The Mitsubishi S16R is a 16-cylinder, 60-degree
V-type diesel engine designed for high-output industrial, marine, and
power generation applications. This engine is the larger counterpart to
the S12R, sharing many internal components while delivering
significantly higher power for large-scale power plants and heavy marine
vessels. The S16R is produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine and
Turbocharger (MHIET) and is manufactured in both Japan and France.
The engine utilizes proprietary MHIET mechanical fuel system and
turbocharger technology, ensuring economical fuel consumption and
maximized power output within a minimized installation footprint. Its
design features individual cylinder heads for each cylinder, simplifying
inspection and maintenance procedures. The S16R is offered in multiple
variants adapted to specific duty cycles, including the S16R-PTA for
constant-speed industrial generator sets, the S16R-MPTK for marine
propulsion, and high-speed variants for standby power.

The cylinder block is manufactured from high-strength cast iron using a
60-degree V-angle configuration. The block is a wet-liner design,
accepting sixteen individually replaceable cylinder liners. This design
permits direct coolant contact around the full circumference of each
liner barrel, providing superior heat dissipation from the combustion
zone.
The block incorporates a deep-skirt design with cross-bolted main
bearing caps to provide the structural rigidity required to withstand
cylinder pressures exceeding 200 bar under full load. An integrated oil
gallery runs the full length of the block, supplying pressurized oil to
the main bearings and piston cooling jets. Each cylinder has a separate
cylinder head, eliminating single-head warpage concerns and simplifying
service access.
Each cylinder utilizes an individual cast-iron cylinder head, a design
that simplifies replacement and reduces repair costs compared to a
single monobloc head. The valve arrangement uses four valves per
cylinder, two intake and two exhaust, arranged in a cross-flow
configuration for optimal airflow. The exhaust system incorporates
exhaust connectors and manifolds positioned between the cylinder heads
with printed direction markings on the gaskets ("MANIFOLD" side faces
the connector).
Valve rotators are equipped to induce rotation and prevent carbon
buildup. Valve lash adjustment requires a cold engine with specified
clearances of 0.40 mm (0.0157 in) for intake valves and 0.50 mm (0.0197
in) for exhaust valves. Hydraulic lash adjusters are not used; manual
adjustment is required through set screws and locknuts on the rocker
arms. The cylinder head gasket is a multi-layer steel design. During
reassembly, engine oil is applied to the threads and seat surfaces of
the head bolts before installation.
The fuel system is a mechanical pump-line-nozzle direct injection system
utilizing two in-line injection pumps mounted on the engine block. This
system is a proprietary MHIET design, noted for its reliability and
economical fuel consumption. Each pump serves eight cylinders. Injection
nozzles are of the multi-hole type, positioned centrally in the
combustion chamber.
Fuel delivery is controlled by a mechanical or electronic governor,
dependent on the specific application variant with electrical governors
used in generator configurations. The system uses a fuel feed pump with
a maximum suction power of 75 mm Hg and a maximum return feed pump
pressure of 150 mm Hg. Fuel specifications require standard diesel fuel
meeting relevant emission standards.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed, full-flow pressurized system
using a gear-type oil pump mounted on the timing gear housing. A
seawater-cooled oil cooler is integrated into the system to maintain
stable oil temperatures under continuous high-load operation. The system
uses spin-on, full-flow oil filters with a cellulose media. Piston
cooling is achieved through nozzle jets that direct oil to the underside
of each piston crown, critical for managing thermal loads in a
high-output V-16 engine.
The engine oil capacity including filters and tubes is 230 L (60.8 gal).
The recommended oil grade is API CD or CF, SAE 30 or SAE 40, selected
based on ambient operating temperature. Oil consumption under full load
is 0.8 percent of fuel consumption. An oil temperature sensor is
standard equipment.
The cooling system is a seawater-cooled, pressurized system with a
centrifugal water pump. The system uses indirect cooling for the engine
jacket water, with seawater circulating through a heat exchanger. A
separate cooling circuit is provided for the charge air cooler
(aftercooler), which uses direct seawater cooling on some variants.
The thermostat is a wax-pellet design. The total coolant capacity for
the engine is 170 L (45 gal) for the engine jacket alone. However,
complete system capacity including radiator, piping, and expansion tank
ranges from 368 L to 400 L (97 to 106 gal), dependent on the
installation. A low coolant level sensor is standard equipment to
prevent overheating.
Timing Drive: A front-mounted gear train drives the camshafts, fuel
injection pumps, and auxiliary equipment. All gears are helical-cut
steel for durability and quiet operation.
Turbocharger: The turbocharger is a proprietary MHIET unit, designed and
manufactured in-house. The S16R-PTA variant uses a single turbocharger,
while higher-output variants may use two units.
Crankcase Ventilation: A closed crankcase ventilation system with an oil
separator routes blow-by gases back into the intake system.
Electrical System: A 24-volt electrical system is standard, utilizing
two 12-volt batteries in series. The starting system uses two 7.5 kW
electric starter motors, with three starters used on some marine
applications. An electronic governor is standard on generator
applications.
Air Intake System: A dry-type air filter is standard equipment.
Exhaust System: The exhaust system includes an exhaust gas compensator
(flexible section) to accommodate thermal expansion. The inner diameter
of the exhaust pipe is 340 mm (13.4 in).
Dry Weight (Engine only): 6,200 to 7,500 kg (13,668 to 16,535 lb),
