The Deutz BF4M1013C is a four-cylinder,
turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine from the renowned German
manufacturer DEUTZ AG. Part of the high-performance 1013 series, this
4.76-liter power unit was engineered for heavy-duty applications
including construction machinery, agricultural equipment, and commercial
vehicles where reliability and compact power delivery are required. The
BF4M1013C designation follows Deutz’s naming convention: B indicates
turbocharged, F stands for intercooled (charge air cooling), M denotes
industrial engine, and 1013 represents the engine series.
The engine features a grey cast iron monobloc construction with
individual unit pumps for each cylinder, a mechanical centrifugal
governor as standard, and optional electronic engine management (EMR)
for more precise control. The design incorporates exchangeable cylinder
liners in the coolant flow path, simplifying overhaul procedures and
extending service life. The engine meets Euro II emission standards in
its standard configuration and can achieve Euro III compliance with
Deutz’s MV-System.
The BF4M1013C is a four-stroke, water-cooled diesel engine operating on
the compression-ignition principle. The engine architecture is an inline
four-cylinder configuration with a total displacement of 4.76 L (290
cu.in), derived from a bore of 108 mm (4.25 in) and a stroke of 130 mm
(5.12 in). This undersquare design promotes high torque generation at
low engine speeds, a characteristic essential for construction and
industrial applications where sustained pulling power is required. The
compression ratio is set at 17.5:1, a value that balances cold-start
capability with the combustion pressures generated by the turbocharged
induction system.
The rated power at the crankshaft is 115 kW (154 hp) at 2,300 rpm.
Maximum torque is 572 Nm (422 lb-ft) achieved at 1,400 rpm, providing
strong low-end pulling power. For industrial machinery applications, the
engine delivers 104 kW (139 hp) at 2,300 rpm with a mean effective
pressure of 11.39 bar. The mean piston speed is 9.97 m/s, and the idle
speed is set at 700 rpm.
The cylinder block is manufactured from grey cast iron with a monobloc
(one-piece) construction. The crankcase features a closed-deck design
with exchangeable cylinder liners integrated into the coolant flow path,
allowing for efficient heat dissipation and simplified overhaul
procedures. The cylinder bores are of the wet-type, replaceable design,
finished with a plateau honing process that optimizes oil retention and
piston ring sealing.
The crankcase is reinforced with webbing between cylinder bores to
minimize distortion under thermal and mechanical stress. The main
bearing caps are manufactured from nodular cast iron and secured with
bolts. The crankshaft incorporates integral counterweights for balanced
operation. The camshaft is manufactured from forged steel and driven by
the front gear train. A closed-circuit crankcase breather system
prevents emissions from escaping to the atmosphere.
The cylinder head is manufactured from grey cast iron in a block-type
configuration covering all four cylinders. The overhead valve (OHV)
arrangement positions the camshaft in the cylinder block, with valves
actuated via pushrods and rocker arms. Each cylinder utilizes two valves
- one intake and one exhaust - for a total of eight valves. This
two-valve-per-cylinder design provides reliability and simplicity suited
to industrial applications.
Valve clearance requires periodic mechanical adjustment. The cold valve
clearance is set at 0.2 mm (0.008 in) for both intake and exhaust
valves. The cylinder head gasket is a multi-layer steel (MLS) design.
The cylinder head incorporates the intake manifold mounting flange,
exhaust manifold mounting flange, and the fuel injector ports positioned
for the direct injection combustion system.
The BF4M1013C is equipped with a direct injection fuel system utilizing
individual unit pumps for each cylinder integrated into the crankcase.
This mechanical system comprises single injection pumps driven by an
additional camshaft lobe, delivering fuel at high pressure to six-hole
injection nozzles positioned centrally within each combustion chamber.
A mechanical centrifugal flyweight governor controls fuel delivery based
on engine speed and load as standard equipment, with an optional
electronic engine governor (EMR) featuring diagnostic capabilities and
CAN-Bus communication available.
The engine is equipped with a fuel lift pump integrated into the V-belt
tensioner assembly. A fuel filter assembly provides primary and
secondary filtration to protect the injection pump and injectors from
contamination. An electric stop solenoid controls fuel shutoff.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed circulation design utilizing a
gear-type pump. The oil pump draws lubricant from the sump through a
strainer and delivers it to the main oil gallery. The system includes an
oil cooler located on the engine to maintain oil viscosity under
high-load operation. A pressure regulating valve maintains stable oil
pressure within the system, calibrated to open at 4.5 bar to 5.0 bar (65
psi to 73 psi).
The engine employs a paper-type microfilter as a replaceable-cartridge
full-flow oil filter. The oil pan capacity is approximately 15 L (4.0 US
gal). The engine requires SAE 15W-40 diesel engine oil meeting API CF-4
or higher specification.
The cooling system is a liquid-cooled, thermostatically controlled
design utilizing a centrifugal water pump. The system circulates coolant
through the cylinder block, cylinder head, and charge air cooler to
maintain operating temperature. An air-to-air charge air cooler
(intercooler) reduces the temperature of compressed air from the
turbocharger before it enters the intake manifold.
The coolant circuit includes a thermostatic bypass that facilitates
rapid warm-up. The total coolant capacity for the engine and cooling
system is 10 L to 12 L (2.6 US gal to 3.2 US gal). The recommended
coolant mixture is a 50/50 glycol-water blend with appropriate corrosion
inhibitors for cast iron engines.
Air Intake and Turbocharging: The BF4M1013C is equipped with a
turbocharger that compresses intake air before it enters the cylinders,
with a charge air cooler (intercooler) reducing the temperature of
compressed air to increase density and combustion efficiency. The intake
system includes a heavy-duty paper element air cleaner. The engine is
designated F for intercooled configuration.
Engine Management: The standard BF4M1013C utilizes mechanical engine
controls with a mechanical centrifugal governor. An optional electronic
engine governor (EMR) is available, offering diagnostic capabilities and
CAN-Bus communication for integration with vehicle electronics.
Electrical System: The electrical system is 12V or 24V depending on the
application, with appropriately rated starter motor and alternator.
Exhaust System: The exhaust system incorporates a cast iron exhaust
manifold with provisions for turbocharger mounting. The engine meets
Euro II emission standards in standard configuration.
Mounting: Three separate mounting options are available for gear-driven
hydraulic pumps, providing flexibility for various construction
machinery applications.
The length dimensions range from 897 mm (35.3 in) to 920 mm (36.2 in).
The width is 760 mm (29.9 in) to 766 mm (30.2 in). The height is 790 mm
(31.1 in) to 800 mm (31.5 in). The dry weight is 432 kg (953 lb). The
fully dressed weight for a complete engine with all accessories is 500
kg to 650 kg (1,102 lb to 1,433 lb).
The service life of the BF4M1013C under proper operating conditions is
engineered to exceed 12,000 operating hours in industrial applications
before major overhaul. Oil change intervals are recommended at 500
operating hours for normal service conditions. The engine requires SAE
15W-40 diesel engine oil meeting API CF-4 or higher specification. Oil
Filter Replacement: At every oil change. Use a paper-type microfilter,
