The cylinder block is constructed from high-grade cast iron with
cast-in-place, replaceable wet-type cylinder liners. This design
enhances cylinder durability under the high mean effective pressures up
to 2.21 MPa (320 psi) generated at peak power output.
The wet cylinder liners improve heat transfer from the combustion zone
to the cooling water, reducing thermal stress on the block structure.
The 6-cylinder inline configuration provides inherent primary and
secondary balance, contributing to smooth operation across the rated
speed range.
The block incorporates seven main bearing webs with two-bolt main
bearing caps. The crankshaft is supported by seven main bearings and is
constructed from forged steel to withstand the high torque output (5,500
Nm or 4,060 lb-ft) produced at rated power.
A fabricated steel oil pan with a deep sump is sealed to the lower
crankcase, providing a large oil reservoir suited to extended commercial
operation between services. The block design incorporates extensive
ribbing around the main bearing area and cylinder head mounting surface.
Block Material: Cast iron
Bore Diameter (finished): 170 mm (6.7 in)
Cylinder Liner Type: Wet-type, replaceable
Main Bearing Caps: Cast iron, two-bolt design
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast iron as a single unit
covering all 6 cylinders (monobloc design). This design was selected for
maximum rigidity and uniform clamping force distribution across the
cylinder head gasket under the high cylinder pressures of direct
injection diesel combustion. The cross-flow port design positions the
intake manifold on one side and the exhaust manifold on the opposite
side, optimizing volumetric efficiency and reducing thermal loading on
the cylinder head gasket.
The valvetrain is of overhead valve (OHV) design. The camshaft is
located in the cylinder block and is driven by gears from the crankshaft
timing gear. Valves are actuated by pushrods and rocker arms. Valve
clearance is adjusted manually via threaded adjusters on the rocker
arms. The cylinder head incorporates seats and guides for 4 valves per
cylinder (2 intake, 2 exhaust) - totaling 24 valves - a configuration
that improves volumetric efficiency and reduces pumping losses. The
combustion chambers are of a toroidal bowl-in-piston design, promoting
efficient air-fuel mixing. The engine is of interference design; precise
valve timing is required to prevent piston-to-valve contact.
Head Material: Cast iron (monobloc)
Valve Configuration: OHV, 4 valves per cylinder with pushrods and rocker
arms
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees
Interference Design: Yes
The 6EY17W employs a direct injection system using a Bosch-type
mechanical in-line injection pump. Individual plunger-and-barrel
assemblies serve each cylinder, delivering fuel at high pressure through
dedicated injection lines to multi-hole injector nozzles mounted
centrally in the cylinder head. The injection pump is mechanically
governed with an integrated isochronous or droop governor, maintaining
stable engine speed under varying load conditions.
A fuel feed pump delivers fuel from the service tank to the injection
pump through primary and secondary filters. Fuel injection timing is
adjustable via shim adjustment on the pump plunger or rotating the pump
relative to the camshaft. The direct injection system offers robustness,
serviceability, and reduced specific fuel consumption compared to
indirect injection designs.
Injection Type: Direct injection.
Injection Pump: Bosch-type mechanical in-line pump.
Governor: Mechanical, isochronous or droop type.
Fuel Requirement: Marine diesel oil (MDO) or heavy fuel oil (HFO)
depending on specification, viscosity up to 380 cSt at 50°C.
Fuel Injection Pressure: 30-35 MPa (4,350-5,075 psi) at nozzle opening.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump design utilizing
a gear-type oil pump driven from the camshaft or crankshaft gear train.
The oil pump draws lubricant from the fabricated steel oil pan through a
suction strainer and circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil
filter and an integrated oil cooler before entering the main oil
gallery.
An oil centrifuge bypass filter is incorporated on commercial variants
to extend oil change intervals. Piston cooling oil jets are directed at
the underside of each piston crown to manage thermal loads at the high
mean effective pressures. A pressure relief valve maintains system
pressure within operational limits.
Oil Type: SAE 30 or 40 (API CF, CF-4, CG-4; or ACEA E2, E3)
Oil Capacity (sump): 110-130 liters (29-34 US gal) depending on sump
configuration
Oil Pressure (at rated speed): 294-490 kPa (42.6-71.1 psi)
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type
Oil Filtration: Full-flow filter plus optional bypass centrifuge filter
The 6EY17W utilizes a freshwater (closed-loop) cooling system with a
plate-type or shell-and-tube heat exchanger. This design isolates the
engine block and cylinder head from raw seawater, preventing internal
saltwater corrosion. A centrifugal-type water pump (freshwater pump)
circulates coolant through the engine block, cylinder head,
turbocharger, and charge air cooler before passing through the heat
exchanger.
A second raw water pump (rubber impeller type or centrifugal) draws
seawater and circulates it through the heat exchanger to absorb heat
from the freshwater circuit before discharging overboard. A wax-pellet
thermostat regulates freshwater flow to maintain optimal operating
temperature. A pressurized expansion tank allows for coolant expansion
and air separation.
Coolant Type: Freshwater with inhibited ethylene glycol antifreeze
Coolant Capacity (engine side): 50-60 liters (13-16 US gal)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 70-80 °C (158-176 °F)
Thermostat Full-Open Temperature: 90 °C (194 °F)
Heat Exchanger: Plate-type or shell-and-tube
Raw Water Pump Type: Rubber impeller or centrifugal
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: Cast iron intake manifold with integrated charge air
cooler connections. The air intake system incorporates a dry-type air
filter or an oil-bath air cleaner for dusty environments. A throttle
valve is not present; engine speed and load are controlled directly by
fuel quantity.
Exhaust System: Cast iron exhaust manifold with integrated turbocharger
mounting flange. The exhaust system is lagged with thermal insulation to
reduce compartment heat load. A flexible bellows section absorbs thermal
expansion.
Turbocharger System: The engine is equipped with a single or twin
turbocharger(s) depending on the power rating, utilizing an air-to-water
intercooler (charge air cooler) for all variants. The intercooler
reduces intake air temperature to approximately 50-60 °C (122-140 °F),
increasing air density and reducing thermal load. Maximum boost pressure
ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 bar (21.8-36.3 psi) depending on variant.
Timing Drive: Gear-driven system with camshaft and injection pump driven
from the crankshaft through a train of induction-hardened spur gears.
The gear train is enclosed within a cast iron timing gear housing at the
free end of the engine.
