The John Deere 6068TF275 is a 6.8-liter,
naturally aspirated design that becomes a turbocharged inline-six diesel
engine, part of the PowerTech 6000 family. Produced for industrial and
generator-drive applications, it meets Tier 2 and Stage II emissions
standards without requiring exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) or a diesel
particulate filter (DPF). The engine architecture prioritizes structural
rigidity and serviceability, utilizing replaceable wet cylinder liners
and a robust gear train for auxiliary drives.
The “TF” designation indicates turbocharged operation without an
aftercooler, relying on a compact intake manifold arrangement suitable
for continuous-duty cycles. Known for a broad torque rise of 20 percent,
this engine provides stable performance under variable electrical loads
and mechanical drives. Its inline-six configuration delivers inherent
primary and secondary balance, eliminating the need for balance shafts
and ensuring smooth operation at a 1,800 rpm generator speed.
The John Deere 6068TF275 is a four-cycle, turbocharged, inline-six
diesel engine. The cylinder arrangement is vertical, in-line. The bore
measures 106.0 mm (4.17 in) and the stroke is 127.0 mm (5.00 in),
resulting in a total displacement of 6,800 cc (415 cu.in). The
compression ratio is 17.0:1. The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Rotation
is clockwise when viewed from the flywheel end. Rated speed varies by
application: 1,800 rpm for 60 Hz generator sets, and 2,200-2,500 rpm for
industrial intermittent duty.
Power output (SAE J1995 net) for industrial intermittent applications
ranges from 101 to 127 kW (135-170 hp). For generator applications at
1,800 rpm, standby power is 123 kW (165 hp) and prime power is 112 kW
(150 hp). Peak torque is 582 Nm (429 lb-ft) at 1,400 rpm. Torque rise is
20 percent above rated torque at rated speed. Low idle speed is 850-900
rpm. Governor type is electronic isochronous for generator applications
and variable speed for industrial applications.
The cylinder block is constructed from high-strength cast gray iron with
a deep-skirt design extending below the crankshaft centerline. A
critical feature is the use of replaceable wet-type cylinder liners.
Each liner is precision-machined centrifugally cast iron, contacting the
coolant directly on its outer surface for maximum heat dissipation. The
liners are sealed at the lower end with two O-rings and at the upper end
with a compressed gasket flange.
The parent block casting serves as a structural carrier and coolant
jacket only. The crankcase incorporates seven main bearing supports for
the crankshaft, a necessary provision for the inline-six layout. The
main bearing saddles are cross-bolted with four bolts per cap for
enhanced rigidity under peak cylinder pressures. A gear train housing is
cast integrally at the front of the block, housing the camshaft drive,
fuel pump drive, and auxiliary drive gears. The oil pan mounting face is
machined flat with a full perimeter rail.
The cylinder head is a single, cast iron unit spanning the entire length
of the six cylinders. The valvetrain uses a single overhead camshaft
(SOHC) configuration operating two valves per cylinder, for a total of
12 valves. The camshaft is driven by a gear train from the crankshaft,
eliminating belts and chains. The gear train includes an idler gear that
maintains precise cam timing without requiring tensioner adjustments.
The valves are arranged in a vertical inline pattern.
Intake valve diameter is 46.0 mm (1.81 in); exhaust valve diameter is
40.0 mm (1.57 in). The valve stem seals are positive-type with a
fluorocarbon rubber construction. The combustion chamber is a
direct-injection bowl-in-piston design with a re-entrant shape that
promotes air-fuel mixing. The cylinder head joints to the block using a
multi-layer steel (MLS) head gasket with embossed sealing beads around
each cylinder bore. No hydraulic lifters are used; mechanical adjustment
is required.
The fuel system uses an electronically controlled, inline rotary
injection pump. A gear-type transfer pump, mounted on the injection pump
body, draws fuel from the tank through a primary water-separating fuel
filter. The transfer pump delivers fuel at low pressure to the injection
pump’s high-pressure chamber. The rotary pump uses a single plunger and
distributor head to meter and time fuel delivery to each cylinder. An
electronic control unit (ECU) actuates a solenoid on the pump to adjust
injection timing and fuel quantity based on engine speed, coolant
temperature, boost pressure, and throttle position.
High-pressure injection lines connect the pump to the injectors. The
injectors are mechanical unit injectors with a spring-loaded pintle,
opening at a pressure of 200-220 bar (2,900-3,200 psi). A fuel return
line routes excess fuel and injector leakage back to the tank. The
injection pump includes a cold-start advance mechanism that
automatically advances timing when coolant temperature falls below 10°C
(50°F).
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump design with a
high-volume gear-type oil pump. The pump is driven directly from the
crankshaft nose and located inside the front cover. An oil pick-up tube
with a screen draws oil from the stamped steel oil pan. A full-flow,
spin-on oil filter mounts externally on the cylinder block,
incorporating a bypass valve that opens at 2.1 bar (30 psi) differential
pressure. The system includes an oil cooler, a stacked-plate heat
exchanger using engine coolant to regulate oil temperature.
The main oil gallery runs the full length of the cylinder block on the
left side, supplying the seven main bearings. Cross-drilled passages in
the crankshaft feed the connecting rod bearings. A secondary gallery
supplies the camshaft bearings and rocker arm shaft. The system includes
piston cooling oil jets: individual nozzles screwed into the main
bearing caps, aimed at the underside of each piston crown. Total oil
system capacity, including filter and cooler, is 18.9 L (20.0 qt / 5.0
gal). Operating oil pressure at rated speed is 3.4-4.5 bar (50-65 psi).
The oil pressure relief valve is set at 5.2 bar (75 psi).
The cooling system is a thermostatically controlled, pressurized liquid
cooling system using a centrifugal water pump. The pump is belt-driven
from the crankshaft pulley and mounted to the front of the cylinder
block. Coolant circulates through the block, cylinder head, oil cooler,
and radiator or heat exchanger. A wax-pellet thermostat with a rated
opening temperature of 82°C (180°F) is located in a housing on the water
pump inlet.
A second thermostat (optional) provides tighter temperature control for
generator applications. The coolant temperature sensor provides input to
the ECU and the instrument panel gauge. The system uses a coolant
recovery reservoir with a pressure cap rated at 0.7-1.0 bar (10-15 psi).
Water pump capacity at rated speed is 250 L/min (66 gal/min). Heat
rejection to coolant at full load is 85 kW (5,100 BTU/min). Engine
jacket water capacity (engine only) is 10.4 L (11.0 qt / 2.75 gal).
Total system coolant capacity including radiator is 30 L (31.7 qt / 7.9
gal).
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air Intake System: A dry-type, two-stage air cleaner with a replaceable
primary element feeds the turbocharger compressor. The turbocharger is a
wastegated design with a cast iron turbine housing. Compressed air
passes through a charge air cooler only on certain variants; the TF275
designation indicates no aftercooler, so air flows directly from the
compressor outlet to the intake manifold. The intake manifold is a cast
aluminum piece with equal-length runners to each cylinder.
Exhaust System: A pulse-type cast iron exhaust manifold uses divided
passages to separate exhaust pulses from cylinders 1-2-3 and 4-5-6,
improving turbocharger response. The manifold connects to the
turbocharger turbine inlet. Exhaust gas temperature at rated load is
600-650°C (1,112-1,202°F) measured before the turbine. The system meets
EPA Tier 2 and EU Stage II emission standards.
The electrical system operates at 12 volt or 24 volt DC with negative
ground as ordered for the application. The charging system uses a
belt-driven alternator rated at 120-160 amps for 12 volt systems and 70
amps for 24 volt systems. The starting system includes a reduction-gear
starter motor with a cold cranking rating of 3.5 kW for 12 volt systems.
Glow plugs are installed in the intake manifold, not in the cylinders,
operating on a timer relay controlled by coolant temperature.
Governor System: The electronic governor is integral to the fuel
injection pump ECU. The system provides isochronous governing for
generator applications, maintaining speed within ±0.5 percent under
steady load. For industrial applications, the governor is
droop-adjustable from 0 to 10 percent. Speed sensing uses an
electromagnetic pickup reading the flywheel ring gear teeth.
Overall length from the front accessory drive to the flywheel housing
mounting face is 1,104 mm (43.5 in). Width across the cylinder block,
including the injection pump and oil filter, is 623 mm (24.5 in). Height
from the oil pan rail to the top of the rocker arm cover is 1,012 mm
(39.8 in).
The dry weight of the fully dressed engine, including flywheel,
alternator, starter, turbocharger, and exhaust manifold but without
fluids, is 587 kg (1,294 lb). The center of gravity is located 486 mm
(19.1 in) from the flywheel housing face and 210 mm (8.3 in) above the
crankshaft centerline.
Engine Oil: Change interval is 500 hours under normal operating
conditions using API CI-4 or CJ-4 rated oil. Oil grade is SAE 15W-40 for
ambient temperatures above -15°C (5°F), or SAE 5W-40 for cold climates.
System volume is 18.9 L (20.0 qt). The initial oil change occurs at 100
hours. Fuel Filters: The primary fuel filter/water separator element is
replaced every 500 hours. The secondary (final) fuel filter on the
injection pump is replaced concurrently.
Air Cleaner: The primary air filter element requires inspection every
250 hours and replacement when the restriction indicator shows a vacuum
of 6.2 kPa (25 in H₂O). The secondary safety element is replaced every
third primary element change. Cooling System: Coolant replacement
interval is 2,000 hours or 24 months. Use a low-silicate, fully
formulated ethylene glycol coolant meeting John Deere Cool-Gard
specification. The coolant filter element (if equipped) is replaced at
500 hours.
Valve Clearance: Inspection and adjustment are required every 1,500
hours. Cold valve clearances are: intake 0.36 mm (0.014 in), exhaust
0.46 mm (0.018 in). Adjust on a warm engine at operating temperature for
final verification. Injector Replacement: Injectors are replaced at
5,000 hours as a matched set. Injection pump calibration requires dealer
service tools.
