The John Deere 4219T is a 3.6-liter,
inline-four cylinder turbocharged diesel engine produced by John Deere
at its Saran (France) and Dubuque (USA) facilities. This engine belongs
to the 219 cubic inch displacement family and utilizes a turbocharger
designated by the "T" suffix, contrasting with the naturally aspirated
4219D variant. The 4219T served extensively in construction equipment
such as the 410 series backhoe loaders and 450/550 crawler dozers, as
well as industrial power units. A known characteristic includes the use
of replaceable wet-type cylinder liners, which facilitate engine
overhaul without block replacement.
The 4219T represents a short-stroke, high-speed diesel design compared
to the later 4045 series engines. With a bore of 102 mm (4.02 in) and
stroke of 110 mm (4.33 in), the engine produces a bore/stroke ratio of
0.93:1, favoring higher operating speeds while maintaining adequate
torque characteristics. The 16.2:1 compression ratio enables reliable
cold starting and efficient combustion under turbocharged induction.
The mechanical fuel system employs a Roosa Master or Stanadyne rotary
distributor pump, designated as the JDB model series. The engine
produces 70 to 85 hp (52-63 kW) at 2,500 rpm, with peak torque delivery
at 1,500 rpm. The turbocharger significantly improves power output over
the naturally aspirated 4219D variant while maintaining the same
displacement.

The cylinder block is constructed from cast iron utilizing a wet-sleeve
(replaceable liner) design. Removable wet-type cylinder liners permit
field service without complete block replacement. The liners seal at the
bottom with O-rings and at the top via compression against the cylinder
head gasket. The block includes piston cooling jets (oil squirters) that
direct engine oil to the underside of each piston for thermal management
under turbocharged operation.
Five main bearings support the crankshaft. The gear train housing at the
front contains the camshaft drive, injection pump drive, and water pump
mounting. The crankcase incorporates mounting pads for the starter motor
and fuel injection pump.
The cylinder head is a cast iron design with overhead valves actuated by
pushrods and rocker arms from a camshaft located in the cylinder block.
Each cylinder employs two valves: one intake and one exhaust. Valve lash
adjustment is performed manually via set screws and locknuts on the
rocker arms.
The combustion chamber is a direct injection design with the injector
positioned centrally. Valve seats are induction-hardened for wear
resistance in diesel operation. The intake ports are sized for
turbocharged airflow volumes. The exhaust manifold mounting flange
accommodates the turbocharger attachment. Valve Clearances (engine
cold): Intake: 0.014 in (0.36 mm). Exhaust: 0.018 in (0.46 mm).
The fuel system employs a mechanical rotary distributor injection pump
manufactured by Roosa Master (Stanadyne). The specific pump model for
the 4219T application is the Stanadyne JDB series, designated JDB-3955.
The rotary pump design uses a single pumping plunger distributing fuel
to each cylinder in firing order sequence. A mechanical governor,
integral to the injection pump, controls fuel delivery based on engine
speed and load demand.
High-pressure injection lines route fuel from the distributor pump to
individual injectors located in each cylinder head. The system includes
a primary fuel filter with water separator followed by a secondary
spin-on filter. A mechanical fuel transfer pump mounted to the injection
pump body draws fuel from the tank and supplies the pump reservoir. An
electric fuel shutoff solenoid controls engine stopping.
The lubrication system operates as a pressurized, full-flow filtered
system with a gear-type oil pump. The pump, mounted inside the oil pan
and driven by the camshaft gear train, draws oil through a screened
pickup tube. Oil passes through a full-flow spin-on filter mounted on
the cylinder block.
Pressurized oil routes to the five main bearings, connecting rod
bearings, camshaft bearings, and hydraulic tappets (if equipped). Piston
cooling jets, located in the main bearing webs, direct oil to the
underside of each piston for cooling under turbocharged loads. A
pressure relief valve maintains oil pressure within specification.
Oil Pressure at Rated Speed: 50 psi (345 kPa)
Oil Pressure at Idle: 15 psi (105 kPa)
Oil Capacity (with filter): 8.5 L (9.0 qt)
Recommended Oil: SAE 15W-40 diesel-grade, API CI-4 or higher
The cooling system is pressurized and liquid-cooled, utilizing a
belt-driven centrifugal water pump. Coolant circulates from the radiator
bottom tank through the water pump, into the cylinder block water jacket
surrounding the wet liners, upward through the cylinder head, and back
to the radiator top tank.
A wax-type thermostat in the coolant outlet housing maintains operating
temperature. A gear-driven or belt-driven fan mounted to the water pump
pulley draws air through the radiator core. The system includes a
coolant recovery tank.
Coolant Capacity (engine only): 11.4 L (12 qt)
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82-88°C (180-190°F)
Coolant Type: Ethylene glycol-based with supplemental coolant additives
Turbocharging System: Single exhaust-driven turbocharger mounted to the
exhaust manifold. The turbocharger compresses intake air before delivery
to the intake manifold, increasing volumetric efficiency and power
output.

Starting System: Electric starter with solenoid engagement. Glow plugs
or intake air heater provided for cold start assistance.
Air Intake System: Dry-type replaceable element air cleaner with
