The Honda L15BA is a 1.5-liter, turbocharged,
inline-four engine belonging to Honda’s Earth Dreams technology family.
Introduced with the 11th-generation Honda Civic for the 2022 model year, it
represents a significant refinement over its predecessor, the L15B7. While
retaining the fundamental architecture of a 1,498 cc displacement and a
single-scroll turbocharger, the L15BA distinguishes itself through a
comprehensively redesigned cylinder head.
For the first time in a 1.5-liter Honda engine, this unit incorporates Variable
Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) on the exhaust side, a feature
previously reserved for the intake valves or omitted in favor of Variable Timing
Control (VTC) alone. This change, combined with a new 4-into-2 exhaust port
configuration integrated into the cylinder head, yields a broader torque curve,
improved throttle response, and a slight increase in peak power output.
The engine is a Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) design utilizing direct fuel
injection and is engineered to balance performance with efficiency, becoming the
standard powerplant for higher trim levels of the 11th-generation Civic.
The L15BA is a transverse-mounted, inline four-cylinder engine with a
closed-deck design for enhanced structural rigidity under boost. Its
displacement is achieved through an undersquare architecture, featuring a bore
and stroke optimized for low-end torque production and thermal efficiency.

The cylinder block is constructed from high-pressure
die-cast aluminum alloy to minimize weight while maintaining strength. The
closed-deck design, where the cylinder bores are fully supported by the block
material at the top, provides superior resistance to the high cylinder pressures
generated by the turbocharging system. This construction helps maintain bore
roundness under heavy load, contributing to improved piston ring sealing and
reduced blow-by.
The cylinder bores themselves are cast with a plateau-honed finish, eliminating
the need for separate cast-iron liners in the base design. Within the block, a
high-rigidity forged steel crankshaft with eight counterweights is utilized to
manage the forces of the 1.5-liter displacement and boost pressure. The
crankshaft is supported by five main bearings.
Connecting rods are forged powder metal for high tensile strength, while the
pistons are lightweight, high-strength aluminum alloy castings designed to
withstand elevated combustion temperatures. The oil pump is a
variable-displacement type mounted within the block, reducing parasitic losses
by supplying only the necessary oil pressure based on engine load and speed.
The cylinder head represents the most significant
engineering evolution in the L15BA compared to prior L-series engines. It is a
cross-flow, aluminum alloy casting that integrates the exhaust manifold - a
design strategy that reduces weight and allows for faster catalyst light-off
during cold starts. The key innovation lies in the valvetrain. The L15BA employs
VTEC on the exhaust valves, a first for a production 1.5-liter Honda engine.
This system uses two distinct cam profiles for the exhaust valves: a low-lift
profile for improved swirl and exhaust gas recirculation stability at low engine
speeds, and a high-lift, longer-duration profile that activates at higher rpm.
The high-lift profile optimizes the scavenging of exhaust gases, reducing
backpressure and improving the efficiency of the turbocharger’s turbine wheel.
The intake side utilizes Dual VTC, allowing for independent camshaft phasing to
optimize intake valve timing across the rev range. The valve seats are
constructed from a wear-resistant sintered alloy.
Valve Configuration: DOHC, 16 valves.
Intake Valve Diameter: 29.0 mm / 1.14 in.
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 26.0 mm / 1.02 in.
Spark Plugs: NGK DILKAR7G11GS (Iridium), gap pre-set to 1.1 mm / 0.043 in.
Exhaust Valves: Sodium-filled for enhanced heat dissipation, allowing the valve
head to withstand higher exhaust gas temperatures without failure.
VTEC Engagement (Exhaust): 5,500 rpm, dependent on throttle position and engine
load.
The L15BA utilizes a high-pressure direct injection
system. The fuel system operates at pressures up to approximately 3,600 psi / 25
MPa. A cam-driven high-pressure fuel pump, located on the cylinder head,
pressurizes fuel and delivers it to a set of six-hole injectors that spray
directly into the combustion chamber.
This system allows for precise fuel metering, improved atomization, and charge
cooling within the cylinder, which helps suppress knock and enables a higher
compression ratio for a turbocharged engine. The system uses a returnless fuel
delivery from the tank to reduce fuel heating.
Lubrication is provided by a variable-displacement,
twin-stage oil pump mounted within the oil pan and driven by the crankshaft.
This pump adjusts its output based on engine operating conditions. Under
low-load conditions, the pump operates in a low-flow mode to reduce friction and
improve fuel efficiency. Under high-load or high-rpm operation, the pump
switches to a high-flow mode to ensure adequate lubrication for the turbocharger
and the VTEC mechanism.
The system includes a full-flow oil filter and a water-cooled oil cooler
integrated into the oil filter housing to maintain oil temperature stability.
The specified oil is 0W-20 fully synthetic, chosen for its low viscosity to
reduce internal friction during cold starts and its high-temperature stability
for turbocharger protection.
The cooling system is designed for the high thermal
demands of a turbocharged direct-injection engine. A high-efficiency,
belt-driven water pump circulates coolant through a revised water jacket within
the cylinder block and cylinder head. The water jacket configuration has been
optimized to provide more uniform cooling around the cylinder bores,
particularly between cylinders two and three, which experience the highest
thermal stress.
The system incorporates a radiator with a cooling fan assembly and an expansion
tank. An air-to-air intercooler is mounted in the front of the vehicle to reduce
the temperature of the compressed intake air, increasing density and resistance
to detonation.
Ignition System: The ignition system is a fully
transistorized, computer-controlled system with individual ignition coils
mounted directly over each spark plug. The ECU manages ignition timing based on
multiple sensor inputs, including knock sensor feedback, to optimize power
output and prevent detonation.
Intake System: The intake system features a large-volume air cleaner and a
resonator to dampen induction noise. The air path to the turbocharger is
designed to be as direct and unobstructed as possible to minimize flow
restrictions and improve throttle response. Charge air is routed through the
intercooler before entering the electronic throttle body.
Timing System: A low-friction, silent-type timing chain drives the dual overhead
camshafts. The chain tensioner is hydraulically actuated by engine oil pressure.
This system is designed for the operational life of the engine without requiring
routine replacement under normal driving conditions.
Emissions Control: The engine employs a close-coupled three-way catalytic
converter integrated into the cylinder head exhaust manifold, enabling rapid
activation to reduce cold-start hydrocarbon emissions. The system includes
multiple oxygen sensors for precise air-fuel ratio feedback control. Positive
Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) and Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) systems are
also incorporated.
