The Mitsubishi D04FD-TAA is a compact,
high-performance diesel engine designed for robust duty in construction
machinery. This powerplant is engineered to deliver a balance of power,
fuel efficiency, and durability under demanding operating conditions. As
a 4.249-liter, four-cylinder, turbocharged and aftercooled (TAA) diesel
engine with a high-pressure common rail fuel system, it provides
responsive power and torque characteristics essential for hydraulic
excavator operation.
The integration of electronic control ensures precise fuel management,
contributing to lower emissions and consistent performance. Key
operational features include an automatic engine overheat prevention
system, which reduces engine speed when coolant temperature exceeds a
set threshold, and an anti-restart function that prevents accidental
engine starting while it is in a post-operation cooldown cycle. The
engine’s design prioritizes serviceability and reliability in dusty,
high-vibration environments.

The cylinder block is a single, rigid casting from high-strength gray
iron. It features a deep-skirt design for enhanced stiffness and reduced
vibration. Cylinder bores are precision-honed and incorporate
replaceable, dry-type cylinder liners made from wear-resistant cast
iron. The crankshaft is a forged steel component with five main bearing
journals for robust support. It is induction-hardened for superior
fatigue strength.
Connecting rods are forged steel I-beam sections, fitted with
replaceable precision bearing shells at both the crankshaft and piston
pin ends. Pistons are aluminum alloy with a combustion bowl design
optimized for direct injection. They are equipped with three rings: two
chrome-plated compression rings and one oil control ring. Piston pins
are full-floating and retained by circlips.
The cylinder head is a single-piece cast iron component with crossflow
porting. It mounts one intake and one exhaust valve per cylinder. Valves
are made of heat-resistant steel and feature sodium-filled stems for
improved heat dissipation on exhaust models. Valve seats are
induction-hardened for wear resistance.
The valve train employs a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) driven by a
gear train. Rocker arms are shaft-mounted, actuating the valves via
direct mechanical force. Adjustable screws and locknuts on the rocker
arms provide for manual valve clearance adjustment. The camshaft is
supported by multiple journals within the cylinder head.
The engine employs a high-pressure common rail fuel injection system,
managed electronically. System components include a gear-driven supply
pump, a high-pressure fuel rail, solenoid-operated injectors, and an
Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The supply pump generates fuel pressure
independent of engine speed. Fuel is stored under constant high pressure
(up to 1600 bar / 23,200 psi) in the common rail and distributed to each
injector.
The ECU precisely controls injection timing, duration, and pressure
based on sensor inputs, enabling multiple injection events per cycle for
optimized combustion, power, and noise reduction. A hand-operated primer
pump is integrated for system bleeding. The system mandates the use of
clean, low-sulfur diesel fuel.
The lubrication system is a forced-feed, full-flow type with a gear-type
oil pump driven from the crankshaft. Oil is drawn from the sump through
a strainer, pressurized by the pump, and passed through a full-flow,
spin-on type oil filter. The filtered oil is directed to the main oil
gallery, supplying the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod
bearings, camshaft bearings, and valve train.
A piston cooling jet is provided for each cylinder to squirt oil onto
the underside of the piston. Oil pressure is monitored by a sensor. The
specified engine oil is API CF-4 grade or superior. The total oil
capacity, including the filter, is 13.5 liters (14.3 US qt). The oil pan
is a stamped steel design.
The engine uses a pressurized, forced-circulation liquid cooling system
with a centrifugal water pump. Coolant circulation is controlled by a
wax-element type thermostat. Engine heat is rejected via a tube-and-fin
type radiator equipped with a suction fan. The system incorporates a
separate circuit for the air-to-air aftercooler (ATAAC), which lowers
the temperature of intake air after turbocharging to increase charge
density.
The coolant is a 50/50 mixture of ethylene-glycol antifreeze and
deionized water. The cooling system capacity is 18 liters (19 US qt).
The automatic overheat prevention system is integrated into the ECU,
which will derate engine power if the coolant temperature exceeds 106°C
(223°F).
Intake System: Comprises a dry-type air cleaner, turbocharger, intake
manifold, and air-to-air aftercooler (ATAAC). The turbocharger is a
wastegate-controlled unit for optimized boost pressure across the
operating range.
Exhaust System: Features an exhaust manifold integrated with the
turbocharger turbine housing. Exhaust gas is routed through a flexible
pipe to the machine’s exhaust after-treatment and silencer.
Electrical System: Operates on a 12V system. A 12V, 35A or larger
alternator charges the battery. The starting motor is a 12V, 4.5 kW
unit. Sensors for coolant temperature, oil pressure, boost pressure,
crankshaft position, and camshaft position provide data to the ECU.
