The John Deere 4045TF220 is a 4.5-liter,
turbocharged, inline four-cylinder diesel engine from the PowerTech 4045
family. Designed for off-highway applications, this engine delivers
reliable mechanical power for construction, agricultural, and industrial
equipment. The “TF” designation confirms a turbocharged, fixed-geometry
configuration, distinguishing it from later electronic or
variable-geometry units.
This engine operates on a mechanical direct injection system, which
provides straightforward serviceability in demanding field conditions.
Engineers optimized the 4045TF220 for steady-state operation and
intermittent high-load cycles, making it suitable for backhoes, utility
tractors, and hydraulic power units. The engine features a robust
wet-sleeve cylinder liner design, allowing in-chassis overhaul without
complete engine removal.
With a conservative power rating of 63 kW (84 hp) at 2500 rpm, this
powerplant prioritizes longevity and torque rise over peak output. The
17.0:1 compression ratio balances cold-start capability with combustion
stability under full load. John Deere produced this engine to meet Tier
2 and interim Tier 3 emissions standards, relying entirely on internal
engine design without exhaust after-treatment.
The John Deere 4045TF220 is a four-cycle, in-line, four-cylinder diesel
engine with a displacement of 4.5 liters, equivalent to 275 cubic
inches. Bore measures 106 mm (4.19 in) with a stroke of 127 mm (5.00
in), producing an undersquare configuration that emphasizes torque
development at lower engine speeds. The compression ratio is fixed at
17.0:1.
Aspiration is provided by a turbocharger with a fixed-geometry housing,
without an intercooler on this specific TF220 variant. The firing order
is 1-3-4-2. Rotation is counterclockwise when viewed from the flywheel
end. Rated intermittent power reaches 63 kW (84 hp) at 2500 rpm, with
peak torque of 334 Nm (246 lb-ft) occurring at 1500 rpm. Rated speed is
2500 rpm, while low idle speed spans 850 to 950 rpm. The engine
management relies entirely on mechanical governor control within the
injection pump.
The cylinder block is constructed from high-grade cast iron, providing a
rigid foundation for all rotating and reciprocating components. This
engine utilizes replaceable wet-sleeve cylinder liners, a design where
the liner contacts the engine coolant directly. Each liner is a
centrifugally cast iron component with a flanged top to ensure precise
seating against the cylinder head gasket. Wet-sleeve construction
permits individual cylinder replacement without reboring the block,
reducing overhaul costs.
The block incorporates five main bearing webs, each machined in line to
accept the main bearing caps. A deep-skirt design extends the block
below the crankshaft centerline, enhancing torsional stiffness. Cooling
passages surround each liner along their entire length, distributing
thermal load evenly. Cast-in passages direct lubricating oil to the main
bearings, camshaft bearings, and the turbocharger feed line. The block
also includes mounting pads for the fuel injection pump, water pump, and
starter motor.
The cylinder head is a single cast-iron component covering all four
cylinders. It uses an overhead valve (OHV) configuration with two valves
per cylinder - one intake and one exhaust - resulting in eight valves
total. Valve arrangement is parallel, with valves actuated by a camshaft
located within the cylinder block. Pushrods transfer motion from the
camshaft to rocker arms mounted on a central shaft in the cylinder head.
Exhaust valves are manufactured from a high-temperature nickel-chromium
alloy to withstand combustion heat.
Intake valves are produced from silicon-chromium steel. Both valves
feature hardened tips and run in replaceable cast-iron guides. The valve
seat inserts are induction-hardened and pressed into the cylinder head.
Valve lash is adjustable via set screws on the rocker arms, requiring
periodic inspection. The cylinder head gasket is a multilayer steel
(MLS) design with etched sealing beads around each cylinder bore and
fluid passage.
The fuel system is a mechanical direct injection design without
electronic controls. Fuel delivery begins with a mechanical lift pump
mounted on the cylinder block, drawing fuel from the tank through a
primary spin-on filter and water separator. The lift pump supplies fuel
to the injection pump at low pressure. The injection pump is a Stanadyne
DB4 series rotary distributor pump, a mechanically governed unit that
distributes high-pressure fuel to each cylinder in the correct firing
order.
This pump contains a internal vane-type transfer pump, a high-pressure
rotor, and a mechanical governor that regulates fuel delivery based on
engine speed and load. Injection timing is adjusted manually by rotating
the pump mounting flange. The pump delivers fuel through four
high-pressure steel lines to the injectors. Each injector is a
pencil-type, hole-type nozzle with a specified opening pressure,
injecting fuel directly into the combustion chamber formed within the
piston crown. Excess fuel returns to the tank through a spill line.
The lubrication system is a pressurized, full-flow filtration design
using a gear-type positive displacement pump. The pump is mounted on the
front of the engine and driven directly by the crankshaft gear. Oil is
drawn from a stamped steel oil pan through a pick-up tube with a mesh
screen. Total system oil capacity is 13.0 liters, equivalent to 13.7
U.S. quarts. Operating oil pressure at rated speed ranges from 35 to 50
psi, measured at the cylinder block gallery.
A spin-on full-flow oil filter is mounted externally on the block,
featuring a built-in bypass valve that opens when the filter becomes
restricted. The system also incorporates a pressure relief valve
calibrated to limit maximum oil pressure. Lubrication circuits supply
oil to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft
bearings, rocker arm assembly, and the turbocharger center housing.
Engine oil grade recommendations depend on ambient temperature, with SAE
15W-40 being the most common multi-grade choice for this engine.
The cooling system is a pressurized, thermosiphon-with-pump design using
a centrifugal water pump driven by the front accessory drive belt.
Coolant capacity for the engine only, excluding radiator and external
hoses, is 8.5 liters (9.0 U.S. quarts). The system operates under a
pressure cap rated to maintain coolant liquid phase up to higher
temperatures. A wax-pellet thermostat located in a housing on the
cylinder head controls coolant flow. The thermostat begins to open at
82°C (180°F) and reaches full travel at 95°C (203°F).
When the thermostat is closed, coolant recirculates within the engine
block and head for rapid warm-up. After opening, coolant flows through
the radiator for heat rejection. The water pump circulates coolant
through passages cast into the cylinder block surrounding each wet
liner, then up into the cylinder head, and finally out to the thermostat
housing. A coolant filter may be fitted on some installations, but it is
not standard on the TF220.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air Intake System: Ambient air passes through a dry-type, two-stage air
cleaner (supplied by the equipment manufacturer) before entering the
turbocharger compressor housing. Compressed air from the turbocharger
travels through a short rubber hose directly to the intake manifold. No
charge air cooler is used on the TF220.
Exhaust System: Cast-iron exhaust manifold collects gases from all four
cylinders into a single outlet, flanged for connection to the OEM
exhaust pipe. The turbocharger turbine housing is bolted directly to
this manifold.
The engine accepts either a 12-volt or 24-volt electrical configuration
depending on the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specification.
The starter motor is a direct-drive or gear-reduction type mounted to
the flywheel housing. A belt-driven alternator provides charging
current: 12-volt systems use a 90-amp unit, while 24-volt systems use a
50-amp unit. Glow plugs are installed in the cylinder head, one per
cylinder, to aid cold starting. The glow plug relay is controlled by a
temperature-sensitive switch.
