The Isuzu 4LE2 engine is a compact, modern,
fuel-efficient, and highly durable four-cylinder diesel engine designed
for industrial machinery, construction equipment, agricultural
machinery, forklifts, generator sets, and small utility vehicles. As a
successor to the earlier 4LE1, the 4LE2 introduced improved combustion
efficiency, reduced emissions, quieter operation, and enhanced low-speed
torque. It belongs to Isuzu’s LE-series, a family of small displacement
engines known worldwide for exceptional reliability, long service life,
and compatibility with modern industrial platforms.
The 4LE2 is widely used in excavators, skid-steer loaders, aerial lifts,
generators, compressors, agricultural tractors, and compact construction
units. Many OEMs—including Hitachi, Case, Cummins-branded gensets, and
various forklift manufacturers—use the 4LE2 due to its durability, ease
of maintenance, and strong performance in continuous-duty environments.
The Isuzu 4LE2 is a four-stroke, inline four, water-cooled,
direct-injection diesel engine. Total displacement is approximately 2.2
liters (133 cu.in). Bore is 85.0 mm or 3.35 inches. Stroke is 96.0 mm or
3.78 inches. This long-stroke configuration results in excellent torque
at low and mid rpm, making the engine ideal for work cycles requiring
strong pulling power at moderate speeds.
Compression ratio varies slightly depending on emissions calibration,
typically between 18.0:1 and 18.5:1. Power output ranges from 45 to 60
horsepower at approximately 2600 to 3000 rpm, depending on application
and emissions package. Torque output is generally between 120 and 150 Nm
or 88 to 111 lb-ft at 1600 to 1800 rpm. Idle speed ranges from 750 to
850 rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Crankshaft rotation is clockwise
when viewed from the front.
The crankshaft is forged steel with four main bearings. Pistons are cast
aluminum alloy with reinforced ring grooves. Connecting rods are forged
steel. The block is cast iron with strong lower support for stable
operation under continuous load. The cylinder head is cast iron with
swirl-enhanced direct-injection combustion chambers. The camshaft is
block-mounted and gear-driven, operating valves via pushrods and rocker
arms.
The 4LE2 uses a mechanical direct-injection fuel system or an
electronically controlled mechanical pump depending on model year and
emissions requirements. A mechanical lift pump draws fuel from the tank
and supplies it to a primary water separator or sediment bowl. Fuel then
passes through a fine paper-element filter before entering the injection
pump.
Fuel injection system components:
- Mechanical lift pump
- Primary water separator
- Secondary fuel filter
- Inline mechanical or mechanically-governed electronic injection pump
- High-pressure injection lines
- Multi-hole direct-injection nozzles
Fuel injection pressure typically ranges from 140 to 180 Mpa. The
injection pump meters fuel volume and controls timing. Excess fuel
returns to the tank through a return circuit. Cold starting is supported
by an intake heater or glow plugs depending on configuration.
Fuel system maintenance:
- Fuel filter: every 15,000 to 20,000 km
- Water separator: drain at every service
- Injector service: every 60,000 to 80,000 km
- Injection pump calibration: every 120,000 km or major overhaul
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet sump design. A gear-driven
trochoid oil pump draws oil through a screened pickup and delivers it
through a full-flow spin-on filter. Lubrication is provided to all major
bearings, valvetrain components, timing gears, and piston cooling jets
in some versions.
Lubrication specifications:
- Oil capacity: 5.0 to 5.5 liters or 5.3 to 5.8 US quarts
- Operating oil pressure: 300 to 450 kPa or 43 to 65 psi
- Idle oil pressure: 70 to 100 kPa or 10 to 15 psi
- Recommended oil: SAE 15W-40 diesel rated oil
Oil change intervals:
- Automotive/utility vehicles: 5,000 to 7,500 km
- Industrial equipment: every 250 operating hours
- Generator units: every 250 hours
The cooling system is liquid-based using a belt-driven centrifugal water
pump. Coolant circulates through block jackets, cylinder head passages,
radiator, and heater core if equipped. A wax-pellet thermostat regulates
coolant flow.
Cooling system characteristics:
- Capacity: 7.0 to 7.5 liters or 7.4 to 7.9 US quarts
- Thermostat opening temperature: 82 C or 180 F
- Fully open temperature: approximately 95 C or 203 F
- System pressure: 70 to 100 kPa or 10 to 15 psi
- Coolant mixture: 50 percent ethylene glycol and 50 percent water
Industrial variants often use:
- Oversized radiators
- Multiple cooling fan arrangements
- Remote-mounted radiators
- High-capacity coolers for auxiliary systems
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The 4LE2 is naturally aspirated. Intake air passes through a dry-element
air filter. Industrial variants often include multi-stage cyclone
pre-cleaners. Intake manifolds are cast aluminum or cast iron depending
on production year. Cold start assists include glow plugs or intake
heaters.
The exhaust manifold is cast iron. Industrial and agricultural variants
may include spark-arrestor mufflers. Some emissions-compliant versions
include EGR valves and oxidation catalysts.
Electrical and Starting Systems
Most 4LE2 engines use a 12-volt negative-ground electrical system.
Industrial and generator applications may use 24-volt systems.
Alternator output typically ranges from 35 to 60 amperes. Starter motors
range from 1.5 to 2.5 kW. Glow plugs or intake heaters assist with cold
starting.
Electrical components include:
- Starter motor
- Alternator
- Glow plug or intake heater circuit
- Wiring harness
- Engine control relay modules (if semi-electronic)
Electrical maintenance:
- Battery terminal cleaning
- Ground strap inspection
- Alternator belt tension
- Glow plug resistance checks
VALVE TIMING AND DRIVE MECHANISM
The camshaft and injection pump are gear-driven. Valve actuation uses
pushrods and rocker arms. Valve clearances require periodic adjustment.
Valve clearances (cold):
- Intake: 0.25 mm or 0.010 inches
- Exhaust: 0.30 mm or 0.012 inches
Adjustment interval: Every 20,000 km or 500 operating hours.
Engine dimensions:
- Length: 720 mm or 28.3 inches
- Width: 580 mm or 22.8 inches
- Height: 730 mm or 28.7 inches
Dry weight: 210 to 240 kg or 463 to 529 lbs depending on accessories
Routine maintenance intervals:
- Oil and filter: 5,000 to 7,500 km or 250 hours
- Fuel filter: every 15,000 to 20,000 km
- Air filter: inspect every 10,000 km; replace at 20,000 to 30,000 km
- Coolant replacement: every two years or 40,000 km
- Valve clearance: every 20,000 km or 500 hours
- Injector servicing: every 60,000 to 80,000 km
