The Deutz TD2011L04 is a four-cycle, inline
four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine from Deutz’s 2011 family. This
engine is distinguished by its oil-cooled cylinder design, a Deutz
innovation that eliminates the need for a liquid coolant radiator in
many applications. The “TD” designation indicates Turbocharged Diesel,
while “L04” signifies the inline four-cylinder configuration.
Engineers designed this compact powerplant for mobile industrial
machinery including pavers, wheel loaders, telescopic boom lifts,
concrete saws, and rollers. The TD2011L04 produces 75 hp (56 kW) at 2600
rpm, with peak torque of 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) at 1600 rpm. Total
displacement is 3.62 liters (221 cu.in), achieved through a bore of 96
mm (3.8 in) and a long stroke of 125 mm (4.95 in). The compression ratio
is set at 18.0:1.
The combustion system uses direct injection with a pump-pipe-nozzle
configuration, a robust mechanical design that operates reliably with
high-sulphur fuels worldwide. The engine features two valves per
cylinder (overhead valve design) with a firing order of 1-3-4-2. Valve
lash is not specified in source data but follows Deutz standards for
this engine family. The engine dimensions are compact: 710 mm in length,
530 mm in width, and 713 mm in height.
The Deutz TD2011L04 is a four-cycle, inline four-cylinder turbocharged
diesel engine. Total displacement measures 3.62 liters, equivalent to
221 cubic inches. Bore is 96 mm (3.8 in) with a stroke of 125 mm (4.95
in), producing an undersquare configuration that favors torque
development at lower engine speeds. The compression ratio is 18.0:1. The
combustion process uses direct injection. Aspiration is turbocharged.
Cooling is oil-cooled, a unique feature where engine oil circulates
through passages around the cylinders to dissipate heat, eliminating the
need for a separate liquid coolant system in most installations.
Rated power output is 56 kW (75 hp) achieved at 2600 rpm. Maximum torque
is 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) produced at 1600 rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The injection system uses a pump-pipe-nozzle configuration, with
individual injection pumps feeding high-pressure lines to each injector.
Valves per cylinder count is two (one intake, one exhaust). Oil capacity
is 11.5 liters (12.2 U.S. quarts). Dry weight is not specified in source
data but is 320 kg (705 lb) for this engine family. The electrical
system is 12V or 24V depending on the OEM specification.
The cylinder block is constructed from high-grade cast iron with an
inline four-cylinder arrangement. The most distinctive feature of this
engine is its oil-cooled cylinder design. Instead of a liquid coolant
jacket, the block incorporates passages through which engine oil
circulates to absorb heat from the cylinders. This oil then passes
through an external oil cooler (air-cooled or water-cooled) before
returning to the engine.
This design provides several advantages: operation without risk of
freezing, no coolant leaks, and simplified installation without a
radiator or coolant hoses. The block uses monobloc construction with
integral cylinder bores, meaning no replaceable cylinder liners are
used. The bores are precision-machined directly into the parent cast
iron material. The cylinder block incorporates five main bearing webs
with reinforced bulkheads. A deep-skirt design extends the block below
the crankshaft centerline.
Mounting pads are cast into the block for the fuel injection pump
(in-line type), starter motor, alternator, turbocharger, oil cooler, and
oil filter. An oil pan rail is machined on the lower face of the block.
Cast internal oil galleries direct pressurized lubricant to all main
bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and piston cooling
jets. An integral timing gear housing is cast into the front face of the
block. All maintenance points are located on one side of the engine for
easy access.
A single cast-iron cylinder head spans all four cylinders. The head
incorporates a cross-flow design with intake ports on one side and
exhaust ports on the opposite side. The valvetrain operates as an
overhead valve (OHV) configuration with two valves per cylinder - one
intake and one exhaust - for a total of eight valves. A camshaft located
within the cylinder block actuates the valvetrain. Pushrods transfer
motion through vertical bores in the cylinder head to rocker arms.
Hardened valve seat inserts are pressed into the cylinder head. Valve
guides are pressed-in cast-iron sleeves. Valve lash is adjustable using
a screw-and-locknut mechanism on each rocker arm. The direct injection
system places the fuel injector in each cylinder head. The cylinder head
gasket is a steel laminate design. Four head bolts per cylinder provide
clamping force. The cylinder head incorporates passages for oil cooling,
as no liquid coolant circulates through the head.
The fuel system uses mechanical direct injection with a pump-pipe-nozzle
configuration. This classic Deutz design uses individual in-line
injection pumps mounted on the engine block, one per cylinder. A
mechanical gear-type or diaphragm-type fuel lift pump draws fuel from
the tank through a primary spin-on filter and water separator. The lift
pump supplies low-pressure fuel to the injection pumps.
Four individual in-line injection pumps, one for each cylinder, are
driven by the engine camshaft. Each pump contains a plunger-and-barrel
assembly that pressurizes fuel independently for its cylinder. A
mechanical centrifugal governor integrated into the injection pump
assembly regulates fuel delivery based on engine speed and load. A fuel
shutoff solenoid or manual shutoff lever provides engine stop control.
Four high-pressure steel injection lines carry fuel from the individual
pumps to the injectors.
This pump-pipe-nozzle system operates reliably with high-sulphur fuels,
making the engine suitable for worldwide operation. Each injector is a
hole-type nozzle. Injectors are installed in the cylinder head and
positioned to spray fuel directly into the piston bowl. A fuel return
line routes excess fuel and injector leakage back to the fuel tank. The
injection system is calibrated for optimum engine performance at low
fuel consumption.
The lubrication system has dual roles: lubricating moving components and
cooling the engine. The system uses a gear-type positive displacement
pump mounted on the front timing gear cover. Oil is drawn from the oil
pan through a pick-up tube fitted with a coarse mesh strainer. Total oil
capacity is 11.5 liters, equivalent to 12.2 U.S. quarts. A spin-on
full-flow oil filter is mounted externally on the block.
An external oil cooler is integrated into the lubrication circuit. This
oil cooler is either air-cooled (using a finned radiator with an
electric or engine-driven fan) or liquid-cooled (using engine coolant in
water-cooled variants). The oil cooler reduces oil temperature before it
returns to the engine. A piston cooling jet system directs oil streams
to the underside of each piston crown for thermal management.
A pressure relief valve limits maximum oil pressure. The system supplies
lubricant to the five main bearings, four connecting rod bearings,
camshaft bearings, rocker arm assembly, timing gears, turbocharger
center housing, and injection pump driveshaft. Operating oil pressure at
rated speed is maintained between 345 and 450 kPa (50 and 65 psi). The
oil pan is constructed from stamped steel. Long oil change intervals are
specified due to the robust design.
The cooling system is oil-cooled, distinguishing the TD2011L04 from
conventional liquid-cooled diesel engines. Engine oil circulates through
passages cast into the cylinder block surrounding each cylinder bore.
Heat transfers from the cylinder walls to the flowing oil. The heated
oil then exits the block and passes through an external oil cooler.
The oil cooler is either air-cooled (mounted in front of the engine with
a fan) or liquid-cooled (using a separate coolant circuit with a
radiator). After cooling, the oil returns to the engine sump and
recirculates. This oil-cooled design provides several benefits. The
engine operates without risk of freezing in cold climates. No coolant
leaks can occur.
The installation is simplified without a separate radiator, coolant
hoses, or water pump for many applications. The engine achieves best
cold starting properties even under extreme conditions. For applications
requiring additional heat rejection, a water-cooled version (TD2011L04W)
is available with an integrated liquid cooling system. The oil cooler
may be thermostatically controlled to maintain optimal oil temperature
between approximately 90°C and 110°C (194°F and 230°F).
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air Intake System: Ambient air passes through a dry-type air cleaner
before entering the turbocharger compressor. The turbocharger is a
fixed-geometry unit. Compressed air exits the turbocharger directly into
the intake manifold. No intercooler is present on this engine variant.
Exhaust System: A cast-iron exhaust manifold collects gases from all
four cylinders. The manifold is designed to maintain exhaust energy to
the turbocharger turbine. The turbocharger turbine housing is bolted
directly to the manifold outlet.
The electrical system operates at 12V or 24V DC depending on the OEM
specification. A gear-reduction starter motor is mounted on the flywheel
housing. A belt-driven alternator produces charging current with output
ratings from 55 to 95 amps. Glow plugs are installed in the cylinder
head, one per cylinder, as a cold start aid. A glow plug relay manages
pre-heat duration. The engine meets EPA Tier 3 or Tier 4i emissions
standards for power ratings below 56 kW (75 hp).
Engine length measured from the front gear cover to the flywheel housing
mounting face is 710 mm (28.0 in). Width measured across the widest
points, including the turbocharger, injection pump, and oil filter, is
530 mm (20.9 in). Height measured from the oil pan rail to the top of
the rocker arm cover is 713 mm (28.1 in).
Dry weight of the complete engine, including the flywheel, turbocharger,
alternator, and starter motor, but excluding oil, is 320 kg (705 lb).
The weight with a full oil charge adds 11 kg (24 lb). The shipping
weight on a pallet with protective packaging is 370 kg (816 lb).
