The International D206 is a durable
four-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine developed by International
Harvester for light industrial and agricultural applications. This
inline, naturally aspirated engine provides dependable power
characterized by strong low-speed torque. Its design emphasizes
serviceability and longevity under sustained load conditions.
A key feature is its balance of displacement and physical size, making
it suitable for compact tractor chassis. The engine employs a direct
injection fuel system for enhanced fuel efficiency and reliable
cold-weather starting. Its reputation is built on rugged simplicity and
ease of maintenance.

The cylinder block is a rigid one-piece casting of high-strength gray
iron. It uses a deep-skirt design that extends below the crankshaft
centerline, contributing to structural integrity and reduced vibration.
Cylinder bores are integral to the block casting.
The crankshaft is supported by five main bearings. Main bearing caps are
made from forged steel or nodular iron and are secured with two vertical
bolts per cap. The block incorporates a full-length water jacket for
uniform cooling. The front engine cover integrates the timing gear
housing.
The cylinder head is a single-piece cast iron component servicing all
four cylinders. It uses a crossflow design with the intake manifold on
one side and the exhaust manifold on the opposite side. Valves are
vertically positioned and operated via pushrods and rocker arms.
Valve Arrangement: Overhead valves (OHV).
Valves per Cylinder: Two (one intake, one exhaust).
Intake Valve Head Diameter: 1.69 inches (43.0 mm).
Exhaust Valve Head Diameter: 1.38 inches (35.0 mm).
Valve Seat Angle: 45 deg.
Valve Stem Diameter: 0.3125 inches (7.94 mm).
Valve Lash (cold): Intake 0.015 inches (0.38 mm), Exhaust 0.017 inches
(0.43 mm).
Adjustment is performed with the engine cold.
The fuel system is a full diesel direct injection setup.
Injection Pump: An International Harvester-built rotary distributor-type
pump (Robert Bosch license), mechanically governed.
Specific models may use a CAV or Simms pump.
Injection Nozzles: Multi-hole pintle nozzles.
Injection Pressure: 1710 to 1990 psi (118 to 137 bar).
Fuel Lift Pump: A camshaft-driven, diaphragm-type mechanical transfer
pump.
Fuel Filter: A single or dual-stage spin-on or cartridge-type filter.
Static Injection Timing: Must be set precisely per engine specification.
Common setting range is 16 to 20 deg before top dead center.
Exact setting is critical and varies by pump model.
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed, full-flow design.
Oil Pump: Gear-type, located in the engine oil pan and driven by the
camshaft.
Oil Capacity: 8 quarts (7.6 liters) including filter.
Oil Filter: Full-flow, spin-on type cartridge.
Oil Pressure (operating): 40 to 60 psi at rated speed (2.8 to 4.1 bar).
Minimum idle pressure is 10 psi (0.7 bar).
Pressure Relief Valve: Located within the oil pump assembly.
Oil Cooler: Not standard on base agricultural applications.
The cooling system is a pressurized, pump-circulated system with
thermostat control.
Water Pump: Centrifugal type, belt-driven from the crankshaft pulley.
Thermostat: Wax-pellet type, begins to open at 180 F (82 C).
Full open temperature is 195 F (91 C).
Radiator Pressure Cap: 7 psi pressure cap (0.48 bar).
Coolant Capacity: 16 quarts (15.1 liters).
Coolant Recommendation: A 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze
and clean, soft water.
Electrical System: 12-volt negative ground.
Starting Motor: 12-volt, solenoid-actuated, high-torque gear reduction
type.
Charging Alternator: 12-volt, 40 to 65 ampere output, belt-driven.
Battery Recommendation: Group 4D or equivalent, minimum 650 cold
cranking amps.
Air Intake System: Dry-type, replaceable paper element air cleaner,
often with a pre-cleaner.
Intake Manifold: Cast iron.
Exhaust Manifold: Cast iron.
Length (front of damper to rear of flywheel housing): 32 inches (813
mm).
Width (over valve cover): 24 inches (610 mm).
Height (top of valve cover to base of oil pan): 28 inches (711 mm).
Weight (dry, as described): 670 lbs (304 kg).
Engine Oil Grade: Use a high-quality diesel engine oil meeting API
service classification CD or superior. SAE 15W-40 is appropriate for
general use across a range of ambient temperatures. Oil Change Interval:
Under normal agricultural service, change engine oil and filter every
150 operating hours or 6 months, whichever occurs first. For severe
service (continuous heavy load, dust), reduce interval to 100 hours. Oil
Filter Change: Replace the spin-on filter with every oil change.
Fuel Filter Change: Replace the primary and secondary fuel filter
elements every 500 operating hours. Drain any water from the filter bowl
daily or weekly as conditions require. Coolant Change: Drain, flush, and
refill the cooling system every 2000 operating hours or 24 months.
Inspect coolant condition and freeze protection level seasonally. Air
Filter Service: Inspect the primary air filter element every 100 hours
of operation. Replace the element when dirty or every 1000 hours.
Clean the pre-cleaner cup daily in dusty conditions. Valve Lash
Adjustment: Check and adjust valve clearance every 1000 operating hours
or annually. Injection Timing Check: Verify static injection timing
every 2000 operating hours or after any fuel system component
replacement.
Cylinder Head Bolts: Torque in the specified sequence to a final value
of 100 to 110 lb-ft (136 to 149 Nm). Main Bearing Cap Bolts: 85 to 90
lb-ft (115 to 122 Nm).
Connecting Rod Cap Nuts: 48 to 52 lb-ft (65 to 71 Nm). Always install
new cotter pins after torquing.
Flywheel to Crankshaft Bolts: 80 to 85 lb-ft (108 to 115 Nm).
Injector Nozzle Holder (in head): 55 to 60 lb-ft (75 to 81 Nm).
Oil Pan Drain Plug: 25 to 30 lb-ft (34 to 41 Nm).
The International D206 engine found its primary application in
International Harvester's agricultural tractor line. It is the defining
powerplant for the International 584 utility tractor. Furthermore, this
engine was utilized in other IH models, including the 74, 84, 85, 95,
and 384/385 tractors.
Beyond agricultural tractors, the D206 served as a power source in some
industrial equipment such as light construction machinery, generator
sets, and irrigation pumps. Specific model fitment should always be
verified using the engine serial number and original equipment
manufacturer documentation.
