The John Deere 6619 is a heavy-duty 6-cylinder
naturally aspirated, turbocharged, and turbocharged-intercooled diesel
engine from the 500 Series family. Displacing 10.1 liters, it was the
largest powerplant in this series and served extensively in agricultural
tractors, construction equipment, and industrial machinery throughout
the 1970s and 1980s. This engine famously powered the John Deere 6030,
7520, 8430, 8440, 8630, 8640, and 8650 tractors, as well as large
scrapers and excavators.
The 6619 was produced in multiple variants: the naturally aspirated
6619A, the turbocharged 6619T, and versions with charge-air cooling for
enhanced performance. Its robust 6-cylinder inline configuration with a
130.2 mm bore and 127.0 mm stroke delivered exceptional torque
characteristics suited for demanding agricultural and construction
applications. The engine utilized a Bosch P-Series inline injection pump
and was designed for serviceability in harsh operating environments.

The cylinder block is constructed from high-grade cast iron with a
deep-skirt design extending below the crankshaft centerline, providing
the rigidity required for sustained high-load operation. The block
features wet-type cylinder liners that are replaceable, allowing for
engine rebuilding without block replacement. Cylinder liner protrusion
above the block deck must be set between 0.025-0.102 mm (0.001-0.004 in)
to ensure proper head gasket sealing.
Seven main bearings support the forged steel crankshaft, with the
bearing caps secured by studs or bolts torqued to specification. The
main journal diameter is specified at 95.2 mm (3.748-3.750 in). The
block incorporates an integral oil gallery running the full length of
the cylinder bank, supplying lubricant to the main bearings, camshaft
bearings, and valvetrain. Cast-in water jackets surround each cylinder
for uniform cooling distribution.
0The cylinder head is manufactured from cast iron and designed as a
single unit covering all six cylinders, a configuration that enhances
rigidity and simplifies gasket sealing. The overhead valve arrangement
employs pushrods and rocker arms actuated by a camshaft located within
the cylinder block. Intake valves are larger in diameter compared to
exhaust valves, reflecting the diesel engine’s air induction
requirements.
Valve lash adjustments are performed with the engine cold using a feeler
gauge between the rocker arm and valve stem tip. Intake valve clearance
is set at 0.013-0.017 in (0.33-0.43 mm). Exhaust valve clearance is set
at 0.023-0.027 in (0.58-0.69 mm). Valve seat inserts are pressed into
the head and machined at 45-degree angles, with exhaust seats receiving
stellite facing for high-temperature durability. The valve guides are
replaceable and made from phosphor bronze or cast iron depending on
production series.
The fuel system utilizes a direct injection configuration with an inline
injection pump, manufactured either by Bosch (P-Series) or Denso
depending on the variant and production date. The pump is mounted on the
side of the cylinder block and gear-driven from the camshaft. Six
individual high-pressure injection lines deliver fuel to the injection
nozzles, which are positioned centrally within each combustion chamber.
The governor system is mechanical, providing both speed control and load
response characteristics calibrated for mobile equipment applications. A
fuel transfer pump, either diaphragm or plunger type depending on the
variant, supplies fuel from the tank to the injection pump at low
pressure. A fuel filter with a replaceable element and water separator
is mounted between the transfer pump and injection pump to protect the
precision injection components from contamination.
The lubrication system is a wet-sump configuration utilizing a gear-type
oil pump mounted on the front of the crankshaft. The pump draws oil from
the sump through a fixed mesh pickup screen and delivers it through a
full-flow spin-on oil filter mounted on the cylinder block. System
capacity varies by oil pan configuration and application, ranging from
26.5 to 30.3 liters (28-32 qt). A larger capacity pan may be specified
for scrapers and other equipment operating on severe slopes.
Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 15W-40 meeting API CD, CE, or CF
specifications. Oil pressure at rated speed is maintained between
3.1-4.5 bar (45-65 psi). A pressure relief valve integrated into the oil
pump housing opens at 4.8 bar (70 psi) to limit maximum system pressure.
The oil pan incorporates baffles and a windage tray to prevent oil
starvation during operation on inclines. Piston cooling jets direct oil
to the underside of each piston crown for thermal management, essential
for turbocharged variants operating at higher specific outputs.
The cooling system is a pressurized liquid-cooled configuration with a
gear-driven centrifugal water pump mounted on the front of the engine. A
wax-pellet thermostat located in the water outlet housing initiates
opening at 82°C (180°F) and reaches full open at 95°C (203°F). System
capacity varies by application and radiator size, ranging from 33 to
42.6 liters (35-45 qt).
An engine-driven fan with a viscous clutch provides variable cooling
airflow based on radiator temperature. A pressurized expansion tank
maintains system pressure at approximately 0.7 bar (10 psi) to raise the
boiling point of the coolant. Coolant specified is ethylene glycol-based
mixed at a 40:60 to 50:50 ratio with distilled water, incorporating
supplemental coolant additives (SCAs) to protect against cavitation
erosion of wet cylinder liners.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: Dry-type air cleaner with replaceable paper filter
element incorporating a restriction indicator to signal when filter
service is required. Turbocharged variants utilize an air-to-air or

stack or muffler. Turbocharged variants mount the turbocharger directly
to the exhaust manifold outlet.
