General Technical Data
The Toyota 2AD-FTV is a 2.2-liter inline four-cylinder common-rail direct injection turbocharged diesel engine developed by Toyota Motor Corporation as part of the AD engine family. Introduced in 2005, the 2AD-FTV replaced the older 2C and 1CD-FTV engines, representing a significant leap in diesel technology for Toyota passenger vehicles. Designed to meet Euro 4 and later Euro 5 emissions standards, it features aluminum alloy construction, a 16-valve DOHC cylinder head, and high-pressure common-rail fuel injection controlled electronically for precise combustion management.
The engine was used in numerous models such as
the Avensis, RAV4, Auris, Verso, and Lexus IS220d, balancing performance
with economy and environmental compliance. The Euro 4 version employed
an oxidation catalyst and cooled EGR system, while the Euro 5 variant
added a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), refined injection timing, and
improved swirl control to meet stricter emission limits.
The 2AD-FTV displaces 2,231 cc (136.1 cubic inches) with a bore of 86.0
mm (3.39 inches) and a stroke of 96.0 mm (3.78 inches), giving it a
slightly undersquare design optimized for torque. Compression ratio for
Euro 4 engines is approximately 17.6:1, reduced to 16.8:1 on Euro 5
versions to lower combustion temperatures and NOx formation. Maximum
power output is between 100 and 130 kW (134–175 horsepower) depending on
application and emission standard. Peak torque ranges from 310 to 400 Nm
(229–295 lb-ft), available between 1,800 and 2,800 rpm.
The engine runs on the four-stroke diesel cycle with direct injection and variable-geometry turbocharging. The firing order is 1-3-4-2, and idle speed is typically 750 ± 50 rpm. Redline is around 4,500 rpm. The block is made of aluminum alloy with cast iron liners for durability, and the crankshaft is forged steel, supported by five main bearings. Balance shafts located in the lower block minimize secondary vibration, enhancing smoothness. The cylinder head is aluminum with dual overhead camshafts operating four valves per cylinder through hydraulic lifters, eliminating the need for valve clearance adjustments.
Fuel System
The 2AD-FTV utilizes a Denso common-rail direct injection system operating at pressures up to 180 MPa (26,000 psi). A camshaft-driven high-pressure pump delivers fuel from the tank to a common rail that feeds four solenoid injectors. Each injector performs pilot, main, and post injections within each cycle to optimize combustion, reduce noise, and minimize particulate formation. The Euro 5 version introduced multi-stage injection and piezoelectric injectors for finer control. Fuel pressure and injection timing are managed by the engine control unit (ECU) based on input from sensors monitoring crank angle, airflow, coolant temperature, and accelerator position.
A fuel temperature sensor and pressure regulator ensure consistent operation under varying conditions. The return-less system minimizes vapor formation, and fuel is filtered through a fine element filter with a water separator that must be drained periodically. Recommended fuel is low-sulfur diesel conforming to EN590, with cetane number above 50. Typical fuel pressure during idle is 25–30 MPa (3,600–4,350 psi) and up to 180 MPa under load.
Lubrication System
Lubrication is by a full-pressure wet-sump system using a trochoid-type oil pump driven by the crankshaft. The pump draws oil from the sump through a pickup and delivers it through a full-flow oil filter to the crankshaft bearings, camshafts, turbocharger bearings, and valve train components. Oil jets spray the underside of the pistons for cooling. The system maintains oil pressure of approximately 200 kPa (29 psi) at idle and 400–600 kPa (58–87 psi) at 3,000 rpm.
Oil capacity including filter is approximately 5.9 liters (6.2 US quarts). Recommended oil is synthetic 5W-30 meeting ACEA C2 or C3 specification, formulated for low-ash DPF-compatible operation. Oil change interval is every 15,000 km (9,000 miles) or annually, whichever occurs first, though shorter intervals are recommended for severe service or frequent short trips. The oil filter is a replaceable cartridge type located on the engine block’s lower right side.
Cooling System
The cooling system is a pressurized liquid circulation type, driven by a belt-driven centrifugal water pump. Coolant flows through the block, cylinder head, radiator, and heater core. A wax-type thermostat begins opening at 82°C (180°F) and is fully open by 95°C (203°F). The system incorporates an aluminum radiator with plastic end tanks and an electric cooling fan controlled by the ECU based on coolant temperature and A/C operation.
System capacity is approximately 7.2 liters (7.6 US quarts). The cooling system is pressurized to 108 kPa (15.6 psi). The recommended coolant mixture is 50% long-life ethylene glycol antifreeze and 50% distilled water, providing protection down to –35°C (–31°F). The Euro 5 version uses an improved EGR cooler integrated with the coolant circuit to reduce NOx emissions. Coolant replacement interval is typically every 160,000 km (100,000 miles) or 5 years.
Intake, Exhaust, and Turbocharging Systems
The 2AD-FTV employs a variable-geometry turbocharger (VGT) integrated with an intercooler system to improve efficiency across the rev range. The turbocharger’s vane position is controlled by vacuum or electronically depending on model year. Boost pressure ranges from 1.1 to 1.5 bar (16–22 psi). The intercooler is an air-to-air type mounted in front of the radiator, reducing intake charge temperature by approximately 60°C (108°F) under full load. The intake manifold is aluminum alloy, designed to enhance swirl and uniform air distribution.
The exhaust manifold is made of high-silicon cast iron and incorporates the turbocharger housing. Euro 4 engines feature an oxidation catalyst to reduce HC and CO, while Euro 5 variants add a DPF with active regeneration using post-injection events to raise exhaust temperature. The EGR system is electronically controlled with a cooler, regulating recirculated gas volume for emissions reduction. In Euro 5 configurations, an EGR bypass valve and DPF temperature sensors assist in efficient regeneration management.
Electrical and Starting Systems
As a compression-ignition engine, the 2AD-FTV does not employ spark plugs. Instead, it uses quick-heating ceramic glow plugs controlled by the ECU to preheat combustion chambers during cold starts. The glow plugs operate at approximately 11 volts and reach operating temperature in under two seconds. The engine uses a 12-volt electrical system with a 100-amp alternator and a gear-reduction starter motor rated at 2.0 kW.
The ECU also governs throttle position, boost pressure, injection timing, and glow plug operation based on sensor feedback. A crankshaft position sensor, camshaft sensor, manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor, and mass air flow (MAF) sensor provide real-time input for precise combustion control.
Other Systems
The Euro 5 2AD-FTV integrates several emission control systems beyond the EGR and DPF. The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system routes blow-by gases back to the intake to reduce emissions and maintain crankcase pressure balance. An oxidation catalyst works in conjunction with the DPF to oxidize unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. The fuel vapor recovery system (EVAP) is not used since the engine is diesel, but an activated carbon filter may be fitted for crankcase gas management.
The turbocharger incorporates a vacuum actuator or electronic stepper for vane control, and a boost pressure sensor ensures closed-loop operation. Diagnostic functions are OBD-II compliant, with sensors monitoring DPF differential pressure, exhaust temperature, and oxygen concentration. In some late Euro 5 units, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system using AdBlue (urea solution) was added to meet Euro 5b and 6 standards. The ECU stores fault codes for retrieval via scan tool, allowing precise troubleshooting.
Dimensions and Weight
Overall length of the 2AD-FTV is approximately 640 mm (25.2 inches), width 710 mm (28.0 inches), and height 700 mm (27.6 inches). Dry weight is about 155 kg (342 lbs) for Euro 4 versions and approximately 165 kg (364 lbs) for Euro 5 versions equipped with DPF and additional hardware. Compact transverse installation allows use in both front- and all-wheel-drive vehicles. The engine mount system utilizes hydraulic damped mounts to isolate vibration and noise from the chassis.
Maintenance Data
Routine maintenance ensures reliability and compliance with emissions standards. Engine oil and filter should be replaced every 15,000 km (9,000 miles). The fuel filter element requires replacement every 30,000 km (18,000 miles) or annually if contaminated fuel is suspected. The air filter should be replaced every 25,000 km (15,000 miles). Coolant replacement interval is five years or 160,000 km (100,000 miles). The serpentine drive belt must be inspected every 40,000 km (25,000 miles) and replaced at 100,000 km (62,000 miles).
Glow plugs and injectors should be checked for function and leakage every 100,000 km (62,000 miles). For DPF-equipped models, periodic regeneration is automatic, but highway driving is recommended to ensure full regeneration. If the DPF warning light appears, the vehicle should be driven at sustained load until cleared or serviced using diagnostic equipment. Compression pressure should read approximately 2,800 kPa (406 psi) at cranking speed, with minimum allowable 2,200 kPa (319 psi). Engine idle speed is 750 ± 50 rpm. Timing chain is lifetime, but tensioner inspection is suggested after 200,000 km (124,000 miles).
