General Technical Data
The Cummins ISM11E5 is a high-performance, electronically controlled, turbocharged and aftercooled inline six-cylinder diesel engine engineered to meet Euro 5 emissions standards. As a member of the Cummins ISM/ISM11 family, the ISM11E5 delivers powerful torque, strong fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and extended durability for on-highway trucks, buses, vocational vehicles, construction equipment, and industrial machinery.
The combination of advanced high-pressure fuel
injection, cooled EGR, optimized combustion chamber geometry, robust
cast-iron construction, and sophisticated electronic management makes
the ISM11E5 a globally trusted heavy-duty engine platform. Its design
prioritizes low operating cost, long service intervals, and strong
performance across varied load conditions, making it popular among fleet
operators and industrial users.
The ISM11E5 is a four-stroke, inline six-cylinder diesel engine with a
displacement of approximately 10.8 liters (659 cubic inches). Bore
typically measures 125 mm (4.92 inches), while stroke measures
approximately 147 mm (5.79 inches). The long-stroke configuration
enhances torque output at low and mid-range speeds. Compression ratio
usually falls between 16.5:1 and 17.0:1 depending on emissions
calibration. Power output varies across engine ratings but commonly
ranges from 260 to 440 horsepower (194–328 kW) at approximately
1800–2100 rpm.
Peak torque values range from 1400 to 2100 Nm
(1033–1549 lb-ft), typically achieved at 1100–1400 rpm. Idle speed is
generally set at 650–700 rpm. Firing order is 1–5–3–6–2–4.
Variable-geometry turbocharging improves transient response, altitude
performance, and load handling. The ECM optimizes fuel injection timing,
boost pressure, and emissions strategies based on real-time sensor
inputs.
The cylinder block is constructed from heavy-duty cast iron engineered
for exceptional stiffness and long service life. Strengthened ribbing
reduces block flexing, enhances vibration control, and supports elevated
peak firing pressures. The forged-steel crankshaft is supported by seven
large main bearings designed for durability in severe-duty cycles. Wet
or replaceable cylinder liners–depending on configuration–ensure
consistent heat transfer and ease of overhaul.
Machined oil galleries supply lubrication to
main bearings, connecting rod journals, and camshaft bearings. Cast-in
coolant jackets promote uniform heat dissipation across all cylinders.
Integrated piston cooling jets reduce crown temperature and support
long-term durability. Threaded mounting pads provide options for
alternators, PTO drives, A/C compressors, hydraulic pumps, and other
accessories commonly used in heavy-duty equipment.
The cast-iron cylinder head incorporates advanced direct-injection
combustion chambers designed for high-pressure common-rail systems. Four
valves per cylinder–two intake and two exhaust–enhance airflow, improve
torque output, and support clean combustion. Valve actuation is through
rocker arms and pushrods driven by a camshaft located in the block.
Hardened valve seats and high-temperature-resistant valve guides withstand the thermal cycling associated with EGR and turbocharged operation. Hydraulic lash adjusters may be present depending on variant, reducing maintenance. Integrated coolant passages stabilize thermal distribution and help prevent cracking or gasket failure. The cylinder head gasket design accommodates the high peak firing pressures required for Euro 5 emissions compliance.
Fuel System
The ISM11E5 uses a high-pressure common-rail (HPCR) fuel system or, in some variants, Cummins Celect Plus electronic unit injection. In HPCR form, a low-pressure pump supplies fuel to a high-pressure pump, which feeds the common rail at pressures commonly exceeding 1600–1800 bar (23,200–26,000 psi). Electronically actuated injectors deliver precisely metered pilot, main, and post injections to reduce noise, optimize combustion, and reduce particulate emissions.
The ECM continuously monitors rail pressure, crankshaft and camshaft position, boost pressure, intake temperature, coolant temperature, fuel temperature, EGR flow, and exhaust temperature. High-efficiency filtration removes water and fine contaminants to protect injectors from wear. Overall fuel metering precision ensures compliance with Euro 5 emissions limits while maintaining strong torque output.
Lubrication System
A full-pressure lubrication system supports long service life in heavy-duty cycles. A gear-driven oil pump draws oil through a pickup screen and delivers it through a high-capacity full-flow filter. Lubrication is distributed to crankshaft bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, rocker arms, and turbocharger bearings. Piston cooling jets stabilize combustion temperatures during high load.
Normal oil pressure ranges between 300 and 500 kPa (44–72 psi), while idle pressure is typically between 100 and 150 kPa (15–22 psi). Oil capacity generally ranges from 28 to 36 liters (29.6–38 US quarts), depending on sump configuration. Low-ash oil are required for compatibility with emissions aftertreatment systems such as DPF and SCR.
Cooling System
The cooling system uses a belt-driven centrifugal water pump to circulate coolant through block and head passages. The thermostat begins opening at around 82°C (180°F) and becomes fully open near 95°C (203°F). Cooling system pressure commonly ranges between 90 and 110 kPa (13–16 psi). Coolant capacity typically ranges from 35 to 55 liters (37–58 US quarts).
Charge-air cooling–either air-to-air or air-to-water depending on vehicle configuration–reduces intake temperature, improving combustion efficiency and reducing NOx. Proper coolant chemistry prevents corrosion, scale buildup, and cavitation wear. The ECM monitors coolant temperature and initiates protective derate or shutdown procedures when overheating occurs.
Other Systems
Turbocharging is performed by either a wastegated or variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT); VGT versions provide superior transient response, enhanced EGR control, and improved braking performance. The intake system uses a heavy-duty dry-element air filter, with optional dual-stage filtration for dusty environments. Euro 5 emissions-compliant versions typically include EGR, DOC, DPF, SCR, and ammonia slip catalysts.
The electrical system operates on 12- or 24-volt configurations with alternator outputs ranging between 80 and 150 amperes. The ECM receives inputs from numerous sensors and manages diagnostics, fault codes, derate strategies, and system protection routines. Accessory interface options allow integration with PTO systems, hydraulic pumps, refrigeration units, and industrial power modules.
