The Deutz F2L1011F is a 4-cycle, 2-cylinder
air-cooled diesel engine from the Deutz FL1011 family. This engine
represents a significant design philosophy emphasizing simplicity,
durability, and independence from liquid cooling systems. Produced from
the late 1980s through the early 2000s, the F2L1011F found widespread
application in agricultural machinery, construction equipment, generator
sets, and industrial compressors.
The "F" designation indicates a standard industrial configuration, while
"L" denotes air cooling (Luftkühlung). Deutz's air-cooled design
eliminates the need for radiators, water pumps, hoses, and antifreeze,
making this engine suitable for extreme environments where liquid
cooling systems are vulnerable to freezing, boiling, or leakage.
The F2L1011F engine is recognized for its simplicity, cold-start
capability, and maintenance-friendly design. The air-cooled
configuration provides inherent freeze protection and reduces the number
of potential failure points compared to liquid-cooled equivalents. The
cast-iron crankcase and separate cylinder heads provide durability for
sustained industrial operation. The two-cylinder configuration, with one
inlet and one exhaust valve per cylinder, delivers torque suitable for
small tractors, skid steers, and portable equipment.
The forced-feed lubrication system with a rotary pump ensures consistent
oil delivery, while the paper-type microfilter captures contaminants
effectively. The mechanical centrifugal governor maintains engine speed
under varying loads without electronic controls. The direct injection
system, with individual injection pumps for each cylinder integrated
into the crankcase, simplifies fuel system service. The engine's compact
dimensions (407 mm length) permit installation in confined equipment
compartments.

The crankcase is constructed from grey cast iron, providing structural
rigidity and vibration damping. The crankcase is of a monobloc design
housing both cylinders in a single casting. The crankcase incorporates
the cylinder bores machined directly into the casting without separate
liners, finished with a honed surface for piston ring compatibility. The
crankcase features three main bearing webs supporting a nodular
cast-iron crankshaft with three main bearings.
The crankshaft is induction-hardened at the journal surfaces and
incorporates counterweights to control vibration inherent to the
two-cylinder configuration. The crankcase incorporates integrated oil
galleries supplying the main bearings, connecting rod bearings, and
camshaft bearings. A closed-circuit crankcase breather vents blow-by
gases back into the intake system, preventing atmospheric emissions. The
individual injection pumps for each cylinder are integrated directly
into the crankcase, driven by the camshaft.
The engine utilizes separate cast-iron cylinder heads for each cylinder,
a design that simplifies servicing and allows independent replacement.
Each cylinder head is a block-type casting housing the valve
arrangement. The overhead valve (OHV) configuration positions one intake
valve and one exhaust valve per cylinder, actuated by the camshaft
through pushrods and rocker arms. Intake valves measure 34.0 mm (1.34
in) in diameter, while exhaust valves measure 30.0 mm (1.18 in).
Valve seat inserts are replaceable. Valve clearance is adjusted by a
screw and locknut on each rocker arm. The cylinder head incorporates the
direct injection combustion chamber with a centrally positioned injector
nozzle. Each cylinder head is secured by four head bolts, requiring a
multi-step torque sequence in a crossing pattern. The cylinder head
gasket is a steel or composite type designed for air-cooled engine
thermal cycling.
The fuel system employs a mechanical direct injection architecture with
individual injection pumps for each cylinder. The pumps are integrated
into the crankcase, driven directly by the camshaft. This design
delivers precise fuel metering for each cylinder independently and
simplifies timing adjustments. A mechanical fuel lift pump, serviceable
with an integrated strainer, draws fuel from the tank and supplies it to
the injection pumps.
A mechanical centrifugal governor, integrated into the fuel system,
maintains engine speed under varying loads through a centrifugal weight
mechanism connected to the throttle lever. High-pressure injection lines
deliver fuel to five-hole injection nozzles mounted in each cylinder
head. Injector opening pressure is factory set between 220 and 240 bar
(3,190-3,480 psi). A spin-on primary fuel filter with water separator is
mounted externally.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed circulation type utilizing a
rotary oil pump mounted to the crankcase. The pump is driven by the
camshaft gear, ensuring immediate oil pressure upon startup. Oil is
drawn from the oil sump through a strainer before pressurization. A
paper-type microfilter with a replaceable cartridge serves as a
full-flow filter, mounted externally on the crankcase.
The system supplies lubricant to the crankshaft main bearings,
connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, injection pump components,
pushrods, rocker arms, and valve tips. The rotary oil pump incorporates
a pressure relief valve set between 3.0 and 4.0 bar (43-58 psi) at rated
speed. Integrated oil cooling is accomplished through fins on the
crankcase and an external oil cooler on higher-output variants. The oil
sump capacity supports extended operation with a dipstick on the side of
the crankcase indicating oil level.
The cooling system is an air-cooled design, eliminating the need for
radiators, water pumps, hoses, and coolant fluid. A centrifugal blower
fan, belt-driven from the crankshaft, draws cooling air through a duct
and directs it over the cylinder fins, cylinder head fins, and oil
cooler. The blower fan is shrouded to ensure even air distribution
across both cylinders.
The cylinder barrels and cylinder heads are manufactured with integral
cooling fins, machined to increase surface area for heat dissipation. A
thermostat-controlled flap regulates cooling air flow to maintain
operating temperature. An oil cooler, either air-cooled or liquid-cooled
depending on the variant, removes heat from the lubricating oil. The
air-cooling design provides freeze protection down to -40°C (-40°F)
without additives.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Intake System: Air is drawn through a dry-type paper element air filter
(single-stage or two-stage cyclone pre-cleaner in dusty environments)
before entering the intake manifold. The intake manifold is cast
separately and mounts to the cylinder heads.
Exhaust System: A cast-iron exhaust manifold collects gases from both
cylinders and directs them to a single outlet. A flexible bellows
section may be present to accommodate thermal expansion and vibration.
Timing System: The camshaft is driven by a gear train from the
crankshaft. Hardened steel timing gears at the front of the engine
provide fixed timing without belts or chains requiring replacement. The
gear train drives the camshaft, injection pumps, and oil pump. Timing
marks on each gear must align during assembly. No timing tensioner is
present due to the fixed gear arrangement.
Starting System: A 12-volt electric starter motor is mounted to the
flywheel housing, engaging a ring gear on the flywheel. A 12V/40A or
12V/55A alternator maintains battery charge. A manual starting crank may
be fitted for emergency starting on some industrial variants.
Governor: A mechanical centrifugal governor is integrated into the
injection pump system. The governor maintains engine speed by adjusting
the fuel rack position based on engine rpm relative to the throttle
setting. A speed droop of 5-10% is characteristic of mechanical governor
systems.
Crankcase Breather: A closed-circuit crankcase breather routes blow-by
gases through a labyrinth separator and back into the intake system. A
rubber hose connects the breather outlet to the air cleaner housing.
Overall Engine Length: 407 mm (16.02 in).
Overall Engine Width: 451 mm (17.76 in).
Overall Engine Height: 683 mm (26.89 in).
Shipping Weight with Packaging: 125 kg (276 lb).
Dry Weight: 110 kg (243 lb), inclusive of the flywheel, intake manifold,
exhaust manifold, starter motor, alternator, and blower housing.
Engine Oil Capacity (with Filter): 5.5-6.0 liters (5.8-6.3 U.S. qt,
4.8-5.3 imperial qt), varying with oil pan configuration and external
oil cooler presence. Engine Oil Specification: API CD, CE, CF, CF-4, or
CI-4 grade; SAE 15W-40 or SAE 10W-30 viscosity recommended. SAE 30
single-grade may be used in warm climates. For air-cooled diesel
engines, high-quality oil with thermal stability is required. Oil Change

shows vacuum exceeding 635 mm water gauge (25 in H2O) or at 250 hours
under dusty conditions. Valve Clearance (Cold): Intake: 0.20 mm (0.008
in); Exhaust: 0.25 mm (0.010 in). Adjustment is performed by loosening
the rocker arm locknut and turning the adjusting screw while holding the
appropriate feeler gauge. Valve Clearance Inspection Interval: 500
operating hours or annually.
Injector Inspection Interval: 1,000 operating hours for opening pressure
testing, spray pattern inspection, and flow testing. Injection Pump
Timing: Static timing set at 20-22 degrees before top dead center,
verified by aligning marks on the injection pump and crankcase or by
using a dial indicator. Fuel Injection Pressure: 220-240 bar
(3,190-3,480 psi, 224-245 kgf/cm2).
