The Renault S8U is a 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated
diesel engine from the renowned 8140 family, a joint development between Sofim -
a consortium comprising Fiat, Saviem (later Renault), and Alfa Romeo. Introduced
in the early 1980s, this powerplant became the backbone of Renault’s commercial
vehicle lineup, powering the Master van, the Trafic, and various light trucks
for nearly two decades.
The S8U was engineered with an emphasis on extreme durability, heavy-duty
construction, and sustained low-end torque output, prioritizing commercial
reliability over high-speed performance. Its architecture is defined by a
massive cast-iron cylinder block with dry liners, an aluminum alloy cylinder
head with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) operating eight valves, and an
indirect injection (IDI) fuel system using a mechanical rotary pump. The
engine’s reputation for "tractor-like" reliability stems from its under-stressed
design, robust bottom end, and straightforward mechanical components.
While later iterations saw displacement increases from 2,445 cc to 2,499 cc and
the introduction of turbocharged variants (designated S8U-750), the naturally
aspirated S8U remained a staple for applications requiring unfailing service in
demanding conditions. Production continued through the 1990s before the engine
family was succeeded by the G-Type (G8T) and eventually the M9R common-rail
diesel engines.
The S8U is a longitudinal or transverse-mounted, inline four-cylinder diesel
engine utilizing a wet-sump lubrication system and indirect injection
technology. Its long-stroke architecture was optimized to produce peak torque at
low engine speeds, a critical characteristic for commercial vehicle applications
requiring pulling power from idle. The engine uses a mechanical fuel injection
system with no electronic control, relying on mechanical governors and
calibrated injection pumps.

The cylinder block is constructed from high-grade gray
cast iron with exceptional wall thickness and structural reinforcement designed
to withstand the high cylinder pressures of diesel combustion without
distortion. The block utilizes dry cylinder liners - precision-ground, press-fit
sleeves that are replaceable during overhaul. This liner design allows for
multiple rebuild cycles, a critical feature for commercial vehicle longevity.
The block features a deep-skirt configuration extending below the crankshaft
centerline, providing substantial rigidity and reducing vibration.
The crankshaft is forged from chrome-molybdenum steel, supported by five main
bearings with large journal diameters to accommodate sustained high-load
operation. Connecting rods are forged steel with a heavy cross-section, designed
for infinite fatigue life under rated load. The pistons are aluminum alloy with
a steel strut insert to control thermal expansion, featuring a deep combustion
bowl that forms the pre-combustion chamber interface. The oil pump is a
gear-type unit mounted externally on the front of the block, driven by the
timing belt and providing high flow volume essential for diesel engine cooling
and lubrication.
The cylinder head is a lightweight aluminum alloy
casting, a departure from the cast-iron construction of the block, selected to
reduce overall engine weight and improve thermal transfer. The head incorporates
the indirect injection system’s pre-combustion chambers, which are separate
spherical inserts made of heat-resistant steel. These pre-chambers receive the
injected fuel, initiating combustion before the flame front propagates into the
main cylinder, reducing combustion noise and limiting peak cylinder pressures.
The SOHC valvetrain operates eight valves through rocker arms with adjustable
screw-and-locknut tappets. The camshaft rides directly in machined bores within
the cylinder head without replaceable bearings. Valve clearances require
periodic manual adjustment, a maintenance characteristic of engines from this
era. The intake manifold is a cast-iron or aluminum log-style design, while the
exhaust manifold is a heavy cast-iron unit designed to withstand repeated
thermal cycling.
Valve Configuration: SOHC, 8 valves.
Intake Valve Diameter: 40.0 mm / 1.57 in.
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 34.0 mm / 1.34 in.
Pre-Combustion Chamber Volume: 6-8 cc per cylinder, accounting for the indirect
injection design. Camshaft Drive: Timing belt with manual tensioner;
interference engine design with clearance for valve-to-piston contact upon belt
failure. Valve Clearance (Cold): Intake: 0.20 mm / 0.008 in; Exhaust: 0.25 mm /
0.010 in.
The S8U employs an indirect injection fuel system
centered around a mechanical rotary injection pump, predominantly the Bosch VE
series or the Lucas CAV equivalent. The pump is driven by the timing belt and
incorporates a mechanical governor that regulates fuel delivery based on engine
speed and accelerator pedal position. Injection pressure is generated within the
pump and delivered via steel high-pressure lines to the injectors at pressures
up to approximately 350 bar / 5,075 psi.
The injectors are of the pencil-type design, with a single nozzle hole, and are
mounted into the cylinder head to spray fuel directly into the pre-combustion
chamber. A cold-start advance mechanism on the injection pump alters injection
timing to assist cold starting. The fuel system includes a fuel lift pump -
either a mechanical diaphragm pump mounted on the injection pump or an electric
in-tank pump - and a replaceable fuel filter with an integrated water separator.
Lubrication is provided by a high-capacity gear-type
oil pump mounted externally to the cylinder block at the front of the engine.
The pump is driven by the timing belt and draws oil from the sump through a
screened pickup tube. The system incorporates a full-flow spin-on oil filter
mounted on the side of the block. An oil cooler is not present on most naturally
aspirated S8U variants, as the engine’s thermal load is managed by the
large-capacity cooling system.
The lubrication circuit supplies pressurized oil to the crankshaft main
bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and the rocker arm
assembly. A bypass valve within the oil filter housing ensures continued oil
flow if the filter becomes restricted. The oil pan is a stamped steel unit with
a substantial capacity to maintain oil pressure during extended operation on
inclines.
The cooling system is a forced circulation, pressurized
design sized for the thermal demands of commercial vehicle operation, including
extended idling and high-load, low-speed conditions. A belt-driven centrifugal
water pump circulates coolant through the cast-iron block and aluminum cylinder
head. The system utilizes a high-capacity cross-flow radiator with a
copper-brass core and a mechanical fan driven by a viscous coupling (or
direct-mounted on earlier applications).
A wax-type thermostat, rated at approximately 88°C / 190°F, regulates coolant
flow to the radiator. The expansion tank is separate from the radiator on most
applications, allowing for coolant recovery and system degassing. The large
coolant capacity contributes to the engine’s ability to maintain stable
operating temperatures under sustained heavy loads.
Cold Start Aid: Later S8U variants incorporated a
"Thermostart" system, a flame-start device in the intake manifold that ignites a
small quantity of fuel to warm the intake air in extreme cold conditions,
reducing reliance on glow plugs.
Intake System: The intake system consists of a large-diameter air cleaner
housing with a replaceable paper element. No turbocharger or intercooler is
present on the naturally aspirated S8U, though the S8U-750 turbocharged variant
includes a turbocharger and, on some applications, an air-to-air intercooler.
Timing System: The camshaft and injection pump are driven by a reinforced rubber
timing belt with a manual tensioner. The belt replacement interval is critical,
as the engine is of interference design. The timing belt also drives the water
pump on many configurations.
Emissions Control: The S8U predates modern emissions regulations. Emissions
control is limited to a closed crankcase ventilation system (PCV) and, on later
variants, a simple oxidation catalyst. The mechanical injection system has no
electronic feedback or exhaust aftertreatment beyond these basic measures.
Electrical System: The engine is equipped with a 12-volt electrical system
featuring a high-output alternator designed for commercial vehicle duty cycles,
typically rated between 70 and 90 amperes. The starter motor is a high-torque
unit designed to overcome the compression resistance of the 22.0:1 ratio.
Overall Length: 28.7 in / 730 mm.
Overall Width: 23.6 in / 600 mm.
Overall Height: 30.7 in / 780 mm.
