The Volvo Penta D6-440 is a 5.5-liter,
inline-six turbocharged diesel engine representing the pinnacle of
medium-displacement marine propulsion. Introduced as the high-output
variant within the latest generation D6 family, this engine integrates
common-rail fuel injection, double overhead camshafts (DOHC), and a
combined turbocharger and supercharger air management system. The D6-440
delivers 440 horsepower, targeting high-performance leisure craft, sport
cruisers, and demanding commercial vessels requiring rapid planing
ability and sustained cruising speeds.
The D6-440 is distinguished by its unique two-stage air charging system
- a mechanical Roots-type supercharger provides immediate boost at low
engine speeds for exceptional "hole-shot" acceleration, while a
fixed-geometry turbocharger takes over at higher rpms to maintain
efficient power delivery. The engine features a common-rail fuel system
with piezoelectric injectors, enabling multiple injection events per
combustion cycle for reduced noise and improved fuel economy.
An all-cast iron block and cylinder head, combined with a ladder frame
bottom end, provide the structural rigidity required for sustained
high-load marine operation. The engine can be configured with Volvo
Penta’s DPI Aquamatic sterndrive, inboard shaft, or IPS pod drive
systems.
The D6-440 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged and supercharged
inline-six diesel engine configured for longitudinal mounting. Its
displacement and boost system are optimized for planing hull
applications.

aftercooler

Crankshaft Power: 324 kW (440 hp) at 3,300 rpm
Maximum Torque: 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) at 2,500-2,800 rpm
The cylinder block is manufactured from high-strength gray cast iron
using a deep-skirt design that extends below the crankshaft centerline,
providing exceptional structural rigidity under the high cylinder
pressures of common-rail diesel operation. The block features a
closed-deck configuration, ensuring the cylinder bores are fully
supported by the water jacket structure at the top deck surface for
superior head gasket sealing. Cast-in-place cylinder bores are machined
directly into the iron casting with a plateau-honed finish.
A structural aluminum or cast iron ladder frame is bolted to the lower
crankcase, incorporating the main bearing caps and adding substantial
rigidity to the bottom end. This bedplate design reduces noise and
vibration while supporting the high combustion forces generated by the
fuel system. The block incorporates seven main bearing webs with
four-bolt main bearing caps on the center journals. A
corrosion-protected cast aluminum oil pan is sealed to the lower
crankcase.
Block Material: Cast iron
Bore Diameter: 103.0 mm (4.06 in)
Main Bearing Configuration: 7 main bearings, 4-bolt caps on center
journals
Cylinder Head and Valves
The cylinder head is constructed from cast iron, matching the thermal
expansion characteristics of the block to ensure reliable head gasket
sealing across the wide temperature range of marine diesel operation.
The head utilizes a cross-flow design with the intake manifold on one
side and the exhaust manifold on the opposite side. The DOHC valvetrain
operates twenty-four valves - four per cylinder - via roller finger
followers. The camshafts are driven by a silent-type roller chain from
the crankshaft, with automatic hydraulic tensioners maintaining optimal
chain tension.
The combustion chambers are of a re-entrant bowl-in-piston design
optimized for common-rail injection. Four valves per cylinder provide
high volumetric efficiency and allow central placement of the fuel
injector. The exhaust valves are sodium-filled for enhanced heat
dissipation. Valve clearance is maintained by hydraulic lash adjusters
integrated into the valvetrain, eliminating periodic manual adjustments.
Head Material: Cast iron.
Valve Configuration: DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder with roller finger
followers and hydraulic lash adjusters.
Valve Diameter (Intake): 30.0 mm (1.18 in).
Valve Diameter (Exhaust): 28.0 mm (1.10 in).
Valve Stem Diameter: 6.0 mm (0.24 in).
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees.
The D6-440 employs a common-rail direct injection system with
piezoelectric injectors. A high-pressure fuel pump - a radial-piston
type - draws fuel from the tank and delivers it to a common rail
accumulator mounted on the engine. The system operates at pressures up
to 160.0 MPa (23,200 psi). Six piezoelectric injectors, one per
cylinder, are controlled by the engine control unit with precision
unmatched by solenoid injectors.
Piezoelectric technology provides faster response times and multiple
injection events per combustion cycle - pilot injection, main injection,
and post-injection - reducing combustion noise, improving cold-start
performance, and enabling particulate filter regeneration. The
electronic vessel control (EVC) system integrates fully with the fuel
management strategy.
Injection Type: Common-rail direct injection with piezoelectric
injectors
Maximum Injection Pressure: 160.0 MPa (23,200 psi)
High-Pressure Pump: Radial-piston type, cam-driven
Injector Type: Piezoelectric, multi-hole nozzle
Fuel Requirement: Diesel fuel with minimum cetane number of 45
Fuel Filters: Primary water separator and secondary fine filter
(2-micron rating recommended)
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump design utilizing
a gear-type oil pump mounted to the front of the crankshaft and driven
by the gear train. The oil pump draws lubricant from a
corrosion-protected cast aluminum oil pan through a mesh strainer and
circulates it through a full-flow, replaceable oil filter before
entering the main oil gallery. A water-cooled oil cooler is integrated
into the system to stabilize oil temperature under sustained high-load
marine operation.
Oil Type: Diesel-rated (Volvo Penta VDS-4.5 or higher, API CI-4 or CJ-4)
Oil Capacity (with filter): 12.5 liters (13.2 US qt)
Oil Pressure (at rated speed): 400-500 kPa (58-73 psi)
Oil Pressure (at idle): 150 kPa (22 psi) minimum
Oil Pump Type: Gear-type, gear train-driven
0A defining feature of the D6-440 is its two-stage air charging system.
A mechanical Roots-type supercharger, driven by a belt from the
crankshaft, provides instantaneous boost pressure at low engine speeds.
An electronically controlled clutch engages the supercharger below
approximately 1,600-1,800 rpm. As engine speed increases, a
fixed-geometry turbocharger builds boost pressure; the supercharger
clutch disengages, and the engine operates on turbocharger-only air
delivery. A seawater-cooled aftercooler (charge air cooler) reduces
intake air temperature, increasing air density and combustion
efficiency.
Low-Speed Air Charging: Mechanical Roots-type supercharger with
electronic clutch (active below 1,600-1,800 rpm).
High-Speed Air Charging: Fixed-geometry turbocharger.
Charge Air Cooling: Seawater-cooled aftercooler.
Boost Pressure: Controlled by supercharger displacement and turbocharger
wastegate.
The marine cooling system is a pressurized, freshwater-cooled
(closed-loop) design with a seawater (raw water) cooling circuit for the
heat exchanger and aftercooler. A centrifugal-type freshwater
circulation pump, driven by the front engine belt, circulates coolant
through the cylinder block, cylinder head, and oil cooler. A separate
seawater pump - a flexible impeller type - draws seawater through a
strainer, a heat exchanger, and the aftercooler before discharging
overboard. A wax-pellet thermostat regulates the freshwater circuit to
maintain optimal operating temperature.
Coolant Type: Ethylene-glycol based marine antifreeze with corrosion
inhibitors
Coolant Capacity (engine circuit): 13.0 liters (13.7 US qt)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82 °C (180 °F)
Seawater Pump: Flexible impeller type
