, water-cooled setup
utilizing a centrifugal water pump driven by the engine's serpentine accessory
belt. A wax-type thermostat with a rated opening temperature of 90°C (194°F)
regulates the engine operating temperature. Coolant circulates through the
cast-iron cylinder block and aluminum cylinder head before passing through a
cross-flow radiator equipped with an electric cooling fan controlled by the
Trionic 7 control unit.
An additional coolant circuit serves the turbocharger bearing housing, providing
cooling after engine shutdown to prevent oil coking. The system incorporates a
pressurized expansion tank with a coolant level sensor that alerts the driver to
low coolant conditions. The electric cooling fan operates at multiple speeds
based on coolant temperature and air conditioning system demand.
The exhaust system incorporates a cast-iron manifold
feeding the turbocharger. A close-coupled catalytic converter is positioned
downstream of the turbocharger to reduce light-off time and lower cold-start
emissions. The system includes two oxygen sensors (upstream and downstream of
the catalytic converter) for closed-loop fuel control and catalyst monitoring.
The B235L utilizes the Saab Direct Ignition (DI) system
with a black cassette housing the ignition coils. This cassette-style assembly
contains four individual ignition coils and the necessary control circuitry,
mounted directly over the spark plugs without high-tension leads. The Trionic 7
system controls spark timing individually for each cylinder based on engine
speed, load, coolant temperature, and knock sensor input. The ignition cassette
also houses the ionization sensing system, which monitors combustion quality and
provides feedback for misfire detection and knock control.
The B235L is equipped with a Mitsubishi TD04HL-15T
turbocharger featuring a 5 cm2 turbine housing. This turbocharger unit is shared
with the higher-output B235R Aero engine, providing substantial tuning headroom.
The turbocharger incorporates a water-cooled bearing housing and an integral
wastegate controlled by the Trionic 7 system via an electronically actuated
boost control solenoid. Maximum boost pressure in factory calibration is
regulated to approximately 0.8-1.0 bar (11.6-14.5 psi), depending on operating
conditions.
Timing System: The camshafts are driven by a single-row
timing chain. The system consists of a chain connecting the crankshaft sprocket
to the intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets. A hydraulic chain tensioner,
supplied with oil pressure from the lubrication system, maintains consistent
chain tension. The timing cover incorporates the necessary guides to ensure
proper chain routing.
Trionic 7 Engine Management: The T7 system integrates ignition timing, fuel
injection, boost control, idle speed control, and emissions management within a
single control unit. The system utilizes a mass airflow sensor for load
detection and a knock sensor mounted on the cylinder block for combustion
monitoring. The control unit communicates with the vehicle's other electronic
systems via the CAN bus network.
Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) System: The PCV system is critical to the
B235L's longevity. The system routes crankcase gases through a series of hoses
and a PCV valve to the intake manifold for combustion. The system incorporates
an oil separator integrated into the cylinder head to reduce oil carryover. A
PCV update kit (designated as Kit 6) was released by Saab to improve system
effectiveness and reduce the risk of oil sludge accumulation.
