The Isuzu 4LE2X is an advanced industrial
diesel engine derived from the proven 4LE-series architecture and
enhanced for greater efficiency, improved emissions performance, and
longer operating life. Designed for compact construction machinery,
material-handling equipment, generators, pumps, and industrial power
units, the 4LE2X emphasizes rugged durability, smooth power delivery,
and minimal downtime.
It inherits the robust cast-iron block and head of earlier LE-series
engines while integrating refined airflow characteristics, upgraded fuel
injection control, reinforced rotating components, and enhanced thermal
stability. The engine is known for strong low-speed torque, fuel
economy, and ease of service.
The Isuzu 4LE2X is a four-cylinder, inline, four-stroke, water-cooled
diesel engine equipped with a high-efficiency turbocharger depending on
application variant. Total displacement is approximately 2,179 cc (132.9
cubic inches). Bore is 85 mm (3.35 inches) and stroke is 96 mm (3.78
inches), creating an undersquare configuration optimized for strong
torque output. Compression ratio generally ranges from 18.0:1 to 19.5:1
depending on emissions package. Firing order is 1-3-4-2, providing
balanced firing impulses and minimizing vibration.
Power output depends on equipment calibration, typically ranging between
45 and 68 horsepower (33 to 51 kW) at 2600 to 3000 rpm. Torque is
commonly 150 to 185 newton-meters (111 to 136 lb-ft) at approximately
1600 to 1800 rpm. Idle speed is usually 750 rpm. Maximum governed speed
is dependent on industrial configuration.
The cast-iron block incorporates deep external ribbing for heat
stability and structural strength. Five main bearings support a forged
steel crankshaft designed for high durability under constant-load
operation. Pistons are aluminum alloy, reinforced for high compression
and shaped with optimized combustion bowls.
Piston rings include two compression rings and
one oil control ring. The camshaft is block-mounted and driven by a gear
train. The valvetrain uses pushrods and rocker arms with manually
adjustable lash settings. Intake and exhaust ports are optimized to
improve airflow, swirl characteristics, and charge efficiency.
The 4LE2X uses a direct-injection fuel system. Depending on emissions
tier and market, it may use a mechanically governed inline pump, a
rotary high-pressure pump, or an electronically controlled metering
system. Fuel delivery path begins at a mechanical lift pump that draws
fuel from the tank.
Fuel passes through a sediment and water separator, then through a
fine-element secondary filter. The high-pressure pump meters fuel to
each injector. Multi-hole injectors atomize diesel fuel directly into
the piston bowl. Injection pressures range from 180 to 300 bar depending
on configuration. Timing is set mechanically or by ECU-controlled
reference in electronic variants.
Fuel system service intervals include filter replacement every 10,000 to
15,000 km (6,200 to 9,300 miles). Injectors are serviced every 40,000 to
60,000 km (25,000 to 37,000 miles). Water separator should be drained
routinely. Injection pump timing is checked during major service.
Minimum recommended cetane number is 45.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design. A gear-driven
oil pump draws oil from the sump through a pickup strainer and sends it
through a full-flow spin-on filter. Pressurized oil feeds crankshaft
main bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, pushrod
passages, and rocker assemblies. Turbocharger bearings receive a
dedicated supply line.
Oil capacity is around 5.5 to 6.0 liters (5.8 to 6.3 US quarts).
Operating pressure typically ranges from 300 to 450 kPa (44 to 65 psi)
at rated speed and 80 to 120 kPa (12 to 17 psi) at idle. Recommended
viscosity is SAE 15W-40 diesel oil meeting API CF or higher. Oil change
intervals are generally 5,000 to 7,500 km (3,000 to 4,600 miles) or 250
to 300 operating hours.
Cooling is provided by a closed-loop, forced-circulation liquid cooling
system. A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through
block, head, and radiator. Thermostat begins opening at about 82 C (180
F) and is fully open at about 95 C (203 F).
System pressure is controlled by a radiator cap rated at approximately
70 to 90 kPa (10 to 13 psi). Coolant capacity is 7 to 9 liters (7.4 to
9.5 US quarts). A 50/50 ethylene glycol mix is recommended. Replacement
interval is every 30,000 km or two years. Industrial variants may
include large radiators or remote-mounted cooling.
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Air intake uses a dry-element filter or, in dusty environments, a
cyclone pre-cleaner. Turbocharged versions use a wastegated turbocharger
sized for low-rpm torque and stable boost curve. Intake runners are
tuned for balanced airflow distribution. Exhaust manifold is cast iron.
Some versions include spark arrestors, industrial mufflers, or vertical
stacks.
| Electrical and Starting Systems |
Electrical system varies by application: 12-volt for compact machines or
24-volt for industrial equipment. Alternators range from 35 to 60
amperes. Starter motors are between 1.8 and 2.5 kW. Glow plugs or intake
heaters assist cold starts. Wiring is reinforced for vibration and
environmental resistance.
The 4LE2X may include hydraulic pump drives, vacuum pumps, power
steering pumps, AC compressors, or PTO systems depending on
installation. Crankcase ventilation may be open or semi-closed. Optional
oil coolers are used in heavy-duty configurations.
Standard engine dimensions: length 650 to 690 mm (25.6 to 27.2 in),
width 580 to 620 mm (22.8 to 24.4 in), height 720 to 760 mm (28.3 to
29.9 in). Dry weight is 190 to 230 kg (419 to 507 lb).
Maintenance schedule includes oil and filter every 5,000 to 7,500 km,
fuel filter at 10,000 to 15,000 km, air filter at 8,000 to 12,000 km,
coolant every two years, valve lash every 1,000 hours, injector service
at 40,000 to 60,000 km, turbo inspection at 60,000 to 80,000 km, and
compression testing at 100,000 km.
Cylinder head bolts: 100 to 120 Nm (74 to 89 lb-ft)
Main bearing caps: 95 to 115 Nm (70 to 85 lb-ft)
Connecting rod bolts: 55 to 65 Nm (41 to 48 lb-ft)
