The Deutz BF4M1012 is a 4-cylinder,
turbocharged diesel engine from the Deutz 1012 family. This engine is
part of a modular design series that includes 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6-cylinder
configurations, all sharing a common cylinder bore and piston stroke for
component interchangeability. The BF4M1012 is a 4-cycle inline engine
with liquid cooling, utilizing a monobloc construction where the
crankcase and cylinder block are cast as a single grey cast iron unit.
The engine features a direct injection fuel system with a separate
single injection pump for each cylinder, eliminating the need for a
common high-pressure pump. A closed-circuit crankcase breather system
routes blow-by gases back into the intake for reduced emissions. The
BF4M1012 variant is distinguished by its turbocharging, available in
multiple configurations including the BF4M1012C and BF4M1012EC, with
power outputs ranging from approximately 65 kW to 96.6 kW. Applications
span agricultural equipment, construction machinery, generator sets, and
marine vessels.

Maximum Power (Marine variants): Up to 71.5 kW (96.6 hp) at 2500 rpm.
Maximum Torque: 298 Nm (220 lb-ft) at 1500 rpm.
Aspiration: Turbocharged.
Combustion System: Direct injection.
The cylinder block and crankcase are constructed as a single monobloc
unit from high-grade grey cast iron. This design provides maximum
structural rigidity, reducing noise and vibration transmission during
operation. The crankcase incorporates a closed-circuit breather system,
which prevents crankcase vapors from venting directly to the atmosphere.
The cylinder bores are machined directly into the block, with no
replaceable wet or dry liners in the standard configuration.
The block includes an integrated oil gallery that supplies pressurized
lubricant to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rods, and camshaft
bearings. The oil pan is bolted to the lower face of the crankcase and
serves as the oil reservoir. A side mounting flange is provided for
attaching ancillary components including the fuel injection pump.
The cylinder head is manufactured from grey cast iron in a block-type
design, covering all four cylinders. The overhead valve (OHV)
arrangement uses a camshaft located within the cylinder block. Valve
actuation occurs through tappets, pushrods, and rocker arms. Each
cylinder receives two valves: one intake and one exhaust. This 2-valve
configuration provides a simple and durable valvetrain suitable for
continuous industrial operation.
Valve seats are manufactured from heat-resistant alloy steel. The
cylinder head contains the pre-combustion chamber, where the injected
fuel mixes with compressed air before combustion propagates into the
main cylinder. The cylinder head gasket is a multi-layer steel design
that seals the interface between the head and block.
The fuel system is a direct injection design using a separate single
injection pump for each cylinder. These individual pumps are integrated
into the crankcase housing and driven by a common camshaft. A mechanical
fuel lift pump, integrated with the V-belt tensioner, draws fuel from
the tank through a primary filter. The single injection pumps deliver
high-pressure fuel to the injection nozzles located in each cylinder
head.
Each nozzle is a five-hole type, providing multiple fuel jets for
efficient atomization and combustion. Engine speed is controlled by a
mechanical centrifugal governor (standard equipment) or by an optional
electronic engine governor (EMR) for more precise speed regulation. A
fuel filter with an integrated water separator is mounted between the
fuel tank and the lift pump. Fuel return lines route excess fuel back to
the tank.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed, pressurized circulation design
using a gear-type oil pump. The pump draws oil from the oil sump through
a suction strainer. Pressurized oil passes through a paper-type
microfilter configured as a replaceable-cartridge full-flow filter. From
the filter, oil enters the main oil gallery.
The gallery distributes oil to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting
rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and the turbocharger bearing housing.
An oil cooler is integrated into the system to maintain lubricant
temperature under continuous high-load operation. The total oil
capacity, including the filter, is 10.0-10.5 liters (10.6-11.1 qt). The
oil pan includes a drain plug.
The cooling system is a liquid-cooled, thermostatically controlled
design. A centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the cylinder
block, cylinder head, and oil cooler. A thermostat housed in a manifold
on the engine controls coolant flow, maintaining operating temperature
between 85-95°C (185-203°F).
A belt-driven cooling fan draws air through the radiator core. The
coolant system includes a degassing valve for bleeding air during
filling. The total coolant capacity is 20.0 liters (21.1 qt) for the
engine and radiator system. The coolant is an ethylene glycol-based
antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors, mixed with distilled water.
Intake System: Air enters through a dry-type air cleaner. The
turbocharger compressor draws filtered air, compresses it, and delivers
it to the intake manifold. An optional charge air cooler may be fitted
on certain high-output variants.
Exhaust System: The exhaust manifold collects gases from all four
cylinders. The turbocharger turbine is driven by these exhaust gases. A
water-cooled exhaust manifold is fitted on marine variants.
Turbocharging System: A single turbocharger provides forced induction.
The turbocharger is oil-lubricated from the engine's main lubrication
system. A closed crankcase breather routes blow-by gases from the valve
cover into the turbocharger intake or air cleaner.
Electrical System: The engine is equipped with an electric starting
system (24V DC for many industrial applications, 12V for some variants).
An alternator provides charging capacity. Glow plugs assist cold
starting.
Governor: A mechanical centrifugal governor is standard, mounted on the
fuel injection pump. An optional electronic engine governor (EMR)
provides more precise speed control, improved load acceptance, and
integration with electronic monitoring systems.
