The John Deere 4045H is a 4.5-liter, inline
4-cylinder diesel engine from the PowerTech family, produced by John
Deere Power Systems. This engine represents a modern evolution in
off-highway power generation, incorporating high-pressure common-rail
(HPCR) fuel injection and advanced electronic controls. The 4045H
designation indicates a 4-cylinder, 4.5-liter displacement engine with a
horizontal configuration designed for various industrial, agricultural,
and generator drive applications.
Depending on the emission certification tier (Tier 3, Interim Tier 4, or
Final Tier 4), the engine utilizes different combinations of
aftertreatment technologies, including diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC),
diesel particulate filters (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction
(SCR) systems. The engine features a robust cast iron construction with
replaceable wet cylinder liners, oil-cooled pistons, and a forged steel
crankshaft supported by five main bearings. The 4045H platform offers
multiple power ratings across industrial, generator, and material
handling applications, with oil change intervals extended to 500 hours
under conditions.
The John Deere PowerTech 4045H is a 4-stroke, inline 4-cylinder diesel
engine designed for continuous heavy-duty operation. The engine
architecture follows a conventional inline configuration with an even
firing interval of 180 degrees. The bore and stroke relationship is
oversquare, with stroke exceeding bore to promote high torque at low
engine speeds. The engine is turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled
(ATAAC) across all power variants. The compression ratio varies between
17.0:1 and 19.0:1 depending on the emission tier and combustion system
calibration.

The cylinder block is constructed from high-strength cast iron using a
deep-skirt design that extends the cylinder walls below the crankshaft
centerline. This configuration provides superior rigidity and minimizes
torsional flex during heavy load operation. The block incorporates
replaceable wet cylinder liners, allowing individual sleeves to be
removed and replaced during overhaul without machining the block itself.
Each wet liner contacts engine coolant directly on its external surface,
providing superior heat transfer from the combustion zone. The block
contains five main bearing bulkheads with reinforced ribbing to support
the forged steel crankshaft. Cast-in passages route oil from the pump to
the main bearings and upward to the cylinder head through the block
deck. The crankcase incorporates a cast oil sump mounting flange with a
gasket sealing surface.
The cylinder head is manufactured from cast iron and varies between
2-valve and 4-valve configurations depending on the emission tier and
power rating. Lower power variants (PowerTech E) utilize a cross-flow
2-valve cylinder head design that provides excellent breathing with
reduced complexity and lower cost. Higher power variants (PowerTech
Plus) employ a 4-valve cylinder head that delivers superior airflow,
greater low-speed torque, and improved transient response time.
The valve actuation system consists of a camshaft located in the
cylinder block, hydraulic lifters, pushrods, and forged steel rocker
arms mounted on a rocker shaft. The valves are arranged in an inline
configuration with intake and exhaust valves positioned parallel to each
other. The cross-flow design places the intake manifold on one side and
the exhaust manifold on the opposite side, keeping intake air cooler and
improving volumetric efficiency. Valve seats and guides are pressed into
the head casting and are replaceable during overhaul.
Valves per Cylinder: 2 (PowerTech E) or 4 (PowerTech Plus)
Valve Arrangement: Overhead valve (OHV), cross-flow
Valve Lash (Cold): Intake 0.012-0.015 in (0.30-0.38 mm)
Valve Lash (Cold): Exhaust 0.016-0.019 in (0.41-0.48 mm)
Valve Seat Angle: 45 degrees
The fuel system employs a Denso high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) direct
injection system across all 4045H variants. The system consists of a
gear-type transfer pump, a high-pressure supply pump, a common rail
accumulator, and electronically controlled injectors for each cylinder.
The engine control unit (ECU) manages injection pressure, timing,
duration, and the number of injection events per cycle. On Tier 3 and
Stage III A engines, the system operates at pressures up to 1,600 bar
(23,000 psi) with multiple injection capability.
On Final Tier 4 and Stage V engines, injection pressure reaches 1,975
bar (29,000 psi) with advanced multiple injection strategies. The
multiple injection strategy injects fuel in several pulses per cycle,
reducing combustion temperatures and noise while lowering NOx and
particulate emissions. The system includes engine-mounted or
remote-mounted fuel filters with water separation capability. An
optional low-pressure fuel system with an electric transfer pump and
auto-prime feature is available for certain applications.
Fuel Type: Diesel (ultra-low sulfur required for Tier 4/Stage V)
Injection System: Denso HPCR
Injection Pressure (Tier 3): 1,600 bar (23,000 psi)
Injection Pressure (Final Tier 4): 1,975 bar (29,000 psi)
Governor: Electronic, integrated into ECU
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, forced-feed design with a
gear-type oil pump driven directly from the crankshaft. The pump draws
oil from the sump through a submerged strainer and delivers it under
pressure to a full-flow oil filter mounted on the engine block. Filtered
oil is routed through a main oil gallery machined into the cylinder
block. Passages direct oil to the five main bearings, with drilled
crankshaft passages feeding the connecting rod bearings.
Oil is also routed upward through external or internal passages to the
cylinder head, feeding the rocker shaft and hydraulic lifters. A
full-flow, engine-mounted oil cooler stabilizes oil temperature under
sustained high-load conditions. The system includes a pressure relief
valve that maintains operating pressure and prevents over-pressurization
at high engine speeds. The oil pan is constructed from stamped steel or
cast aluminum depending on the application.
Oil Type: SAE 15W-40 (recommended), SAE 10W-30 or 5W-40 for cold
climates.
Total Oil Capacity (including filter): 15 L (16 US qt).
Oil Pressure (Operating, warm): 35-60 psi (241-414 kPa).
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on, full-flow.
Oil Change Interval: 500 operating hours .
Oil Cooler Type: Plate-type, engine-mounted, coolant-cooled.
The cooling system is a pressurized, forced-circulation design. A
centrifugal water pump, mounted on the front of the cylinder block and
driven by a V-ribbed belt from the crankshaft pulley, circulates coolant
through the engine and radiator. Coolant enters the pump, is discharged
into the cylinder block, and flows upward around the wet cylinder liners
and into the cylinder head. The coolant then travels forward through the
cylinder head to the thermostat housing. A wax-pellet thermostat
regulates coolant flow to the radiator.
When closed, coolant bypasses the radiator for rapid warm-up; when open,
coolant is directed to the radiator top tank, passes downward through
the core tubes, and returns to the pump. The air-to-air aftercooler
(ATAAC) is a separate system that cools intake air after the
turbocharger, reducing intake air temperature to improve combustion
efficiency and lower NOx emissions. A belt-driven fan mounted on the
water pump hub draws air through both the radiator and the aftercooler
core. An optional factory-installed variable-speed fan drive is
available to improve fuel economy and reduce noise levels.
Coolant Type: Ethylene glycol antifreeze with supplemental coolant
additives
Engine Only Coolant Capacity: 8.5 L (9.0 US qt)
Total Cooling System Capacity (with radiator): Varies by chassis
Thermostat Opening Temperature: 82-88 °C (180-190 °F)
Radiator Cap Pressure: 7-10 psi (48-69 kPa)
Water Pump Type: Centrifugal, sealed bearing, belt-driven
Intake System: Air enters through a heavy-duty air cleaner and passes
through the turbocharger compressor. Compressed air then flows through
the air-to-air aftercooler before entering the intake manifold. The
intake manifold is a cast aluminum or composite component with a central
plenum feeding individual runners to each cylinder.
Turbocharger Systems: Three turbocharger configurations are used on the
4045H platform. Fixed geometry turbochargers are matched to specific
power levels on lower-rated variants. Wastegated turbochargers develop
increased airflow at lower engine speeds to improve low-speed torque,
bleeding excess exhaust flow at higher speeds. Variable geometry
turbochargers (VGT) are used on PowerTech Plus variants for Final Tier
4, varying exhaust pressure based on load and speed to ensure proper EGR
flow while delivering greater low-speed torque and improved fuel
economy.
Exhaust Aftertreatment: Emission control systems vary by certification
tier. Tier 3 (less regulated) engines operate without aftertreatment.
Interim Tier 4 engines may use DOC/DPF or DOC/SCR combinations. Final
Tier 4/Stage V engines employ a catalyzed exhaust filter containing a
DOC and DPF, with passive and active regeneration strategies. A grid
heater provides cold start assistance. Some Final Tier 4 configurations
utilize cooled EGR and an SCR system with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF)
injection to reduce NOx without a DPF.
Electrical and Electronic Systems: The engine is equipped with a John
Deere electronic control unit (ECU) that monitors critical engine
functions including speed, temperature, pressure, and aftertreatment
status. The ECU provides warning and shutdown capabilities to prevent
damage. The system includes factory-installed engine-mounted or
remote-mounted ECU options with a standard SAE J1939 CAN bus interface
for communication with vehicle systems. Standard electrical system
voltage is 12 volts, with a 24-volt option available for certain
applications. The ECU on Final Tier 4 engines has four times the memory,
twice the RAM, double the processing speed, and 40% increased
input/output capability compared to previous generations.
Cold Start System: A grid heater mounted in the intake manifold provides
intake air heating for cold weather starting. The system is controlled
automatically by the ECU based on coolant temperature and intake air
temperature.
