The cylinder block is a single-piece, high-strength gray iron casting.
Its design employs a deep-skirt configuration that extends below the
crankshaft centerline, providing substantial bending and torsional
rigidity. This structure minimizes noise, vibration, and harshness while
ensuring precise alignment of rotating components. The block
incorporates replaceable, press-fit wet-type cylinder sleeves.
These sleeves are constructed from centrifugally cast alloy iron,
offering high wear resistance and direct heat transfer to the coolant
jacket. The crankshaft is supported by six main bearings with
steel-backed, aluminum alloy bearing inserts. Main bearing caps are
ductile iron and are secured with two vertical bolts each. The block
features an integrated front gear train housing and internal galleries
for oil and coolant distribution.
The cylinder head is a single-piece, cast aluminum alloy component. This
material selection reduces overall engine weight while maintaining
structural integrity under thermal and mechanical loads. The head
employs a crossflow, four-valve-per-cylinder design (two intake, two
exhaust). This configuration optimizes airflow for efficient combustion
and power output.
Valve seats are induction-hardened inserts, and valve guides are
replaceable. Intake and exhaust valves are manufactured from
heat-resistant steel alloys. Valve actuation uses individual roller-type
rocker arms mounted on a single shaft. The camshaft, located in the
cylinder block, operates the valves via hydraulic lifters, eliminating
the need for periodic valve lash adjustment. A multilayer steel head
gasket seals the combustion chambers and fluid passages.
The fuel system is an electronically controlled, unit pump direct
injection system. A camshaft-driven, gear-type transfer pump supplies
fuel from the tank to a primary filter/water separator and a secondary
fuel filter. The system's core comprises five individual electronic unit
pumps (EUPs), each mounted in the cylinder block and actuated by a
dedicated lobe on the camshaft.
Each EUP incorporates a high-pressure solenoid valve controlled by the
Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU determines precise injection timing
and duration based on sensor inputs (crankshaft position, camshaft
position, coolant temperature, boost pressure). High-pressure steel
lines connect each EUP to its corresponding injector. The injectors are
pencil-type, multi-hole units. Fuel shutoff is managed entirely by the
ECU.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure, gear-driven design. A tandem
gear-type pump, driven from the front gear train, provides oil flow. The
pump assembly incorporates separate sections for engine pressure
lubrication and hydraulic oil supply for equipment, if configured. For
engine lubrication, oil is drawn from the oil pan through a pickup tube
and screen. Pressurized oil is forced through a full-flow, spin-on oil
filter.
Filtered oil is distributed through main galleries to the crankshaft
main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, and the valve
rocker shaft. A piston cooling jet sprays oil onto the underside of each
piston crown. The turbocharger center bearing receives oil via a
dedicated feed line. A pressure relief valve maintains system pressure.
Total engine oil system capacity is 9.5 liters (10.0 U.S. quarts) with
filter. Oil meeting John Deere performance standard JDM J27 or API
CH-4/CG-4 is required.
The cooling system is a pressurized, liquid-cooled design. A centrifugal
water pump, gear-driven from the front of the engine, circulates
coolant. Coolant flow is directed first through the cylinder block, then
into the cylinder head, and through the oil cooler and aftercooler core
before returning to the radiator. A wax-pellet-type thermostat regulates
coolant temperature.
System pressure is maintained by a radiator pressure cap, commonly rated
for 100 kPa (15 psi). A belt-driven or hydraulic fan provides airflow
across the radiator and aftercooler. The system includes a coolant degas
bottle for air separation and level maintenance. Total coolant capacity
is 13.5 liters (14.3 U.S. quarts). A 50/50 mixture of ethylene-glycol
antifreeze meeting John Deere specification JDM J71C and water is
required.
Air Management System: The system includes a wastegated turbocharger and
an air-to-air aftercooler. The aftercooler reduces the temperature of
the compressed intake air, increasing its density for greater combustion
efficiency and power.
Electrical and Electronic System: The engine is managed by a dedicated
Engine Control Unit (ECU). Sensors monitor crankshaft position, camshaft
position, coolant temperature, oil pressure, intake manifold pressure
and temperature, and fuel rail pressure. The system includes a 12 Volt
electric starting motor and a 12 Volt, 65 Amp or greater alternator. An
intake air heater grid assists in cold-weather starting.
Exhaust System: Exhaust gases drive the turbocharger turbine before
exiting through a manifold and exhaust piping. The engine does not
incorporate exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) for Tier 2 compliance.
Flywheel and Housing: A SAE standard flywheel housing is used. The
flywheel is a machined cast iron or steel component,
application-specific.
Overall Length (Front of damper to flywheel housing face): 780 mm (30.7
inches)
Overall Width (Maximum at valve cover/intake manifold): 720 mm (28.3
inches).
Overall Height (Top of valve cover to oil pan rail): 850 mm (33.5
inches).
Dry Weight (Base engine, less coolant and oil, standard accessories):
287 kg (633 lbs).
Engine Oil Change Interval: 500 service hours or annually, whichever
occurs first. Severe service conditions mandate 250-hour intervals. Oil
Filter Change: Replace with every oil change. Fuel Filter Service: Drain
water from primary separator daily; replace primary filter cartridge
every 500 hours and secondary filter every 1000 service hours.
Air Filter Element Service: Replace element based on restriction gauge
indication; inspect housing and element every 250 service hours. Coolant
Change Interval: 3000 service hours or 3 years.
Valve Lash Adjustment: Hydraulic lifters render periodic adjustment
unnecessary under normal operating conditions. Fuel Injection System
Service: Diagnostic and calibration procedures require specialized
electronic service tools (John Deere Service ADVISOR or equivalent).
Aftercooler Core Service: Inspect and clean the external fins of the
aftercooler core every 1000 service hours to maintain cooling
efficiency. Fan Drive Belt Tension: Adjust to provide 10 to 13 mm (0.4
to 0.5 inches) of deflection under moderate thumb pressure at the belt's
longest span.
Cylinder Head Bolts: Torque in specified sequence to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft),
then to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft), final angle tighten + 90 deg.
Main Bearing Cap Bolts: 140 Nm (103 lb-ft) plus an additional 60-degree
angle tighten.
Connecting Rod Cap Bolts: 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) plus an additional 60-degree
angle tighten.
Flywheel to Crankshaft Bolts: 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
Rocker Arm Shaft Support Bolts: 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).
Fuel Injection Line Nuts (at unit pump and injector): 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
Oil Pan Bolts: 24 Nm (18 lb-ft).
Turbocharger Mounting Nuts: 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
