The Opel A14NET is a 1.4-liter, turbocharged
inline-four gasoline engine belonging to the GM Family 0 EcoTec generation.
Introduced in 2009, this engine represented Opel’s shift toward
smaller-displacement forced induction powerplants, designed to deliver the
torque and power of a larger naturally aspirated engine while achieving improved
fuel economy and reduced emissions. The A14NET is the higher-output variant
within the 1.4-liter turbo family, distinguished from the mechanically identical
A14NEL by a different engine control unit calibration that yields increased
power and torque. In General Motors nomenclature, this engine is also designated
as LUJ.
The A14NET employs a cast iron cylinder block combined with an aluminum alloy
cylinder head, a dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) valvetrain with sixteen valves,
and dual independent variable valve timing. The turbocharger is integrated
directly into the exhaust manifold - a compact design that reduces weight and
improves thermal efficiency. A timing chain system eliminates the need for
periodic belt replacement.
The engine was engineered to meet Euro 5 and later Euro 6 emissions standards,
incorporating technologies such as an electronically controlled thermostat and a
water-cooled charge air cooler. Its compact dimensions and high specific output
made it suitable for a wide range of Opel vehicles, from superminis to mid-size
sedans and crossovers.
The A14NET is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged inline-four gasoline
engine configured for transverse mounting in front-wheel-drive vehicle
architectures. Its design emphasizes low-end torque delivery and thermal
efficiency.
Engine Type: Inline-4, 4-cycle, water-cooled, turbocharged.
Displacement: 1,364 cc (83.2 cu.in).
Bore and Stroke: 72.5 mm (2.85 in) x 82.6 mm (3.25 in).
Compression Ratio: 9.5:1.
Valvetrain: DOHC, 16-valve (4 valves per cylinder) with chain drive.
Aspiration: Single-scroll turbocharger, integrated exhaust manifold.
Fuel System: Multi-point fuel injection (MPI).
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Redline: 6,500 rpm.
Maximum Power: 103 kW (140 hp) at 4,900-6,000 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) at 1,850-4,900 rpm.
Overboost Torque: 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) under transient conditions (select
applications).
The cylinder block is manufactured from gray cast iron,
a material selected for its rigidity, wear resistance, and ability to withstand
the elevated cylinder pressures generated by turbocharged operation. The block
features a closed-deck design, where the cylinder bores are fully enclosed by
the water jacket structure at the top deck surface, providing maximum cylinder
head gasket clamping force and resistance to bore distortion. Cast-in-place
cylinder bores are machined directly into the iron casting, with a finished
surface honed to precise tolerances.
The block incorporates a deep-skirt design extending below the crankshaft
centerline, enhancing structural rigidity and providing robust support for the
main bearing caps. A structural aluminum ladder frame - a bedplate - is bolted
to the lower crankcase, incorporating the main bearing caps and adding
substantial rigidity to the bottom end. The block is configured for transverse
mounting with integrated engine mount brackets.
Block Material: Cast iron.
Bore Diameter: 72.5 mm (2.85 in).
Main Bearing Configuration: Five main bearings with integrated bedplate.
The cylinder head is constructed from aluminum alloy
and utilizes a DOHC valvetrain with four valves per cylinder - two intake and
two exhaust - actuated by roller finger followers. The camshafts are driven by a
silent-type roller chain from the crankshaft, with an automatic hydraulic
tensioner maintaining optimal chain tension. Hydraulic lash adjusters are
integrated into the valvetrain, automatically maintaining zero valve clearance
throughout the engine’s operational life, eliminating the need for periodic
manual valve adjustments.
A defining feature of the A14NET is the dual independent variable valve timing
system. Oil-pressure-actuated phasers are mounted on both the intake and exhaust
camshafts, allowing continuous adjustment of valve timing across a range of 30
degrees for the intake camshaft and 25 degrees for the exhaust camshaft. This
system optimizes valve overlap for low-end torque, high-rpm power, idle
stability, and fuel economy. The combustion chambers are of a pent-roof design
with centrally located spark plugs.
Head Material: Aluminum alloy
Valve Configuration: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder with roller finger followers
and hydraulic lash adjusters.
Valve Diameter (Intake): 30.0 mm (1.18 in).
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 26.0 mm (1.02 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 5.0 mm (0.20 in).
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees.
Variable Valve Timing Range (Intake): 0-30 degrees (crankshaft angle).
Variable Valve Timing Range (Exhaust): 0-25 degrees (crankshaft angle).
The A14NET employs a multi-point electronic fuel
injection (MPI) system with sequential injection. Four fuel injectors are
mounted in the intake manifold runners, positioned to spray fuel directly onto
the back of the intake valves. This port injection design provides excellent
air-fuel mixture preparation, immediate throttle response, and maintains intake
valve cleanliness, eliminating the carbon buildup concerns associated with
direct injection systems. The fuel system operates at conventional pressures,
reducing parasitic load on the engine.
A fuel pump assembly located within the fuel tank supplies pressurized fuel to a
stainless steel fuel rail that distributes fuel evenly to all four injectors.
The engine control unit (ECU) calculates injection pulse width based on input
from the mass airflow sensor, throttle position sensor, coolant temperature
sensor, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensors, and oxygen sensor
feedback to maintain optimal air-fuel ratios across all operating conditions. A
fuel pressure regulator maintains constant fuel pressure relative to intake
manifold vacuum.
Injection Type: Multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection.
Fuel Pressure: 380-420 kPa (55.1-60.9 psi).
Fuel Injector Resistance: 12.0-16.0 Ohms.
Fuel Requirement: 91 octane or higher (Research Octane Number 95 recommended).
Fuel Cutoff: 6,500 rpm.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design utilizing a gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft.
The oil pump draws lubricant from a cast aluminum oil pan through a mesh
strainer and circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter before
entering the main oil gallery. From the gallery, pressurized oil is distributed
to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings,
roller finger followers, hydraulic lash adjusters, variable valve timing
phasers, timing chain tensioner, and turbocharger bearing housing.
A pressure relief valve integrated into the oil pump maintains system pressure
within operational limits. The oil pan incorporates a windage tray to reduce oil
aeration at high engine speeds. A water-cooled oil cooler is integrated into the
oil filter housing to stabilize oil temperature under sustained high-load
operation. The lubrication system is designed to meet the specific requirements
of turbocharged engines, including adequate oil supply to the turbocharger under
all operating conditions.
Oil Type: SAE 5W-30 fully synthetic (dexos2 or dexos1 Gen 2/3 specification).
Oil Capacity (with filter): 4.0 liters (4.2 US qt).
Oil Pressure (at idle): 150-250 kPa (21.8-36.3 psi).
Oil Pressure (at 3,000 rpm): 350-450 kPa (50.8-65.3 psi).
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, crankshaft-driven.
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled
design engineered to manage the thermal load of a turbocharged engine with an
integrated exhaust manifold. A high-efficiency cross-flow aluminum radiator with
an electric cooling fan provides cooling capacity. A centrifugal-type water
pump, driven by the timing chain, circulates coolant through the cylinder block,
cylinder head, turbocharger bearing housing, and oil cooler.
A wax-pellet electronically controlled thermostat regulates coolant flow,
allowing the engine control unit to actively manage engine temperature for
improved efficiency and reduced emissions. The thermostat includes a heating
element that allows the ECU to open it earlier under certain conditions. A
separate charge air cooling system uses a water-to-air intercooler integrated
into the intake manifold, with its own coolant circuit circulating through a
low-temperature radiator mounted at the front of the vehicle. The cooling system
incorporates a coolant recovery tank to maintain system pressure.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors (GM
Dex-Cool or equivalent). Coolant Capacity: 6.5-7.0 liters (6.9-7.4 US qt) for
engine circuit; additional capacity for charge air cooler circuit.
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 90-95 °C (194-203 °F).
Radiator Cap Pressure: 108-127 kPa (15.7-18.4 psi).
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, timing chain-driven.
Charge Air Cooler Type: Water-to-air, integrated intake manifold.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: Air is drawn through a dry-type paper
element air filter and a hot-wire mass airflow sensor before entering the
turbocharger compressor. Compressed air passes through a water-to-air charge air
cooler integrated into the intake manifold before entering the cylinders. The
electronically controlled throttle body - drive-by-wire - eliminates the
mechanical cable connection.
Exhaust System: Integrated exhaust manifold turbocharger casting. A heated
oxygen sensor is mounted upstream of the catalytic converter for fuel trim
feedback, with a second sensor downstream monitoring catalyst efficiency.
Distributorless ignition system with four individual
pencil-type ignition coils, each mounted directly over a spark plug
(coil-on-plug). The ECU controls ignition timing based on crankshaft position,
camshaft position, knock sensor feedback, and engine load. A knock sensor
mounted on the cylinder block allows the ECU to retard ignition timing under
detonation conditions, a critical feature for turbocharged engines operating on
varying fuel qualities.
Single-scroll turbocharger with an integrated exhaust
manifold casting that combines the manifold and turbine housing into a single
component. This design reduces weight, improves thermal efficiency, and allows
faster catalyst light-off. The turbocharger is both water-cooled and oil-cooled,
with coolant circulating through the bearing housing after engine shutdown via
thermosiphon effect to prevent coking. An electronically controlled wastegate
actuator provides precise boost control.
