The Deutz BF6L914 is a 4-cycle inline
6-cylinder turbocharged air-cooled diesel engine, recognized as a
durable and versatile power unit for heavy-duty industrial and mobile
machinery. Belonging to the renowned 914 family, the "B" in the model
designation indicates turbocharging, while "F" stands for air-cooling.
This engine relies on an integrated axial-flow blower and individual
aluminium cylinder heads, eliminating complex liquid cooling systems
that are prone to leaks and freezing.
The BF6L914 features a direct injection fuel system with an in-line
injection pump governed by a mechanical centrifugal governor. Its design
prioritizes high reliability, low noise emissions, and excellent cold
starting performance, even under extreme conditions. The robust
construction allows for worldwide operation with various fuel qualities,
making it a common powerplant for wheel loaders, excavators, cranes, and
generator sets.
The Deutz BF6L914 is a four-stroke, compression-ignition diesel engine.
The inline 6-cylinder configuration provides inherent primary balance
without requiring balance shafts. The turbocharged aspiration system
increases air density and power output without increasing displacement.
Engine Type: 4-cycle inline 6-cylinder turbocharged air-cooled diesel
Number of Cylinders: 6
Displacement: 6.472 Liters (395 cu.in)
Bore x Stroke: 102 mm x 132 mm (4.01 in x 5.19 in)
Compression Ratio: 18.0:1
Aspiration: Turbocharged, air-cooled
Firing Order: 1-5-3-6-2-4
Rotation (viewed from flywheel): Counterclockwise
Rated Power: 148 hp (110 kW) at 2500 RPM
Maximum Torque: 550 Nm (405 lb-ft) at 1600 RPM
Idle Speed: 700 RPM
The crankcase is constructed from grey cast iron. Unlike conventional
engines, the 914 family uses an open-deck crankcase where the wet-type
cylinder liners are inserted into the block. These liners are
replaceable and contact the cooling air directly through fins. The
deep-skirt design provides high rigidity and reduces vibration.
Crankcase Material: Grey cast iron
Crankcase Design: Open-deck with replaceable wet liners
Crankshaft: Nodular cast iron with integrated counterweights
Connecting Rod: Drop-forged steel rod, diagonally split
Piston: Three-ring piston (two compression rings, one oil scraper ring)
Piston Cooling: Oil spray via nozzle directed at piston underside
A unique feature of the 914 engine family is the individual cylinder
head design. Each cylinder has its own separate aluminium head,
simplifying service and improving sealing under high thermal loads.
Overhead valves are arranged in the cylinder head, with one inlet and
one exhaust valve per cylinder actuated via pushrods and rocker arms.
Valves per Cylinder: 2 (1 inlet, 1 exhaust)
Valve Configuration: Overhead valve (OHV), pushrod-actuated
Cylinder Head Material: Aluminium single cylinder heads
Valve Adjustment Interval: Check and adjust every 1,000 operating hours
The BF6L914 uses a mechanical direct injection system. A high-pressure
in-line injection pump, installed on the blower side, delivers fuel to
five-hole injection nozzles. The system is controlled by a mechanical
centrifugal governor integrated into the injection pump.
Injection Pump Type: High Pressure in-line injection pump
Governor: Mechanical centrifugal governor
Injection Nozzle: Five-hole nozzle
Fuel Filter: Replaceable cartridge type
Fuel Lift Pump: Integrated mechanical pump
The engine utilizes a forced-feed circulation lubrication system. A
rotary pump supplies oil to all moving parts. An integrated aluminium
oil cooler maintains optimal oil temperature. On engines fitted with a
heating system, an oil cooler thermostat regulates the oil flow to the
cooler.
Lubrication Type: Forced-feed circulation with rotary pump
Engine oil cooler: Integrated aluminium cooler
Oil cooler thermostat: Active only on heating-equipped variants
Lube oil filter: Paper-type micro-filter as replaceable-cartridge full
flow filter
Oil Capacity (system): 14-20 Liters (15-21 U.S. quarts) depending on
filter configuration
Oil Change Interval: 500 hours (severe duty) / 1000 hours (light duty)
The BF6L914 is air-cooled. A belt-driven, integrated axial-flow blower
(cooling fan) forces cooling air across the finned cylinder barrels and
aluminium cylinder heads. This system eliminates the need for a
radiator, water pump, hoses, and coolant.
Type of cooling: Air-cooled with integrated axial-flow blower
Cooling Air Flow: Directed by sheet metal shrouds
Fan Drive: Belt-driven from the crankshaft
Turbocharging: The engine is equipped with an exhaust gas turbocharger
(non-wastegated in standard configuration) to increase power output
without increasing displacement.
Air Intake: Air enters through a replaceable dry-type air cleaner. The
intake manifold is positioned on the left side of the engine.
Electrical System: System Voltage: 12 V or 24 V depending on
application. Alternator: Three-phase alternator, 14 V, 55 A (standard 12
V configuration). Starter Motor: High-torque electric starter.
Electronic Control (Optional): An optional Electronic Motor Regulator
(EMR) is available, allowing integration into electronic equipment
control and monitoring systems.
Dry Weight (engine only): 420-485 kg (926-1,069 lbs).
Length (L x W x H): 1,045 mm x 713 mm x 920 mm (41.1 in x 28.1 in x 36.2
in).
Width: Appx. 680 mm (26.8 in) (basic engine).
Engine Oil and Filter Change: 500 hours (severe duty).
Engine Oil and Filter Change: 1000 hours (light duty).
Oil Filter (spin-on): Replace at every oil change.
Fuel Filter: Replace every 500 hours.
Air Cleaner Element: Inspect daily.
