The Deutz BF8M1015CP is a 15.9-liter,
turbocharged and charge-air-cooled, V-8 diesel engine from the Deutz
1015 family. This engine is designed for heavy-duty applications across
construction, industrial, mining, and marine sectors. The BF designation
indicates turbocharged operation with charge-air cooling, while CP
refers to a specific emissions and power rating configuration. The
engine features a grey cast iron crankcase with wet-type cylinder liners
and individual grey cast iron cylinder heads of crossflow design.
The valvetrain employs four-valve overhead technology, with two intake
and two exhaust valves per cylinder for a total of 32 valves across the
eight cylinders. The fuel system uses an in-line injection pump with a
mechanical centrifugal governor as standard, with an optional electronic
engine governor EMR-2 available for applications requiring more precise
control. Deutz produced this engine in multiple power ratings, with the
BF8M1015CP variant positioned as a high-output option meeting EU II and
EU III emission standards.
The Deutz BF8M1015CP is a four-cycle, water-cooled, 90-degree V-8 diesel
engine. The cylinder bore measures 132.0 mm (5.20 in), while the piston
stroke extends to 145.0 mm (5.71 in), producing an oversquare
configuration that favors power output at higher engine speeds. Total
displacement is 15,870 cc (15.9 L / 968 cu.in). The compression ratio is
16.5:1.
Maximum power output for automotive configurations is 440 kW (595 hp) at
2,100 rpm. Maximum torque reaches 2,720 Nm (2,007 lb-ft) at 1,300 rpm.
Low idle speed is set to 600-650 ± 50 rpm, with governed high idle
adjusting accordingly. The firing order for the 90-degree V-8
configuration is 1-6-3-5-2-4 when designated as an 8-cylinder engine in
line-type firing sequence references. The direction of rotation, viewed
from the flywheel, is counter-clockwise.
The cylinder block is constructed from grey cast iron, providing the
rigidity required for sustained V-8 operation under turbocharged and
intercooled conditions. The crankcase features replaceable wet-type
cylinder liners that contact the engine coolant directly, enhancing heat
dissipation from the combustion zone. A closed-circuit crankcase
breather system is integrated into the block design with vacuum control.
The oil gallery is configured to supply pressurized oil to all main
bearings and camshaft bearings through drilled passages. The water
jacket surrounds the cylinders and extends upward to the block deck. The
V-8 configuration positions the two cylinder banks at a 90-degree angle,
providing a compact overall width of 932-955 mm. The engine number is
stamped on a machined pad on the block.
Individual cylinder heads are manufactured from grey cast iron, with
each of the eight cylinders having its own separate head casting in a
crossflow design. This individual head configuration allows for easier
service and replacement compared to a single-piece head. The head
employs a four-valve overhead valve (OHV) configuration, with two intake
and two exhaust valves per cylinder, for a total of thirty-two valves
across the engine.
The overhead valve arrangement uses pushrods and rocker arms actuated by
a forged steel camshaft located within the cylinder block valley between
the two banks. Injection nozzles are centrally arranged in the cylinder
head, with eight-hole nozzle tips. Piston cooling is provided by oil
spray nozzles directed at the underside of each piston crown.
The fuel system employs direct injection with an in-line injection pump
mounted in the engine valley between the cylinder banks. A mechanical
centrifugal governor is standard equipment, maintaining stable engine
speed under varying loads. An optional electronic engine governor EMR-2
is available for applications requiring enhanced control precision and
integration with electronic device control and monitoring systems.
The fuel lift pump is a mechanical reciprocating pump. The fuel system
includes a primary filter with a water separator, with two replaceable
cartridge-type fuel filters. Injection nozzles are of the eight-hole
type, arranged centrally in the cylinder head to optimize combustion
efficiency. The robust mechanical injection system allows worldwide
operation even with high-sulfur fuels.
The lubrication system is a fully pressurized, wet-sump design using
forced-feed circulation lubrication with gear-type pumps. The oil pump
is located in the crankcase and driven by the crankshaft. Minimum oil
pressure at rated speed (1,500-2,100 rpm) with oil temperature at 90°C
is 3.0 bar (44 psi), while minimum oil pressure at idle speeds as low as
600 rpm under the same conditions is 1.0 bar (15 psi).
Normal operating oil temperature is below 130°C. An engine-integrated
oil cooler maintains oil temperature under sustained high-load
operation. The oil filter is a paper-type microfilter configured as a
replaceable-cartridge full-flow filter. Initial oil filling capacity is
48.0 L (50.7 U.S. qt). The oil pan is mounted on the flywheel side with
a permissible inclination angle of 22.5°. Recommended oil viscosity is
SAE 15W-40 meeting API CI-4 or higher diesel rating.
The cooling system is a pressurized, water-cooled design with a
belt-driven centrifugal water pump. Engine coolant capacity is 21.0 L
(22.2 U.S. qt). Water pump flow rate is 347 L/min (91.7 gal/min) at
rated speed, producing a water pump pressure of 1.25 bar (18 psi). Two
thermostats control coolant flow, with initial opening temperatures of
79°C and 87°C, and full opening temperatures of 94°C and 102°C
respectively.
Maximum allowable operating temperature is 103°C. The allowed pressure
loss in the cooling system including external piping is 0.35 bar.
Intercooler cooling power is 190 kW, with a charge air outlet
temperature of 219°C. Heat carried off by the coolant is up to 330 kW at
maximum power for certain configurations.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air Intake System: The air intake system is turbocharged with charge-air
cooling using two turbochargers. The turbochargers incorporate Holset
technology with integral wastegate valves for low-speed response and
strong power. Boost pressure is regulated through the charge-air cooler
(CAC) system. Maximum allowable air inlet resistance is 50 mbar.
Turbocharger inlet size is 150 mm, with an exhaust flange inner diameter
of 117 mm and connection bolts of 2-4 x M10.
Exhaust System: The exhaust system includes two turbochargers with a
maximum allowable exhaust backpressure of 50 mbar. Maximum exhaust gas
temperature is 630-650°C. The robust engine design allows worldwide
operation with high-sulfur fuels.
The electrical system operates at 24 volts. The starter motor is a
gear-reduction type with a power rating of 9.0 kW. The alternator is a
three-phase, brushless, internally regulated unit rated at 55 amperes at
28.5 V. Glow plugs with flame preheat capability are installed, allowing
cold starting without assistance down to -17°C ambient temperature and
with assistance down to -32°C.
The complete engine dry weight is 1,060 kg (2,337 lb). Overall engine
length ranges from 1,006 mm to 1,143 mm (39.6-45.0 in) depending on
configuration. Maximum width ranges from 920.5 mm to 932 mm (36.2-36.7
in). Height ranges from 1,152 mm to 1,175 mm (45.4-46.3 in). The
flywheel housing conforms to SAE No. 1 standard. The engine is mounted
with rigid bracing supports.
Engine oil and oil filter change intervals are recommended every 500
operating hours under normal conditions. Oil consumption rate is less
than 0.3 percent of fuel consumption. Fuel filter replacement occurs
every 500 hours. The air cleaner element is replaced when the
restriction indicator signals.
Coolant replacement is required every 2,000 hours or 24 months. Valve
lash inspection and adjustment are performed every 1,000 hours. The
injection timing is checked every 1,000 hours. Turbocharger bearing
clearance is checked every 1,500 hours. The wet cylinder liners are
