The Deutz TCD 2011 L04W is a 3.62-liter,
turbocharged and intercooled, inline four-cylinder diesel engine from
the Deutz 2011 family. This engine is designed for compact construction
and industrial machinery, including asphalt pavers, aircraft pushback
tractors, and generator sets. The TCD designation indicates Turbocharged
Common Rail Diesel, while L denotes a liquid-cooled configuration and
04W specifies a 4-cylinder water-cooled variant. The engine meets
European COM 3a emissions standards and incorporates internal exhaust
gas recirculation (EGR) for reduced NOx emissions.
The design emphasizes compact dimensions with all maintenance points
accessible from one side of the engine, reducing servicing costs and
increasing machinery availability. Deutz engineered this powerplant for
worldwide operation, including compatibility with high-sulfur fuels. The
engine achieves its power output of 100 hp at 2,600 rpm through a
combination of turbocharging, charge-air cooling, and direct injection.
The TCD 2011 L04W remains in production and is supported by Deutz's
global service network.
The Deutz TCD 2011 L04W is a four-cycle, water-cooled, inline
four-cylinder diesel engine with direct injection. The cylinder bore
measures 96.0 mm (3.78 in), while the piston stroke extends to 125.0 mm
(4.92 in), producing an undersquare configuration that favors torque
production in the mid-range. Total displacement is 3,620 cc (3.62 L /
221 cu.in). The compression ratio is 18.0:1.
The firing order is 1-3-4-2 , a standard sequence for inline-four
engines. Rated power (gross intermittent) is 74.9 kW (100 hp) at 2,600
rpm, with a continuous rating of 71.2 kW (95 hp) at the same engine
speed. Maximum torque reaches 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) at 1,600 rpm. Low idle
speed is set to 900 rpm. The direction of rotation, viewed from the
flywheel, is counter-clockwise. Specific fuel consumption at rated power
is 241.0 g/kWh (0.395 lb/hp-hr).
The cylinder block is constructed from high-grade cast iron, providing
the rigidity required for sustained operation under turbocharged and
intercooled conditions. The block features a monobloc construction with
an inline-four configuration incorporating five main bearing bulkheads
supporting the crankshaft.
A closed-circuit crankcase breather system is integrated into the block
design. The oil gallery is drilled along the right side of the block to
supply pressurized oil to the main bearings and camshaft bearings. The
water jacket surrounds the cylinders and extends upward to the block
deck. The engine number is stamped on a machined pad located on the
block.
The cylinder head is constructed from grey cast iron in a single-piece
design covering all four cylinders as one casting. The head employs an
overhead valve (OHV) configuration with two valves per cylinder, for a
total of eight valves. The valve arrangement consists of one intake and
one exhaust valve per cylinder.
The valvetrain is actuated by a camshaft located within the cylinder
block, driving pushrods and rocker arms. The cylinder head features
pressed-in replaceable valve guides. Valve seat inserts are
induction-hardened for intake ports and made of heat-resistant alloy for
exhaust ports. The cylinder head gasket is a multi-layer steel (MLS)
design.
The fuel system employs direct injection with a common rail system. The
injection system is of the pump-pipe-nozzle type. The common rail
architecture allows injection pressures up to 1,600 bar (23,000 psi),
with precise electronic control of injection timing, duration, and
pressure.
An internal EGR system is incorporated to reduce NOx emissions without
external plumbing. A diaphragm-type fuel feed pump supplies fuel from
the tank to the high-pressure pump. The fuel system includes a primary
filter with a water separator. The engine is compatible with high-sulfur
fuels for worldwide operation.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump design using
forced-feed circulation with a gear-type pump. The oil pump is mounted
inside the oil pan and driven by the crankshaft. Total oil capacity is
10.5 L (11.1 U.S. qt). The oil filter is a spin-on full-flow type.
A water-cooled oil cooler is integrated into the system. The oil pan is
constructed from stamped steel. A dipstick is located on the service
side of the engine. Recommended oil viscosity is SAE 15W-40 meeting API
CI-4 or higher diesel rating.
The cooling system is a pressurized, water-cooled design with a
belt-driven centrifugal water pump. The system is thermostatically
controlled to maintain optimal operating temperature. A charge-air
cooler (intercooler) is integrated into the cooling circuit.
The water pump circulates coolant through the cylinder block, cylinder
head, and radiator. A wax-pellet thermostat, rated at 82-88°C
(180-190°F), controls coolant flow. An optional integrated cooling
system is available for certain applications. Coolant recommendations
call for a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze and distilled
water.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air Intake System: The air intake system is turbocharged with charge-air
cooling. A fixed-geometry turbocharger provides boost pressure, with
compressed air passing through an air-to-air intercooler before entering
the intake manifold. The air cleaner is a dry-type paper element unit.
Internal EGR is used for emissions control.
Exhaust System: The exhaust manifold is a single-piece, cast iron design
merging the four cylinders. Internal EGR is integrated into the cylinder
head design.
The electrical system operates at 12 volts. The starter motor is a
gear-reduction type. The alternator rating varies by configuration. Glow
plugs are installed in each cylinder for cold start assistance,
providing excellent cold starting properties even under extreme
conditions.
Overall engine dimensions are length 720 mm (28.3 in), width 530 mm
(20.9 in), and height 710 mm (28.0 in). The dry weight of the engine
without accessories is approximately 320-350 kg (705-770 lb) depending
on configuration. The flywheel housing conforms to a standard SAE
pattern. Engine mounting feet are positioned for direct installation
into existing machinery compartments. The compact design reduces
installation costs and increases application flexibility.
Engine oil and oil filter change intervals are recommended every 500
operating hours under normal conditions. The fuel filter is replaced
every 500 hours. The air cleaner element is replaced when the
restriction indicator signals. Valve lash inspection and adjustment are
performed every 1,000 hours.
Coolant replacement is required every 2,000 hours or 24 months. The
injection timing is electronically controlled and requires no manual
adjustment. The turbocharger bearing clearance is checked every 1,500
hours. The engine is designed for high sulfur fuel compatibility,
allowing worldwide operation without fuel-related damage.
