General Technical Data
The Toyota 3ZR-FAE is a 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline engine developed as part of Toyota’s modern ZR engine family. It was introduced in 2007 as a successor to the 1AZ-FSE and 1AZ-FE series, featuring advanced control systems aimed at improving fuel economy, emissions, and drivability. The 3ZR-FAE employs an all-aluminum construction, chain-driven DOHC valvetrain, and Toyota’s Valvematic technology, which provides continuously variable valve lift and timing on the intake side. Earlier standard versions of the 3ZR-FAE were equipped with Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing – intelligent) on both intake and exhaust camshafts, while later Valvematic-equipped units added continuously variable valve lift to further enhance efficiency and torque response.
The engine’s balance of refinement, efficiency,
and moderate performance made it suitable for a wide range of mid-size
vehicles including the Avensis, Corolla, RAV4, and Wish. With its
lightweight design, low friction internals, and optimized combustion
dynamics, the 3ZR-FAE became one of Toyota’s key naturally aspirated
engines of the late 2000s and 2010s.
The 3ZR-FAE has a total displacement of 1987 cc (121.3 cubic inches),
achieved through an 80.5 millimeter (3.17 inch) bore and 97.6 millimeter
(3.84 inch) stroke. This long-stroke configuration provides excellent
mid-range torque and efficiency. The compression ratio varies slightly
depending on version and market, typically between 10.0:1 and 10.4:1.
Maximum power output for the Dual VVT-i variant is approximately 110 kW
(148 horsepower, 150 PS) at 6200 revolutions per minute, while the
Valvematic version produces up to 116 kW (156 horsepower, 158 PS) at the
same speed. Peak torque is 195 to 200 Nm (144 to 147 lb-ft) at around
4000 rpm. Idle speed is controlled electronically at 700 ± 50 rpm. The
redline is approximately 6500 rpm. The firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The cylinder block is made from aluminum alloy with cast-iron cylinder
liners for wear resistance. It uses a deep-skirt structure for strength
and vibration suppression. The forged steel crankshaft runs on five main
bearings. Lightweight aluminum pistons with low-tension rings minimize
friction, and oil jets cool the piston undersides. The connecting rods
are fracture-split steel types for precision alignment and strength. The
cylinder head is aluminum with dual overhead camshafts operating four
valves per cylinder via bucket-type lifters with shims. Hydraulic
lifters are not used; instead, valve clearance adjustment is performed
mechanically as required at major service intervals.
The valve timing system uses Toyota’s Dual VVT-i mechanism on both
camshafts, providing continuously variable phasing. The Valvematic
system adds continuous control of intake valve lift, allowing throttling
losses to be reduced by modulating air intake through valve lift rather
than throttle plate restriction. This system allows nearly throttle-less
control, improving fuel efficiency and engine response under varying
load conditions. Both versions are managed by an advanced engine control
unit (ECU) monitoring numerous sensors for precise control of ignition,
fuel, and valve operation.
Fuel System
The 3ZR-FAE employs sequential multi-point electronic fuel injection (EFI). Fuel is supplied from an electric in-tank pump through a high-pressure line to the common fuel rail. Injectors are top-feed solenoid type, mounted in the intake ports of the cylinder head, delivering finely atomized fuel spray. The fuel pressure is regulated electronically through the returnless fuel system, maintaining approximately 380 kPa (55 psi) under normal operation.
The ECU determines injection timing and duration based on throttle position, intake air temperature, manifold pressure, and oxygen sensor feedback. Recommended fuel is unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of at least 95 RON (91 AKI). Fuel filter service is usually integrated into the pump assembly and considered lifetime unless contamination occurs. Injector cleaning is recommended at 80,000 km (50,000 miles) intervals for optimal performance.
Lubrication System
The engine uses a fully pressurized wet-sump lubrication system. A trochoid oil pump driven by the crankshaft draws oil from the pan through a mesh strainer and supplies it under pressure to the oil galleries, crankshaft, camshafts, and valve train. Piston cooling oil jets are used to stabilize piston temperature and prevent knock. A full-flow spin-on paper element oil filter ensures proper filtration.
Normal oil pressure is approximately 300 to 500 kPa (43 to 72 psi) at 3000 rpm, with about 100 kPa (15 psi) at idle. Total oil capacity with filter change is 4.2 liters (4.4 US quarts, 3.7 Imperial quarts). Toyota recommends SAE 0W-20 or 5W-30 engine oil meeting API SN or ILSAC GF-5 specifications. Oil and filter should be replaced every 10,000 km (6,000 miles) or six months under normal conditions. The crankcase ventilation system uses a PCV valve located on the valve cover, ensuring controlled recirculation of blow-by gases.
Cooling System
The 3ZR-FAE utilizes a liquid cooling system with a belt-driven centrifugal water pump, aluminum cross-flow radiator, and electric cooling fans. Coolant circulation routes through the block, head, and heater core. The thermostat begins to open at 82°C (180°F) and is fully open at approximately 95°C (203°F). The pressurized cooling system operates at 108 kPa (15.6 psi) with total coolant capacity of around 6.3 liters (6.7 US quarts).
The coolant mixture is a 50/50 blend of ethylene glycol antifreeze and deionized water, providing corrosion protection and freeze resistance to -35°C (-31°F). Coolant replacement is specified every 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or five years. The system incorporates sensors for ECU temperature monitoring and auxiliary fans controlled through relays for precise temperature regulation.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
The intake system features a plastic composite manifold with long, tuned
runners to improve torque across the midrange. A resonator chamber
reduces induction noise. In Valvematic engines, the intake manifold
design is optimized for smooth airflow due to variable lift operation.
The throttle body is electronically controlled (ETCS-i). The air cleaner
uses a dry paper element to be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 km
(12,000 to 18,000 miles).
The exhaust manifold is a high-temperature stainless-steel or cast-iron
type, integrated with a catalytic converter in most applications.
Downstream, a secondary catalyst and oxygen sensors are fitted to ensure
emission compliance. The system meets Euro 4 and later Euro 5 standards,
depending on vehicle market. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used on
select versions for NOx reduction, and an air-fuel ratio sensor upstream
ensures precise control of combustion.
Ignition and Electrical System
Ignition is by a direct coil-on-plug (COP) system with four individual ignition coils, each controlled by the ECU. Spark plugs are iridium-tipped for longevity, gapped at 1.0 millimeter (0.039 inch). Replacement interval is approximately 100,000 km (62,000 miles).
The alternator is rated around 100 amperes, and the starting motor is a 1.2 kilowatt reduction gear type. The electrical system operates at 12 volts. Engine grounding and shielding are critical for ECU stability, particularly in Valvematic versions due to additional actuators and sensors.
Valve Timing and Drive System
Camshaft drive is via a single-row roller timing chain with an automatic hydraulic tensioner and chain guides. Chain stretch or tensioner wear should be checked at high mileage but replacement is not scheduled as regular maintenance. The Valvematic mechanism employs an electronically actuated control motor that adjusts the position of an eccentric cam between the intake camshaft and rocker arm, continuously varying intake valve lift between approximately 1 and 11 mm (0.04 to 0.43 inch). This system allows seamless transition between low-load efficiency and high-load power operation. The timing chain also drives the water pump and oil pump via intermediate gears in some applications.
Dimensions and Weight
Overall length is approximately 610 mm (24.0 inches), width 640 mm (25.2 inches), and height 680 mm (26.8 inches). The dry weight is about 130 kg (287 lbs) for Dual VVT-i versions and around 135 kg (298 lbs) for Valvematic units. Compact size and transverse layout compatibility make the engine suitable for both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations.
Maintenance Data
Engine oil and filter should be replaced every 10,000 km (6,000 miles). Air filter every 20,000 to 30,000 km (12,000 to 18,000 miles). Spark plugs every 100,000 km (62,000 miles). Coolant every 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or five years. Valve clearance inspection is recommended every 100,000 km (62,000 miles). Drive belt inspection every 40,000 km (25,000 miles). The timing chain is maintenance-free but should be inspected for elongation at high mileage.
Standard compression pressure is 1,350 kPa (196 psi) at 300 rpm, with a minimum limit of 980 kPa (142 psi). Maximum difference between cylinders should not exceed 100 kPa (15 psi). Idle speed is 700 ± 50 rpm. Typical fuel consumption for Valvematic-equipped vehicles averages around 7.0 to 7.5 liters per 100 km (31 to 34 mpg US).
