The Yamaha FT60GET is built around a robust 996 cc inline four-cylinder
powerhead. The closed-deck cylinder block is constructed from
high-strength, low-weight aluminum alloy, ensuring durability while
minimizing overall engine weight. The cylinder bore and stroke are
configured at 65.0 mm and 75.0 mm respectively. The cylinder head
features a Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) design operating eight valves
(two intake and two exhaust per cylinder) via rocker arms.
The valve train is designed for reliability and quiet operation. The
cylinder head and block are designed to provide efficient cooling water
flow around the cylinders and combustion chambers. The crankshaft is
supported by multiple bearings for smooth operation and long service
life.
The pistons are made from high-strength aluminum alloy and feature a
refined skirt design to reduce friction and noise. The connecting rods
are forged for strength to handle the high-torque output of this engine.
The powerhead assembly is designed to meet stringent emission
regulations without sacrificing performance.
The SOHC valve train utilizes hydraulic valve lifters in some
configurations, which eliminate the need for periodic valve clearance
adjustment. However, for engines with mechanical adjusters, precise
valve clearances must be maintained. The intake valve clearance is set
to 0.15-0.25 mm (0.006-0.010 in), while the exhaust valve clearance,
which experiences higher operating temperatures, is set to 0.25-0.35 mm
(0.010-0.014 in).
Proper valve clearance ensures optimal engine performance, quiet
operation, and prevents valve burning. The camshaft is driven by a
timing chain, which is designed for the life of the engine and requires
no routine maintenance. The valve train components are lubricated by
pressurized oil from the wet sump system. The engine incorporates a
blow-by gas recirculation system that separates oil from the crankcase
gases before returning only fuel vapor to the intake system, resulting
in cleaner emissions and reduced oil consumption.
The FT60GET utilizes a sophisticated Multi-Point Electronic Fuel
Injection (EFI) system. This system precisely meters fuel to each
cylinder individually through dedicated fuel injectors, optimizing the
air-fuel mixture for all operating conditions.
The EFI system includes an Electric Control Module (ECM) that processes
data from multiple sensors, including intake air temperature and
pressure, throttle position, and cooling water temperature, to calculate
the exact fuel requirement. The system ensures clean combustion,
improved throttle response, and superior fuel efficiency compared to
carbureted engines.
Cold starts are simplified with Prime Start, which automatically
advances the idle speed and adjusts fuel enrichment without requiring a
separate choke. The fuel system includes a high-pressure electric fuel
pump, a vapor separator to manage fuel vapors, and a fuel filter that
requires periodic inspection and replacement. The engine operates on
regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 86.
The Yamaha FT60GET employs a wet sump lubrication system, meaning engine
oil is stored in an oil pan integrated into the engine block. A
trochoidal oil pump, driven by the crankshaft, draws oil from the sump
and circulates it under pressure throughout the engine. Pressurized oil
is delivered to the crankshaft main bearings, connecting rod bearings,
camshaft journals, and valve train components.
The system includes a full-flow oil filter that removes contaminants
from the oil. An oil pressure switch monitors system pressure and
triggers a warning if pressure drops below a safe level. The recommended
oil is a high-quality 4-stroke outboard motor oil, with Yamalube being
the preferred choice.
Oil viscosity should be selected based on operating temperatures, with
SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 being suitable for most conditions. The engine oil
capacity, including the filter, is 2.1 liters (2.2 US quarts). Regular
oil and filter changes are critical for engine longevity.
The cooling system is a raw-water, thermostatically controlled design. A
high-capacity water pump, driven by the driveshaft, draws water from the
body of water through an inlet in the lower unit. This water is then
circulated through the engine block and cylinder head water jackets to
absorb combustion heat.
The system is managed by a thermostat that regulates coolant flow,
allowing the engine to warm up quickly and maintain optimal operating
temperature. Once the engine reaches operating temperature, the
thermostat opens, permitting full water flow to prevent overheating.
The FT60GET features a freshwater flushing device, allowing owners to
easily connect a garden hose to flush the cooling system with fresh
water after operation in salt or polluted water, significantly reducing
corrosion risk. The cooling system incorporates a cooling water
temperature sensor that monitors engine temperature and communicates
with the ECM to optimize engine operation and trigger overheat
protection if necessary.
| Mid Section and Lower Unit |
The mid section houses the driveshaft and exhaust passage, connecting
the powerhead to the lower unit. The lower unit is specifically
engineered for high-thrust applications. The gear ratio is 2.33:1,
achieved with a pinion gear and forward gear set of 28/12 teeth. This
specially optimized gear ratio is lower than standard outboard ratios,
providing increased torque to the propeller for superior thrust and
acceleration, particularly under heavy load conditions.
The reduction gears are of the spiral bevel type, chosen for their
strength and smooth, quiet operation. The clutch mechanism is a dog
clutch, which provides positive engagement for shifting. Gear shift
positions are forward, neutral, and reverse. The propeller shaft is
splined to accept the special high-thrust propellers.
The lower unit housing is constructed from corrosion-resistant materials
and includes sacrificial anodes to protect against galvanic corrosion.
The gear housing is filled with hypoid gear oil meeting API GL-4 SAE 90
specifications, with a total capacity of 0.67 liters (0.70 US quarts).
Regular inspection and periodic changing of the gear oil are necessary
to detect water ingress or wear particles.
The Yamaha FT60GET is equipped with a power trim and tilt system,
providing effortless adjustment of the engine angle relative to the boat
transom. The system uses an electro-hydraulic pump and dual hydraulic
cylinders to raise and lower the engine. A wide range of trim angles is
available, including negative trim positions that help the boat achieve
plane more quickly by forcing the bow down during acceleration.
The system is controlled by rocker switches on the remote control or,
optionally, on a multifunction tiller handle. A built-in shallow water
drive capability allows the engine to be tilted up significantly for
navigating in very shallow water while still providing some propulsion.
The maximum tilt-up angle facilitates beaching, launching, and
trailering. The power trim and tilt system uses ATF Dexron II fluid and
includes a reservoir with a fill cap that should be tightened to 7 Nm
(5.2 lb-ft). The system includes electrical components such as relays
and a trim sensor that can be diagnosed using service tools.
A defining feature of the FT60GET is its use of Yamaha's patented
Dual-Thrust propeller system. These special propellers are engineered
with a larger diameter and lower pitch than conventional propellers to
maximize thrust in both forward and reverse directions.
The blade design, combined with exhaust gas redirection, provides
exceptional reverse thrust, dramatically improving maneuverability when
docking or handling heavy boats in tight quarters. The high-thrust
design also reduces cavitation and propeller slippage under heavy load.
Standard propeller sizes for high-thrust applications differ from
conventional outboards; the exact size should be selected based on boat
type, weight, and application to ensure the engine operates within its
full throttle RPM range of 5,000-6,000 RPM. The propeller is secured
with a propeller nut that must be tightened to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft).
Optional propellers may be available for specific applications.
The Yamaha FT60GET is available in multiple shaft lengths to accommodate
different boat transom heights. The long shaft model (FT60GETL) has an
overall height of 1,476 mm (58.1 in) and is designed for a transom
height of 530 mm (20.9 in). An extra-long shaft model (FT60GETX) is also
available for transom heights of 644 mm (25.4 in).
Overall length of the engine is 698 mm (27.5 in), and overall width is
386 mm (15.2 in). The weight of the long shaft model with propeller is
approximately 125.0 kg (276 lb), while the extra-long shaft model weighs
approximately 127.0 kg (280 lb).
