The Yanmar 4JH4-TE is a 4-cylinder,
turbocharged marine diesel engine from the JH series, designed for
larger cruising sailboats and light displacement motor vessels. This
engine utilizes a direct injection combustion system with a Bosch
distributor-type VE pump, moving away from the indirect injection
designs of earlier JH series engines. The TE suffix indicates a
turbocharged configuration with a fresh water cooling system employing a
heat exchanger, which isolates the engine block from corrosive seawater.
The engine delivers a maximum output of 75 hp (55.2 kW) at 3200 rpm,
providing a high power-to-weight ratio in a compact package. The Yanmar
4JH4-TE complies with EPA Tier 2 and RCD 1 emission standards,
reflecting its design for modern environmental regulations. It is
commonly paired with Kanzaki KM4A2, KMH4A, or ZF sail drives and
gearboxes, and is available in shaft drive or saildrive (SD60)
configurations.
The Yanmar 4JH4-TE is a vertical, 4-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged,
inline 4-cylinder diesel engine. The direct injection combustion system
contributes to improved fuel efficiency and reduced exhaust emissions
compared to pre-combustion chamber designs.
Engine Type: Vertical, inline 4-cylinder, 4-stroke, water-cooled diesel
engine.

pump.

Maximum Output (Crankshaft): 55.2 kW (75.1 hp) at 3200 rpm.
Continuous Output (Crankshaft): 50.2 kW (68.3 hp) at 3100 rpm.

Cruising RPM Range: 2400-2800 rpm.
Firing Order: 1-3-4-2.
Compression Ratio: 18.0:1.
Idling Speed: 700-800 rpm (in neutral).
Rotation (Crankshaft): Counter-clockwise viewed from the flywheel
(stern).
Rotation (Propeller Shaft - Ahead): Bi-rotation (clockwise or
counter-clockwise from stern) depending on gearbox selection.
The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron, providing a rigid
foundation for the crankshaft and cylinder bores. The block is a single
casting incorporating the four cylinders and the crankcase. The block
features a deep-skirt design that extends below the crankshaft
centerline, increasing structural rigidity and reducing noise,
vibration, and harshness (NVH). Replaceable dry-type cylinder liners are
pressed into the parent block material.
The liners are made of centrifugally cast alloy iron with a hardened
internal bore surface. The block includes mounting faces for the gear
housing at the front, the flywheel housing at the rear, and the engine
mounting feet on each side. A pressed steel or cast aluminum oil sump is
bolted to the lower flange.
The cylinder head is a single-piece, cast-iron cross-flow unit covering
all four cylinders. The overhead valve (OHV) configuration places the
camshaft within the cylinder block. Pushrods and rocker arms actuate the
valves. Two valves per cylinder (one intake, one exhaust) produce a
total of eight valves. The direct injection system requires a piston
with a re-entrant combustion bowl, and the cylinder head is designed to
accommodate centrally located injectors.
The valvetrain uses mechanical lash adjusters (screw and locknut type),
requiring periodic manual valve clearance inspection. Valve Clearance
(cold engine): Intake: 0.2 mm (0.008 in). Exhaust: 0.2 mm (0.008 in).
The cylinder head gasket is a multi-layer steel (MLS) construction for
improved sealing under turbocharged pressures.
The fuel system is a mechanical direct injection design utilizing a
Bosch distributor-type VE injection pump. The pump is mounted to the
side of the cylinder block and driven by the engine gear train. A
gear-type feed pump draws fuel from the tank through a primary fuel
filter with a water separator.
A mechanical centrifugal governor integrated into the injection pump
housing regulates engine speed by controlling the fuel rack position. An
electric stop solenoid provides remote shutdown capability.
High-pressure steel injection lines route fuel to four mechanical
injectors, one per cylinder. The injector opening pressure is 21.6 MPa
(3130 psi).
Fuel Injection Timing: 2.55° ± 1° BTDC (plunger lift 1.00 mm).
Fuel Injection Opening Pressure: 21.6 MPa ± 0.5 MPa (3130 psi ± 73 psi).
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, forced-feed circuit using
a rotor-type (trochoid) oil pump. The pump is driven from the front of
the crankshaft and draws oil through a strainer from the oil sump. Oil
passes through a full-flow spin-on canister filter mounted on the side
of the block. A water-cooled oil cooler, integrated into the system,
maintains oil temperature under high load conditions. A pressure
regulating valve maintains system pressure.
Total Oil Capacity (with filter): 7.0 L (7.4 qt).
Oil Pan Only Capacity: 5.7 L (6.0 qt) for 7° installation angle.
Effective Oil Capacity (between dipstick marks): 2.4 L (2.5 qt).
Oil Grade: SAE 15W-40 or SAE 30, meeting API CD or higher specification.
The 4JH4-TE employs an indirect fresh water cooling system with a heat
exchanger. A belt-driven centrifugal fresh water pump circulates coolant
through the cylinder block, cylinder head, and a plate-type heat
exchanger. Within the heat exchanger, raw seawater pumped by a separate
flexible-impeller pump (mounted on the front of the engine) absorbs heat
from the freshwater circuit before exiting through the exhaust mixing
elbow. A thermostatically controlled bypass circuit permits coolant
circulation within the engine during warm-up. An expansion tank with
pressure cap is integrated into the fresh water circuit and is mounted
on the engine.
Freshwater Coolant Capacity: 7.2 L (7.6 qt) including engine and heat
exchanger.
Expansion Tank Capacity: 0.8 L (0.8 qt).
Thermostat Start Opening Temperature: 71°C (160°F).
Thermostat Fully Open Temperature: 85°C (185°F).
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground. A gear-reduction starter
motor rated at 1.4 kW is standard. A 12V - 80A alternator (Hitachi) is
standard equipment; a 12V - 125A or 12V - 130A secondary alternator is
available as an option. An optional 24V - 75A alternator is also
offered.
Control System: A mechanical cable-actuated remote control system
operates the fuel injection pump throttle and the marine gear or sail
drive clutch (forward/neutral/reverse).
Air Intake System: A dry-type paper air cleaner element is mounted on
the intake manifold. The turbocharger compressor draws air through the
filter before delivering pressurized air to the engine.
Turbocharger: The engine is equipped with a fixed geometry or wastegate
turbocharger to provide boost pressure across the engine speed range.
Exhaust System: A water-cooled mixing elbow (L-type or high-riser
optional) is mounted on the turbocharger outlet. Seawater from the heat
exchanger is injected into the elbow to cool exhaust gases before they
pass through a flexible hose to the overboard outlet.
Flywheel Housing: Different housings are available for various marine
gear and saildrive configurations, including KM4A2, KMH4A, ZF25A, ZF30M,
and SD50-4T/SD60 saildrive units.
