The Ford A9JB is a 1.3-liter inline 4-cylinder petrol
engine produced from 2001 to 2008. It belongs to the Duratec 8V family, also
designated Rocam, and was engineered for the fifth-generation Ford Fiesta Mk5
(JH/JD). This powerplant combines a cast-iron cylinder block with an aluminum
cylinder head, delivering reliable everyday performance.
The engine utilizes a Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) with 8 valves actuated by
a timing chain, eliminating the need for a belt replacement interval. Designed
for efficiency and durability, the A9JB provides smooth power delivery suited
for urban and extra-urban driving environments.

The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron. The
block features an inline configuration with four cylinders. The cylinder bore
diameter measures 74.0 mm (2.91 in). The stroke length is 75.5 mm (2.97 in). The
crankshaft is supported by five main bearings.
The block height from the crankshaft centerline to the deck surface is 215.0 mm
(8.46 in). The piston displacement per cylinder is 324.75 cc (19.8 cu.in). The
piston pin diameter is 19.0 mm (0.75 in). The piston rings comprise two
compression rings and one oil control ring, with the top compression ring width
measuring 1.2 mm (0.047 in).
The cylinder head is manufactured from aluminum alloy.
It utilizes a Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) design with the camshaft supported
by four bearing journals. The valvetrain comprises 8 valves, with 2 valves per
cylinder. Valve actuation occurs via the camshaft acting upon hydraulic lifters,
which eliminate manual clearance adjustments. The intake valve has a head
diameter of 32.0 mm (1.26 in) with a stem diameter of 7.0 mm (0.28 in) and a
length of 104.4 mm (4.11 in).
The exhaust valve has a head diameter of 29.0 mm (1.14 in) with a stem diameter
of 7.0 mm (0.28 in) and a length of 104.4 mm (4.11 in). Both valves feature a
seat angle of 45 degrees. The timing drive is a chain with a pitch of 9.525 mm
(0.375 in), consisting of 96 links. The cylinder head gasket has a fire ring
diameter of 77.5 mm (3.05 in).
The fuel system employs multi-port manifold injection
(MPI) with sequential injection logic. The fuel pressure regulator maintains
system pressure at 3.5 bar (50.8 psi) above manifold pressure. The fuel
injectors have a flow rate of 155 cc per minute (14.8 lb per hour) at 3.0 bar
(43.5 psi).
The engine management system is a Siemens/Continental SIM210 ECU. The throttle
body features a bore diameter of 48.0 mm (1.89 in). The fuel tank capacity in
applications with this engine ranges from 42.0 to 45.0 liters (11.1 to 11.9 US
gal).
The lubrication system operates as a forced-feed wet
sump design. The oil pump is a rotor-type unit driven directly by the
crankshaft. The total engine oil capacity including the filter is 4.15-4.35
liters (4.4-4.6 US qt). The oil pressure at 2,000 rpm is 2.0-3.0 bar (29.0-43.5
psi).
The oil drain plug thread measures M14 x 1.5 mm (0.55 in x 0.06 in). The oil
filter is a spin-on type with a bypass valve opening pressure of 1.0 bar (14.5
psi). The oil pump relief valve opening pressure is 4.0-4.5 bar (58.0-65.3 psi).
The cooling system is a liquid-cooled, pressurized
circuit with a sealed expansion tank. The water pump is a centrifugal-type unit
driven by the accessory drive belt. The thermostat is a wax-pellet type with an
opening temperature of 88°C (190°F) and a fully open temperature of 102°C
(216°F).
The radiator core dimensions measure 480.0 mm x 350.0 mm x 26.0 mm (18.9 in x
13.8 in x 1.0 in). The cooling system total capacity is 5.0 liters (5.3 US qt).
The radiator cap pressure rating is 1.2 bar (17.4 psi). The electric cooling fan
activates at a coolant temperature of 96°C (205°F) and deactivates at 91°C
(196°F).
The exhaust system incorporates a three-way catalytic
converter with a ceramic monolith substrate of 600 cells per square inch. The
system utilizes one heated oxygen sensor positioned before the catalytic
converter and one after for closed-loop fuel control. The ignition system is a
distributorless coil-on-plug design, with each cylinder served by an individual
ignition coil.
The spark plug gap is set at 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in). The engine is equipped
with a knock sensor mounted on the cylinder block, allowing the ECU to adjust
ignition timing in response to fuel quality. The starter motor is a pre-engaged
type with an output of 1.1 kW. The alternator produces 90 A at 14 V.
The engine length measured from the accessory drive
belt plane to the flywheel mounting face is 495.0 mm (19.5 in). The engine width
across the exhaust manifold and intake manifold is 535.0 mm (21.1 in). The
engine height from the oil pan rail to the highest point of the intake manifold
is 620.0 mm (24.4 in). The dry weight of the engine with all accessories,
excluding coolant and oil, is 98.0 kg (216 lb).
Oil change intervals are specified at 15,000 km (9,300
mi) or 12 months. The timing chain does not require scheduled replacement;
inspection for elongation beyond 0.5% and tensioner function is recommended at
200,000 km (124,000 mi). Spark plug replacement occurs every 60,000 km (37,000
mi).
