The Cummins KTA19-G2 is a high-output,
turbocharged and aftercooled 19-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine
designed specifically for generator-drive applications requiring
exceptional reliability, long operating life, and stable performance
under continuous high loads. As part of the Cummins K-Series family, the
KTA19-G2 is a globally respected heavy-duty engine used in
power-generation systems, mining operations, oilfield installations,
large industrial complexes, and marine applications where dependability
is critical. The KTA19 represents the aftercooled variant of the KT19,
providing significant improvements in power density, fuel efficiency,
intake-air temperature control, and altitude capability.
Its robust cast-iron block, wet replaceable liners, mechanical PT
fuel-injection system, and heavy-duty gear-train design allow the
KTA19-G2 to withstand long-duration full-load duty cycles, high ambient
temperatures, dust-laden environments, and harsh field conditions. Known
for its long overhaul intervals and ease of maintenance, the KTA19-G2
remains a trusted foundation of industrial generator systems worldwide.
The Cummins KTA19-G2 is a four-stroke, water-cooled, turbocharged and
aftercooled inline six-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 19
liters (1,159 cubic inches). Bore is approximately 159 mm (6.25 in),
stroke is 159 mm (6.25 in), giving the engine a square-bore
configuration for balanced torque and durability.
Compression ratio: typically 14.5:1
Firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4
Idle speed: 600–700 rpm
Governed speed (genset): 1,500 rpm (50 Hz) or 1,800 rpm (60 Hz).
Engine power (industrial reference): 600–700 hp (447–522 kW) @ 1,800
rpm.
Peak torque: 2,500–3,200 Nm (1,844–2,361 lb-ft) @ 1,300–1,500 rpm.
Generator power output ranges
(approximate):
– Prime: 365–450 kW (490–603 hp)
– Standby: 400–500 kW (536–670 hp)
The crankshaft is forged steel and fully counterweighted, supported by
seven large main bearings. Pistons are forged aluminum or steel-crown
composite units featuring reinforced bowls and internal cooling
galleries. Connecting rods are forged alloy steel with replaceable
bearings. The camshaft is gear-driven and located in the block for
maximum durability.
The KTA19-G2 uses a heavy-duty cast-iron
block incorporating:
– Wet replaceable cylinder liners
– Deep-skirt construction
– Heavy ribbing and structure for vibration reduction
– Wide main-bearing saddles
– Full water-jacket cooling around the liners
Wet liners offer excellent heat dissipation, controlled cylinder
temperature, and simplified overhaul procedures, allowing liner
replacement without machining the block.
Each cylinder uses an individual cast-iron cylinder head (six total),
enabling isolated maintenance and improved cooling.
Head features:
– Direct-injection combustion chambers
– Four valves per cylinder
– Hardened valve seats and guides
– High-temperature alloy exhaust seats
– Rocker-arm and pushrod valvetrain
Cold valve-lash settings:
– Intake: 0.36 mm (0.014 in)
– Exhaust: 0.71 mm (0.028 in).
The KTA19-G2 uses the Cummins Mechanical PT (Pressure-Time)
fuel-injection system, renowned for durability and consistency.
System components:
– PT mechanical fuel pump
– Fuel transfer pump
– High-flow injectors
– Dual-stage filtration (primary + secondary)
– Mechanical fuel-timing calibration
Benefits:
– High fuel stability under varying load
– Reliable long-term performance
– Simple field serviceability
Fuel-system maintenance intervals:
– Fuel filters: 250–300 hr
– Water separator: drain daily
– Injector service: 1,500–2,000 hr
– PT pump calibration: at overhaul.
A full-pressure lubrication system ensures long engine service life.
Oil capacity: 48–55 liters (50.7–58.1 qt)
Operating oil pressure: 310–450 kPa (45–65 psi)
Idle oil pressure: 100–150 kPa (15–22 psi)
Recommended lubricants:
– SAE 15W-40
– API CI-4, CJ-4, CK-4-rated oil
Oil-change interval: 250–500 hr depending on duty cycle.
The engine uses a high-capacity cooling system designed for heavy-duty
generator applications.
Includes:
– Gear-driven or belt-driven centrifugal water pump
– Thermostatic coolant control
– Air-to-water aftercooler
– Plate-type oil cooler
– Radiator or heat-exchanger depending on configuration
Thermostat:
– Opening: 82°C (180°F)
– Full open: 95°C (203°F)
Cooling-system capacity: 75–95 liters (79–100 qt)
