The Volvo Penta D3-130 is an in-line
5-cylinder, 2.4-liter diesel engine designed for marine applications.
Based on a refined aluminum cylinder block, it features common-rail fuel
injection, double overhead camshafts, and a variable geometry
turbocharger (VGT) for excellent torque and acceleration across the
entire operating range. This engine is available with Aquamatic
sterndrive (SX/DPS), inboard shaft drive with hydraulic gearbox, or as
the D3-130 S variant paired with a 150S saildrive unit.
The D3-130 represents a significant advancement in marine diesel
technology, adapted from the successful Volvo Cars diesel engine
architecture. Launched in 2003, this engine was designed to meet future
emissions standards (EPA and EU 2006 requirements) while delivering
smooth, responsive power. The 5-cylinder configuration provides natural
balance without requiring balance shafts, reducing vibration and
improving comfort.
The use of aluminum throughout the engine block and cylinder head
achieves a high power-to-weight ratio of 130 hp from only 215 kg dry
weight. The integration with Volvo Penta's Electronic Vessel Control
(EVC) system offers advanced monitoring, electronic shift and throttle
control, plus protection features such as progressive power delivery
until the engine reaches operating temperature. Known for fuel
efficiency and low emissions, the D3-130 is suitable for both planing
hulls (25-45 knots) and displacement vessels.
