The Caterpillar 3208TA is a turbocharged and
aftercooled variant of the widely used CAT 3208 diesel engine.
Originally developed in the 1970s, the 3208 family became famous for its
versatility, compact V8 layout, and broad use across on-road trucks,
marine vessels, construction equipment, generators, pumps, and
agricultural machinery. The 3208TA (Turbocharged Aftercooled) version
introduced significant performance improvements, allowing higher
horsepower ratings, better thermal efficiency, lower exhaust
temperatures, and improved durability under sustained heavy load.
Unlike many heavy-duty CAT engines, the 3208 series does not use
replaceable cylinder liners; instead, it uses direct parent-bore
cylinders. The 3208TA retains this structure while reinforcing internal
components to handle higher combustion pressures. The turbo-aftercooled
configuration increases power output without compromising engine life.
Even today, many 3208TA engines are still in operation due to their
reliability, rebuildability, and wide availability of parts.
The Caterpillar 3208TA is a four-stroke, water-cooled, V8 diesel engine
with turbocharging and aftercooling. Total displacement is 10.4 liters
(636 cubic inches). Bore is 114 mm (4.49 in), and stroke is 127 mm (5.00
in). The V-angle between banks is 90 degrees. The compression ratio
varies depending on rating, typically 16.0:1 to 16.5:1.
Horsepower ratings vary significantly:
– Truck/on-highway versions: 250–375 hp (186–280 kW) at 2,200–2,600 rpm
– Marine versions: 250–375 hp (186–280 kW) at 2,400–2,800 rpm
(light-duty ratings up to 435 hp)
– Industrial/generator-drive: 200–350 hp (149–261 kW) at 1,800–2,200 rpm
Idle speed is typically 650–750 rpm. Governed maximum speed depends on
application, usually 2,200–2,800 rpm. Firing order is 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2.
Peak torque ranges between: 800 and 1,200 Nm (590–885 lb-ft) at
1,300–1,600 rpm.
The crankshaft is forged steel, supported by five main bearings. Pistons
are cast-aluminum alloy with reinforced bowls and internal cooling
galleries. Connecting rods are forged steel with replaceable bearings.
The camshaft is gear-driven and located centrally within the block.
The 3208TA cylinder block is cast iron with parent-bore cylinders rather
than replaceable liners. It features deep ribbing for stiffness and
durability. The crankcase design provides stability for high-load
operations. Coolant passages wrap around each cylinder to prevent
thermal distortion.
Two separate cylinder heads are used—one for each bank. Each head is
cast iron and features indirect or direct injection (depending on year),
though most 3208TA models use direct injection. Each cylinder has two
valves (one intake, one exhaust).
Cold valve-lash settings:
– Intake: 0.38–0.43 mm (0.015–0.017 in)
– Exhaust: 0.64–0.69 mm (0.025–0.027 in).
The 3208TA uses a mechanically governed direct-injection fuel system.
Fuel is drawn through a water separator and dual filters before entering
a mechanically driven rotary or inline injection pump. Injectors deliver
atomized fuel directly into the piston crown.
Injection pressures range from:
– 250–300 bar depending on pump configuration
Fuel system maintenance:
– Replace filters every 250–300 hours
– Drain water separator regularly
– Injectors serviced every 1,000–1,500 hours
– Injection timing inspection at major services.
The lubrication system is a full-pressure wet-sump design. A
high-capacity gear-driven oil pump supplies lubrication to all major
components including crankshaft bearings, connecting rods, camshaft,
rockers, and turbocharger bearings.
Oil capacity: 15–18 liters (15.8–19 qt)
Normal oil pressure: 300–450 kPa (44–65 psi)
Idle pressure: 100–150 kPa (15–22 psi).
Cooling is achieved with a belt- or gear-driven centrifugal water pump.
Coolant circulates through the block, heads, aftercoolers, and radiator
or heat-exchanger (marine). Thermostat opens at 82°C (180°F) and is
fully open by 95°C (203°F).
Cooling capacity: 25–35 liters (26–37 qt)
System pressure: 70–100 kPa (10–15 psi).
| Intake and Exhaust Systems |
Turbocharging dramatically increases airflow, enabling higher fuel
delivery and power. Aftercooling lowers intake-air temperature,
improving efficiency and reducing exhaust temperatures.
Air intake systems vary:
– Trucks: large dry-element filters
– Marine: multi-stage water-separated systems
– Industrial: heavy-duty dual-stage or cyclone filters
Exhaust manifolds are high-temperature cast iron. Marine engines may use
water-cooled manifolds and risers.
| Electrical and Starting Systems |
Available with 12- or 24-volt configurations. Alternators typically
rated 45–100 amps. Starters range from 3–6 kW. Sensors may include
coolant temperature, oil pressure, intake-air heater, and tachometer
pickups.
The engine can support:
– PTOs
– Hydraulic pumps
– Air compressors
– Marine gearboxes
– Generator heads
– Industrial drives.
Engine dimensions:
