The Ford CSDA is a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated
inline-four gasoline engine, a member of the Duratec HE family. Developed
through the collaboration between Ford and Mazda, it is fundamentally derived
from the Mazda L-engine platform.
This power unit was engineered to deliver a
balance of refined performance, fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions,
becoming a prominent option in the European Ford Focus Mk2 during its
early production phase from 2004 to 2006. The engine features a
lightweight all-alloy construction and a sophisticated valvetrain,
setting a standard for durability and smooth operation in the compact
car segment.
The CSDA engine is defined by its precise engineering parameters. It is
a four-stroke, spark-ignition engine with four cylinders arranged in a
straight line, mounted transversely in its primary vehicle applications.
The engine operates on a naturally aspirated principle, relying on
atmospheric pressure for air intake without forced induction.
Engine Type: Inline 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated, gasoline.
Valvetrain: DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft), 16 valves total,
chain-driven.
Displacement: 1.8 L; 1798 cc (109.7 cu.in).
Bore: 83.0 mm (3.27 in).
Stroke: 83.1 mm (3.27 in).
Compression Ratio: 10.8:1.
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Fuel System: Sequential multi-point electronic fuel injection (SEFI).
Maximum Power: 88 kW at 6000 rpm; 120 hp at 6000 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 165 Nm at 4000 rpm; 122 lb-ft at 4000 rpm.
Idle Speed: 700 ± 50 rpm.
Emissions Standard: Euro 4 compliant.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast aluminum
alloy, a design choice that significantly reduces overall engine mass and
enhances thermal conductivity. This open-deck block design features cast-in iron
liners to provide a durable wear surface for the piston rings.
The block is a deep-skirt design, contributing to structural rigidity and
reduced noise, vibration, and harshness. Five main bearings support the forged
steel crankshaft, which is fully balanced. The bearing caps are integrated into
a single, robust ladder frame that bolts to the block, reinforcing the lower end
to manage the engine’s operational stresses.
0The cylinder head is also manufactured from cast
aluminum alloy, housing the double overhead camshafts. The DOHC arrangement
allows for a four-valve-per-cylinder configuration, optimizing volumetric
efficiency across the rev range. The valves are arranged in a pent-roof
combustion chamber design.
Valve Arrangement: 4 valves per cylinder (2 intake, 2 exhaust).
Valve Head Diameter (Intake): 33.1 mm (1.30 in).
Valve Head Diameter (Exhaust): 28.6 mm (1.13 in).
Valve Stem Diameter (Intake): 5.5 mm (0.22 in).
Valve Stem Diameter (Exhaust): 5.5 mm (0.22 in).
Camshaft Drive: Silent-type timing chain.
Valve Lifters: Hydraulic lash adjusters integrated with roller finger followers,
eliminating the need for periodic valve clearance adjustments.
The fuel system is a sequential electronic fuel
injection (SEFI) design. An electric fuel pump, located within the fuel tank,
delivers fuel to the engine at a controlled pressure. The fuel rail, mounted to
the intake manifold, supplies each of the four fuel injectors. The engine
control unit (ECU) commands each injector to open individually, synchronizing
fuel delivery with the intake stroke of its corresponding cylinder.
This sequential operation optimizes fuel atomization, improves throttle
response, and reduces exhaust emissions. The intake manifold is constructed from
a composite plastic material, which is lightweight and helps to reduce intake
air temperature.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump
design. A gear-type oil pump, driven directly by the crankshaft, circulates
engine oil throughout the system. Oil is drawn from the aluminum oil pan through
a strainer-type pickup tube before being pressurized.
The system incorporates a full-flow oil filter to remove contaminants. Oil is
directed through main oil galleries to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting
rod bearings, camshaft journals, and the hydraulic lash adjusters. The system is
designed to maintain stable oil pressure under all operating conditions.
Oil Capacity (with filter): 4.3 L (4.5 qt).
Oil Capacity (without filter): 3.9 L (4.1 qt).
Oil Grade: SAE 5W-30 meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C913-B or WSS-M2C913-C.
The cooling system is a sealed, pressurized system
using a cross-flow radiator. Coolant circulation is driven by a belt-driven
water pump mounted to the cylinder block. A wax-pellet type thermostat regulates
the coolant temperature by controlling the flow between the engine and radiator.
The system includes a plastic expansion tank with a pressure-rated cap to manage
system pressure and allow for coolant expansion. A dual-speed electric cooling
fan, mounted to the radiator, provides forced airflow during low-speed operation
or stationary idle to maintain optimal engine temperature.
Coolant Capacity (total system): 6.5 L (6.9 qt).
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 88 °C (190 °F).
System Pressure Cap Rating: 140 kPa (1.4 bar; 20 psi).
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: Features an acoustic resonance intake
system designed to optimize airflow and torque characteristics across the engine
speed range.
Exhaust System: Integrated with a heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) upstream and a
catalyst monitor sensor downstream to provide feedback for closed-loop fuel
control and emissions monitoring.
| Ignition and Electrical System |
Ignition System: The engine employs a distributorless
ignition system with a coil-on-plug (COP) configuration. Each cylinder has its
own individual ignition coil mounted directly over the spark plug, eliminating
high-tension spark plug wires. The ECU controls ignition timing based on engine
speed, load, and coolant temperature.
Electrical System: 12-volt with a liquid-cooled
alternator rated at 120 amperes.Spark Plug Type: Iridium-tipped,
long-life plug. Spark Plug Gap: 1.3 mm (0.05 in).000000000000000000000
Overall Length: 600 mm (23.6 in)
Overall Width: 650 mm (25.6 in)
Overall Height: 650 mm (25.6 in)
Dry Weight (without fluids): 115 kg (254 lb)
Valve Clearance: Hydraulic lash adjusters; no
adjustment required. Timing Chain Inspection: Visual inspection recommended at
160,000 km (100,000 mi) intervals for wear or slack. Engine Oil and Filter:
Replacement interval of 12 months or 15,000 km (9,300 mi) under normal
