The Yamaha T60LB is a 60-horsepower,
four-stroke outboard engine specifically engineered as a High Thrust
model to deliver superior power and control for demanding applications
such as pontoon boats, large sailboats, and work vessels. This model is
distinguished by its specialized high thrust lower unit and higher
2.33:1 gear ratio, which allows it to spin a larger propeller and
generate significantly more pushing power than standard outboards of
similar horsepower.
The T60LB features a 996cc, inline four-cylinder powerhead with single
overhead camshaft (SOHC) and eight-valve configuration, electronic fuel
injection, electric start system with Prime Start, remote control
steering, and power trim and tilt. Its robust construction, combined
with Yamaha's advanced anti-corrosion protection system, ensures
long-term reliability in demanding marine environments, making it a
preferred choice for boaters requiring maximum low-end thrust and
durability.
The Yamaha T60LB is a 4-stroke, Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC), inline
4-cylinder engine featuring an 8-valve configuration. The total
displacement is 996 cc (60.8 cu.in), achieved through a bore and stroke
of 65.0 mm (2.56 inches) and 75.0 mm (2.95 inches), respectively. It
produces a maximum prop shaft output of 44.1 kW, equivalent to 60
horsepower, at 5,500 rpm. The engine has a full throttle operating range
of 5,000 to 6,000 rpm. The idle speed is set between 700 and 800 rpm.
The compression ratio is 9.5:1.
The powerhead is built upon a robust cylinder block designed for
longevity and smooth operation, with the large cubic-capacity,
eight-valve, four-cylinder, long-stroke marine engine delivering
impressive torque from low to mid-speed ranges.
The cylinder head incorporates a Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC)
operating four valves per cylinder - two intake and two exhaust - for
optimized breathing and combustion efficiency. Large engine mounts
reduce noise and minimize vibrations for a more enjoyable boating
experience. The valve clearances are critical for performance and must
be maintained within specified ranges.
The intake valve clearance is set to 0.15-0.25 mm (0.006-0.010 inches),
while the exhaust valve clearance is set to 0.25-0.35 mm (0.010-0.014
inches). The ignition system is a TCI (Transistor Controlled Ignition)
microcomputer system, which provides precise spark timing without moving
parts for reliable, maintenance-free operation.
The fuel system is a sophisticated Multi-Point Electronic Fuel Injection
(EFI) system, managed by an advanced microprocessor Engine Control
Module (ECM) which receives inputs from six major sensors located
throughout the engine. This information ensures the engine runs at peak
performance by delivering the right fuel-air mixture to each combustion
chamber at the optimum timing.
The system results in first-time, every-time hot and cold starting,
improved fuel efficiency, and excellent throttle response. The engine
operates on regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of
87, and an ethanol blend limit of 10 percent maximum. Recommended fuel
filtration includes an external Yamaha 10-Micron Fuel-Water Separating
Filter.
The T60LB utilizes a wet sump lubrication system, meaning engine oil is
contained within a sump in the powerhead. The recommended engine oil is
high-quality 4-stroke outboard motor oil, with Yamalube 4M being the
preferred brand.
Acceptable oil types include SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 viscosities that meet
API service classifications SE, SF, SG, SH, SJ, or SL. The total engine
oil capacity is 2.5 liters (2.6 US quarts), with some specifications
indicating 2.1 liters when replacing the oil filter and 1.9 liters
without filter replacement.
Cooling is managed by a raw-water system with thermostatic control,
circulating water through passages in the engine block and cylinder
head. A water pump, driven by the drive shaft, draws water from outside
the boat and forces it through the engine to maintain optimal operating
temperatures. The thermostat helps maintain acceptable cylinder
temperatures across a wide range of engine speeds.
A fresh water flushing system is integrated into the design with an easy
access connector, allowing operators to flush salt and dirt from the
outboard without having to run the engine. Flushing the engine after
each usage reduces corrosion and extends the engine's life.

The exhaust system utilizes Yamaha's proven labyrinth exhaust system,
which reduces engine noise at low RPM and idle through a water-sealed
outer wall around the exhaust muffler, effectively reducing exhaust tone
for whisper-quiet operation while enhancing cooling to protect against
corrosion. The gear shift positions are forward, neutral, and reverse.
The gear ratio is 2.33:1, derived from a 28/12 gear set, which is the
key mechanical difference from standard four-stroke platforms and allows
the engine to spin a much larger propeller, generating more power to the
water with less slippage. The reduction gear type is spiral bevel gear,
with gears specially hardened to withstand the toughest working
conditions for long-term durability.
The clutch is a dog type, providing positive engagement. The propeller
shaft utilizes a spline drive system for secure propeller mounting, and
the propeller rotation, when viewed from the rear, is clockwise in
forward gear. The gear case requires hypoid gear oil meeting API GL-4
SAE 90 standards, with a total capacity of 0.67 liters (0.70 US quarts).
The engine is equipped with a power trim and tilt system, providing
full, relaxed control over the engine's angle relative to the transom.
The trim angle is adjustable within a range of -4 to +16 degrees,
allowing operators to optimize boat attitude for acceleration, fuel
economy, and ride comfort under varying load and water conditions.
The negative trim settings allow for improved acceleration and the
ability to bring the boat onto the plane more quickly. The tilt-up angle
is 69 degrees. The system enables shallow water operation and easy
trailering or beaching. The steering angle is 40 degrees from center in
either direction.
The T60LB is specifically designed to utilize Yamaha's patented Dual
Thrust propellers, which provide maximum traction in both forward and
reverse by redirecting exhaust flow away from the propeller blades,
reducing reverse ventilation and generating more power to the water.
These large-diameter, low-pitch propellers increase forward thrust by up
to 60 percent and reverse thrust by up to 70 percent. The Alloy White
Dual Thrust Series is designed for sailboats and other large
displacement craft, built to push heavy loads through the water with the
hub carefully designed to redirect exhaust flow away from the blades,
cutting through clean water for higher efficiency and better
acceleration.
The Aluminium SDS K Series is ideal for heavier hulled boats such as
fiberglass and plate aluminum, as well as modified V-type hulls,
catamarans, pontoon, and commercial work launches, incorporating
Yamaha's Shift Dampener System (SDS) for quiet and smooth shifting.
Selecting the correct propeller is essential for achieving optimal
engine performance within the recommended full throttle operating range.
The overall length of the outboard is 698 mm (27.5 inches). The overall
width is 386 mm (15.2 inches). The overall height for the long shaft
model, designated for a 20-inch transom, is 1,476 mm (58.1 inches), with
a corresponding transom height of 530 mm (20.9 inches). An extra-long
shaft version is available with transom height of 644 mm (25.4 inches).
The dry weight for the long shaft version is 118 to 119 kg (260 to 262
lbs).
Routine maintenance is essential for optimal performance and longevity.
The engine is equipped with a TCI microcomputer ignition system. The
alternator output is a robust 12-volt, 16-ampere system with
rectifier-regulator, ensuring power is always available to start the
engine even after long periods of idling or running at low revs, while
delivering sufficient power to run onboard electronic devices.
The standard spark plug for the T60LB is an NGK DPR6EB-9. The spark plug
gap must be maintained between 0.8 and 0.9 mm (0.031-0.035 inches). The
engine is compatible with Yamaha's Digital Network Gauges (Command
Link), providing operators with information needed to maximize engine
performance and efficiency, including tachometer, hours run, trim angle,
oil pressure, warning lA, variable trolling control, speed-fuel, and
fuel economy.
Yamaha's variable trolling control allows precise adjustment of the
engine's idling speed from 650 to 900 RPM in 50 RPM increments, allowing
fishermen to perfect their lure presentation when chasing different
species of fish. The CARB rating is 3-Star, indicating ultra-low
emissions. The maintenance schedule includes key services at regular
intervals. The cooling system requires periodic inspection including
water pump, thermostat, and cooling passages.
A visual inspection of the engine and outboard should be performed
before each use to detect any signs of damage or wear. The optional
Yamaha Customer Outboard Protection (Y-COP) engine immobilizer system is
available to prevent unauthorized start-ups when the boat is unattended.
Adhering to correct torque specifications is critical during assembly
and maintenance to ensure proper sealing, component retention, and safe
operation. The spark plug must be torqued to 18 Nm (13.5 lb-ft) to
ensure proper seating without damaging the cylinder head threads.
The propeller nut, which secures the propeller to the propeller shaft,
requires 35 Nm (25 lb-ft). The engine oil drain plug must be tightened
to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft) to prevent leaks while allowing future removal. The
oil filter requires 18 Nm (13.5 lb-ft) for proper sealing against its
mounting surface.
The Yamaha T60LB is intended for use on boats where the total horsepower
does not exceed the vessel's maximum rated power capacity, as indicated
on the boat's capacity plate. Its 60-horsepower output with high thrust
lower unit makes it exceptionally well-suited for pontoon boats,
providing excellent low-end thrust for efficient cruising and effortless
docking even with full loads.
It serves as powerful and efficient auxiliary propulsion for larger
sailboats, providing superior thrust for docking, navigating currents,
and reliable backup power. The engine excels for smaller workboats,
barges, or utility craft, delivering precise control and strong thrust
for specialized tasks. It provides necessary power and control for
larger, heavier fishing boats, particularly those used for trolling or
requiring precise boat positioning, and is well-suited for moving
smaller houseboats with ease and control.
The long shaft configuration is specifically designed for boats with a
20-inch transom. The engine's robust construction and high thrust design
make it particularly attractive for vessels where maximum low-end power
is required. Proper installation, including correct remote control cable
adjustment and battery selection, is essential to ensure safe handling
and prevent loss of control. As with all outboards, operators must
always ensure the engine stop switch lanyard is attached to a secure
part of their clothing or life jacket.
