The Mitsubishi 8DC9 is a heavy-duty,
8-cylinder, V-type diesel engine that served as a mainstay for the
Mitsubishi Fuso heavy truck lineup (such as the FV415) and various
industrial applications throughout the 1980s and 1990s. It is known for
its balance of displacement and durability, bridging the gap between the
smaller 8DC8 and the larger 8DC10 and 10DC11 engines within the DC
series. The engine was produced in naturally aspirated, turbocharged,
and twin-turbocharged configurations, with later variants featuring
intercoolers for enhanced performance.
The Mitsubishi 8DC9 represented a continuation of the DC engine series
that began development in 1967 to meet the demands of the burgeoning
Japanese expressway network. Built with a 90-degree V8 configuration,
the engine utilizes a 135 mm bore and 140 mm stroke to achieve a
displacement of 16.03 liters. It employs a direct injection fuel system
and a 4-stroke, water-cooled design.
The Mitsubishi 8DC9 became a popular choice for heavy-duty commercial
vehicles and stationary industrial power units due to its reliability
and straightforward mechanical construction. It was progressively
updated to comply with Japanese emissions regulations from 1979 through
the mid-1990s, with certain variants receiving power upgrades each model
cycle. While later superseded by the 8M series engines in the early
2000s, the 8DC9 remained in production for industrial use for several
years.
