The Saab B207L is a 2.0-liter inline-four turbocharged
gasoline engine from the GM Ecotec family, serving as the mid-range Full
Pressure Turbo (FPT) powerplant for the second-generation Saab 9-3. Produced
between 2003 and 2011, the B207L represented Saab’s application of the
all-aluminum Ecotec architecture with a square bore-to-stroke ratio of 86.0 mm x
86.0 mm. It shared its displacement with the lower-output B207E but employed a
Garrett GT1752MS turbocharger operating at higher boost levels to deliver 175 hp
and 265 Nm of torque.
The engine was managed by the Saab Trionic 8 (T8) system, a 32-bit torque-based
engine management unit that used the spark plugs as combustion sensors for
precise control. Distinctive features included dual balance shafts integrated
into the cylinder block to reduce vibration, individual ignition coils replacing
the Direct Ignition cassette of earlier Saab engines, and the engine control
unit mounted directly to the intake manifold. The B207L was designated with a
lowercase "t" badge to distinguish it from the high-output "T" Aero variants,
and it powered the majority of Saab 9-3 models across sedan, SportCombi, and
convertible body styles.
Engine Type: 4-stroke, inline 4-cylinder, water-cooled turbocharged gasoline
engine.

Standard: 1.25-1.45 MPa (181-210 psi).
Minimum service limit: 1.05 MPa (152 psi).
Maximum permissible variation between cylinders: 0.10 MPa (15 psi).
The cylinder block is constructed from cast aluminum
alloy with a closed-deck design, incorporating cast-in gray iron cylinder liners
for wear resistance. The block features a deep-skirt configuration with the
cylinder walls extending below the crankshaft centerline to enhance structural
rigidity under the elevated cylinder pressures associated with turbocharged
operation. Five main bearings support the forged steel crankshaft, with bearing
caps secured by vertical bolts.
Dual counter-rotating balance shafts are integrated into the block, located on
either side of the crankshaft and driven by a chain from the crankshaft. These
shafts rotate at twice engine speed to cancel the secondary harmonic vibrations
inherent to large-displacement inline-four engines. The block incorporates a
structural aluminum oil pan that contributes to overall engine rigidity. Cast-in
coolant passages surround each cylinder for the full depth of the stroke, with a
water jacket extending between cylinders to provide uniform cooling.
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy
with a cross-flow design positioning intake ports on the rear side and exhaust
ports on the front side for transverse engine mounting. The dual overhead
camshafts are supported by five bearing journals each and are driven by a silent
timing chain from the crankshaft. The chain incorporates a hydraulic tensioner
and chain guides designed for the engine’s service life.
Valve actuation occurs through bucket-type tappets with hydraulic lash
adjusters, eliminating routine valve clearance adjustments. The intake valves on
certain production years are susceptible to wear, particularly on 2007-2009
models, due to metallurgical factors affecting valve stem hardness. The
pent-roof combustion chambers are configured with centrally located spark plugs
to optimize flame propagation under boosted conditions.
Number of Valves: 16 total (4 per cylinder).
Intake Valve Diameter: 34.0 mm (1.339 in).
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 29.0 mm (1.142 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 6.0 mm (0.236 in) for both intake and exhaust.
Valve Seat Inserts: Powder metal inserts for both intake and exhaust; exhaust
seats feature nickel-based alloy.
Valve Clearance: Hydraulic lash adjusters; no manual adjustment required.
Valve Timing (nominal)
Intake Opens: 5° BTDC.
Intake Closes: 45° ABDC.
Exhaust Opens: 45° BBDC.
Exhaust Closes: 5° ATDC.
The fuel system employs a returnless electronic
multipoint fuel injection design with sequential injection timing. A single
in-tank electric fuel pump delivers fuel through a stainless steel fuel rail
mounted to the intake manifold. The system operates at a nominal pressure
regulated by a pressure regulator integrated with the fuel pump module.
Each cylinder is served by a side-feed injector positioned to direct fuel spray
onto the back of the intake valves. The Trionic 8 engine management system uses
a torque-based strategy, calculating fuel delivery based on requested torque
rather than purely on airflow. The system incorporates a fuel pressure sensor to
maintain precise pressure control across varying load conditions.
Injectors: Side-feed, high-impedance; flow rate of 320-350 cc/min at 350 kPa.
Fuel Filtration: In-tank primary strainer and replaceable inline filter rated at
10 microns.
Fuel Pressure: 350-400 kPa (51-58 psi) at idle; maintained by returnless system.
Fuel Specification: Premium unleaded 95 RON minimum; 98 RON recommended for
maximum performance.
The lubrication system utilizes a gear-type oil pump
mounted within the front timing cover and driven directly by the crankshaft. The
pump draws oil from a baffled aluminum sump through a strainer screen and
delivers it to a full-flow disposable cartridge oil filter mounted on the
cylinder block. An integral oil cooler, using engine coolant, maintains oil
temperature under sustained high-load operation.
The system incorporates a pressure relief valve calibrated to maintain stable
pressure across the operating range. Main galleries distribute oil to the
crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, hydraulic
lash adjusters, and the balance shaft assembly. The turbocharger receives oil
through a dedicated supply line with a restricted orifice.
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven.
Oil Pressure (hot, at 3,000 rpm): 300-400 kPa (44-58 psi).
Oil Pressure (hot, idle): 100 kPa (15 psi) minimum.
Oil Capacity (with filter): 5.5 L (5.8 US qt).
Oil Specification: GM dexos2 5W-30 fully synthetic; Saab-approved 5W-30 meeting
ACEA A3/B4 specifications.
The cooling system employs a belt-driven centrifugal
water pump mounted to the front of the engine block. Coolant flows from the
radiator through the pump, then through the cylinder block water jacket, upward
into the cylinder head, and returns to the radiator through a thermostat
housing. A wax-pellet thermostat with a bypass circuit maintains operating
temperature stability.
The system incorporates a cross-flow aluminum radiator with a pressure-type
filler cap rated at 108-127 kPa (16-18 psi). A separate coolant circuit serves
the turbocharger bearing housing, with coolant circulating after engine shutdown
through natural convection to prevent oil coking. The engine control unit,
mounted directly to the intake manifold, relies on adequate cooling system
performance as it is subjected to significant heat soak from the engine.
Water Pump Type: Belt-driven centrifugal pump with cast aluminum housing and
stamped steel impeller. Coolant Capacity (engine and radiator): 7.0-8.0 L
(7.4-8.5 US qt) depending on heater core configuration. Thermostat Opening
Temperature: 90 °C (194 °F). Thermostat Fully Open Temperature: 102 °C (216 °F).
Coolant Specification: Ethylene-glycol based with aluminum-compatible corrosion
inhibitors; GM-approved long-life coolant; 50% concentration.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: Air enters through a paper-element air
cleaner housing with an integrated mass airflow sensor, then passes through the
Garrett GT1752MS turbocharger compressor. Compressed air is routed through an
air-to-air intercooler mounted in front of the radiator before entering the
intake manifold. The intake manifold is a composite construction with integrated
mounting for the Trionic 8 engine control unit. The manifold incorporates charge
air temperature and manifold absolute pressure sensors for engine management.
Exhaust System: Cast iron exhaust manifold with integrated mounting flange for
the turbocharger. The manifold is designed with a pulse converter configuration
to maximize turbine energy extraction. The exhaust system incorporates a
close-coupled catalytic converter and an underfloor muffler. A heated oxygen
sensor is positioned upstream of the catalytic converter for closed-loop fuel
control, with a downstream sensor for catalyst efficiency monitoring.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
Ignition System: Direct ignition system with four
individual coil-on-plug units, one per cylinder, eliminating spark plug wires.
This configuration replaced the Direct Ignition cassette used on earlier Saab
B205 and B204 engines. The Trionic 8 engine management unit uses the spark plugs
as combustion sensors, measuring ionization current to detect knock and misfire
in real time.
Electrical System: 12 V negative-ground electrical architecture. Starter motor
is a reduction-gear type with 1.4 kW output mounted to the transmission
bellhousing. Alternator output is 120 A or 150 A depending on vehicle
specification.
The Garrett GT1752MS turbocharger features a
water-cooled bearing housing and an internal wastegate controlled by an electric
actuator. The unit is sized for rapid spooling, achieving maximum torque from
2,500 rpm. The compressor wheel measures 52 mm (2.05 in) in diameter, while the
turbine housing incorporates a variable nozzle geometry design on certain
applications to improve low-end response.
Trionic 8 Engine Management: The Saab Trionic 8 (T8)
system is a 32-bit torque-based engine control unit mounted directly to the
intake manifold. The system calculates requested torque from accelerator pedal
position and adjusts boost pressure, ignition timing, and fuel delivery to
achieve the target torque independent of ambient conditions. The
Ecu.incorporates a 1.5 MB flash memory and communicates with vehicle systems via
CAN bus. The integrated mounting location exposes the unit to significant heat
soak, which can affect internal solder joint integrity over extended service.
Balance Shaft System: Dual counter-rotating balance shafts are integrated into
the cylinder block and driven by a chain from the crankshaft. The shafts are
phased to cancel the second-order harmonic vibrations inherent to inline-four
engines, providing smoothness comparable to larger displacement V6 engines.
Length (front of accessory drive to rear of flywheel
housing): 620 mm (24.4 in).
Width (overall, across valve cover): 670 mm (26.4 in).
Height (from oil pan rail to top of intake manifold): 710 mm (28.0 in).
Dry Weight (complete engine with flywheel, turbocharger, and manifolds): 145 kg
(320 lb).
Dry Weight (complete engine with alternator, starter, and accessories): 158 kg
(348 lb).
Engine Oil: GM dexos2 5W-30 fully synthetic or
Saab-approved 5W-30 meeting ACEA A3/B4. Oil Change Interval: 15,000 km (9,300
mi) or 12 months under normal operation; 10,000 km (6,200 mi) for severe service
(frequent short trips, towing, high-load operation). Oil Filter Replacement:
Every oil change; use OEM or equivalent high-efficiency filter. Coolant
Capacity: 7.0-8.0 L (7.4-8.5 US qt). Coolant Change Interval: 60,000 km (37,000
mi) or 48 months.
