The Deutz BF4M1011 is a 4-cycle, inline
four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine from the Deutz 1011 series, a
family of compact, liquid-cooled industrial engines. Designed for
off-highway applications requiring moderate power output within a small
footprint, the BF4M1011 produces 56-61 kW (75-82 hp) at 2,800 rpm from a
displacement of 2.91 L. The engine is recognized for its compact
dimensions - measuring only 630 mm in length and 450 mm in width -
making it suitable for installation in space-constrained engine
compartments.
The engine’s architecture centers on an inline four-cylinder
configuration with a bore of 91 mm and a long stroke of 112 mm, favoring
low-end torque generation for industrial and agricultural loads. The
turbocharger increases charge density, resulting in a peak torque of 203
Nm (150 lb-ft) at only 1,800 rpm. This broad torque plateau provides
lugging capability under varying loads without continuous downshifting.
The BF4M1011 is commonly installed in compact wheel loaders,
telehandlers, skid steer loaders, small combine harvesters, and
generator sets.
Engine Type: Vertical inline 4-cylinder, 4-cycle, turbocharged,
liquid-cooled diesel.

Stroke: 112.0 mm (4.41 in).
Compression Ratio: 17.0:1.
Combustion System: Direct injection.

Rated Power Output: 56-61 kW (75-82 hp) @ 2,800 rpm.
Maximum Torque Output: 203 Nm (150 lb-ft) @ 1,800 rpm.

The cylinder block is manufactured from high-grade gray cast iron as a
monobloc construction, integrating the cylinders and upper crankcase
into a single casting. This design provides structural rigidity and
maintains main bearing alignment under the cylinder pressures generated
by turbocharged operation. The block incorporates cast-in-place cylinder
bores machined directly into the casting. No separate replaceable liners
are used.
Bore diameter measures 91.0 mm (3.58 in) with a piston stroke of 112.0
mm (4.41 in), yielding a total displacement of 2.91 L (177.5 cu.in).
This under-square bore-to-stroke ratio of 0.812 strongly favors low-end
torque generation and thermal efficiency, aligning with the engine’s
industrial and agricultural applications where sustained operation at
moderate speeds is required.
The crankshaft is forged from high-carbon steel. Five main bearings
support the crankshaft. Thrust washers positioned at the center main
bearing control axial crankshaft play. Connecting rods are forged from
high-carbon steel with an I-beam cross-section. Pistons are cast
aluminum featuring a three-ring pack: two compression rings and one oil
control ring. The piston crown incorporates a combustion bowl designed
for the direct injection fuel system.
The cylinder head is manufactured from gray cast iron as a block-type
cylinder head, meaning a single casting spans all four cylinders. This
design eliminates sealing joints between adjacent cylinders.
Valve arrangement consists of one intake valve and one exhaust valve per
cylinder, for a total of eight valves across the engine. This
two-valve-per-cylinder configuration reduces valvetrain complexity and
component count, contributing to mechanical reliability in sustained
industrial operation. Intake valve diameter measures 42.0 mm (1.65 in),
while exhaust valve diameter measures 38.0 mm (1.50 in). Valve stem
diameter is 8.0 mm (0.31 in) for both intake and exhaust.
The valvetrain utilizes an overhead valve (OHV) configuration with
pushrods and rocker arms. The camshaft is located within the cylinder
block and is driven by gears from the crankshaft. Valve clearance
adjustment is accomplished via threaded adjusters with locknuts at the
rocker arm.
The BF4M1011 employs a direct injection fuel system with an inline
injection pump. The injection pump is a plunger-type unit with
individual plunger-and-barrel assemblies for each cylinder, mounted to
the side of the cylinder block and driven by the camshaft gear train.
The pump incorporates a mechanical centrifugal governor that maintains
engine speed under varying loads.
Injection timing is adjustable by rotating the injection pump relative
to its drive gear. Fuel injectors are of the multi-hole type. Nozzle
opening pressure is set to 230-240 bar (3,335-3,480 psi). Injectors are
installed into the cylinder head with a copper sealing washer. The fuel
system incorporates a primary fuel filter with water separator and a
secondary cartridge-type filter.
The lubrication system utilizes a forced-feed circulation design with a
gear-type oil pump. A pressure relief valve integrated into the pump
maintains system pressure within design parameters.
Total oil capacity is 10.5 L (11.0 qt) including filter. Recommended oil
viscosity is SAE 10W-40 or 15W-40 meeting API CI-4 or higher
specifications. Oil pressure specifications require a minimum of 1.0 bar
(15 psi) at warm idle and 3.0-4.0 bar (44-58 psi) at rated speed. The
oil filter is a spin-on, full-flow type mounted to the cylinder block.
The cooling system is liquid-cooled with thermostatic control. A
centrifugal water pump, driven by the accessory drive belt, circulates
coolant through the cylinder block and cylinder head. The thermostat is
a wax-pellet unit with an opening temperature of 82-86 °C (180-187 °F).
Total coolant capacity is 8.0 L (8.5 qt) for the engine only, exclusive
of radiator capacity. The radiator is sized to the specific application.
A charge air intercooler is not fitted on standard BF4M1011
configurations.
