General Technical Data
The Toyota 12H-T engine is a six cylinder
inline turbocharged diesel engine designed for heavy duty vehicles such
as the Toyota Land Cruiser series. It represents the peak of mechanical
diesel engineering by Toyota during the 1980s, combining direct fuel
injection, robust materials, and mechanical simplicity to ensure
durability and efficiency under severe operating conditions. This
document provides a detailed technical overview of the 12H-T engine,
describing its specifications, systems, maintenance data, and
applications.
The Toyota 12HT engine was introduced in the mid-1980s as the
turbocharged evolution of the naturally aspirated 2H diesel engine. The
objective was to increase output and efficiency while maintaining
reliability in demanding environments. The engine uses a single Toyota
CT26 turbocharger producing approximately 0.49 bar (7 psi) of boost.
The result is a maximum output of 100 kW (134
horsepower) at 3500 revolutions per minute and a maximum torque of 315
Nm (232 lb-ft) at 1800 revolutions per minute. The 12H-T was widely
recognized for its smooth operation, strong low speed torque, and long
service life, making it one of the most popular Toyota diesel engines
for off road and utility use.
The 12H-T is an inline six cylinder engine with an overhead valve design
operated by pushrods and rocker arms. It uses a single camshaft located
in the block and a gear driven timing system. Displacement is 3980 cc,
equal to 4.0 liters or 243 cubic inches. The bore is 91.0 mm (3.58
inches) and the stroke is 102.0 mm (4.02 inches). The compression ratio
is 18.6 to 1. The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. The maximum governed
speed is 4000 revolutions per minute.
The block and head are cast iron, with replaceable valve seats and heavy
duty valve guides. The crankshaft is forged steel, nitrided for surface
hardness, and supported by seven main bearings. Connecting rods are
forged steel and pistons are aluminum alloy with reinforced ring lands
and oil cooling galleries. The combustion system is direct injection,
with a toroidal cavity in the piston crown to promote efficient mixing
of fuel and air.
The dry weight of the engine is approximately 355 kg (783 lbs). Overall
dimensions are 1010 mm in length (39.8 inches), 680 mm in width (26.8
inches), and 800 mm in height (31.5 inches). Oil capacity is 9.0 liters
(9.5 US quarts), and cooling system capacity is 13.0 liters (13.7 US
quarts). Idle speed is approximately 700 plus or minus 50 revolutions
per minute.
Fuel System
The fuel system of the Toyota 12HT is a mechanically governed direct
injection system. It uses a Bosch type VE rotary distributor injection
pump driven by the timing gear. The pump incorporates an all speed
mechanical governor and an aneroid device to compensate fuel delivery
according to boost pressure. Injection timing is mechanically set and
adjustable through the pump mounting flange. Typical static injection
timing is 1.4 mm plunger lift before top dead center.
Fuel is supplied by a mechanical lift pump that draws fuel through a
primary filter and water separator. A secondary full flow fuel filter is
mounted near the injection pump. The injectors are pintle type nozzles
with an opening pressure of approximately 185 bar (2680 psi). The system
operates at injection pressures of up to 17000 kPa (2465 psi). Cold
start assistance is provided by sheathed type glow plugs controlled by a
relay and timer circuit, automatically preheating for 5 to 10 seconds
depending on ambient temperature.
The direct injection arrangement allows higher thermal efficiency and
easier cold starting compared to the older indirect injection engines.
The fuel system is calibrated for standard automotive diesel with a
cetane number of 45 or greater. The injection pump is lubricated by the
same diesel fuel it delivers and requires clean, water free fuel for
long life.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a full pressure wet sump design. A gear type
oil pump driven from the crankshaft draws oil through a metal mesh
strainer and delivers it under pressure through a full flow oil filter
to the main oil gallery. Oil is distributed to the crankshaft main
bearings, connecting rod bearings, camshaft bearings, rocker arms, and
turbocharger. The turbocharger has a dedicated pressure feed line and
gravity drain to the crankcase. Under piston cooling jets spray oil to
the underside of each piston for temperature control.
Normal operating oil pressure is approximately 350 kPa (51 psi) at 2000
revolutions per minute. A low pressure warning switch activates near 50
kPa (7 psi). Recommended oil is SAE 15W-40 meeting API CC or better. Oil
change intervals are every 5000 km (3000 miles) in severe use or 10000
km (6000 miles) in normal operation. The engine holds 9.0 liters (9.5 US
quarts) of oil including the filter.
Cooling System
The 12H-T cooling system is a liquid cooled, pressurized design with a belt driven centrifugal water pump. Coolant is circulated through the block and head, absorbing heat from the combustion chambers and exhaust ports. A thermostat regulates coolant flow to maintain optimal temperature. The thermostat begins to open at 82 C (180 degrees F) and is fully open at 95 C (203 degrees F).
The radiator is a cross flow copper brass type with a pressure cap rated at 83 to 108 kPa (12 to 16 psi). Cooling fan drive is via a viscous coupling. The system capacity is approximately 13 liters (13.7 quarts US). An overflow reservoir maintains proper coolant volume as temperature fluctuates.
Intake and Exhaust Systems
Air is drawn through a dry type replaceable paper air filter before entering the turbocharger. The Toyota CT26 turbocharger compresses intake air to approximately 0.49 bar (7 psi) and directs it into the intake manifold. There is no intercooler in the standard design. Boost control is managed by a wastegate actuator responding to manifold pressure.
The exhaust manifold is a six into one cast iron design optimized for pulse energy to efficiently drive the turbine. Exhaust gases exit through a 60 millimeter (2.36 inch) downpipe and heavy gauge steel exhaust system designed for durability in off road conditions.
Electrical and Starting Systems
The electrical system operates at 12 volts direct current with negative ground. The starter motor is a 2.5 kilowatt reduction gear type. The alternator produces 12 volts at 60 amperes and includes an internal voltage regulator. The engine uses six 11 volt glow plugs connected in parallel, controlled automatically by a timer and relay. Typical glow time is 5 to 10 seconds before cranking. Battery capacity is 100 ampere hours minimum, often using twin 12 volt batteries in parallel for high current capability in cold climates.
Other Systems
Accessory drive belts power the alternator, water pump, and power steering pump. Optional components include an air conditioning compressor and vacuum pump for brake booster operation. A mechanical tachometer drive is located on the timing case. Engine mounts are rubber isolated to reduce vibration transfer to the chassis. Some versions were equipped with an additional oil cooler for operation in tropical climates. The engine is compatible with both manual and automatic transmissions.
Dimensions and Weight
Overall length 1010 mm (39.8 inches). Width 680 mm (26.8 inches). Height 800 mm (31.5 inches). Dry weight 355 kg (783 lbs). With accessories installed, shipping weight is approximately 385 kg (849 lbs). Flywheel diameter is 325 mm (12.8 inches). Standard clutch size used in Land Cruiser HJ61 is 275 mm (10.8 inches).
Maintenance Data
Routine maintenance ensures the reliability and longevity of the 12HT engine. Engine oil and filter must be replaced at intervals of 5000 to 10000 km depending on conditions. Valve clearance is adjusted every 20000 km (12000 miles) with the engine cold. Intake and exhaust valve clearance is 0.30 mm (0.012 inches). The fuel filter should be changed every 20000 km or every 12 months.
The air cleaner element should be inspected every 5000 km and replaced as required. Cooling system coolant should be replaced every two years or 40000 km using a 50 percent ethylene glycol antifreeze mixture. Drive belts should be checked for wear and tension at every oil change. The turbocharger requires no separate maintenance but depends on clean oil and regular service intervals.
Tightening Torques
Main bearing cap bolts 137 Nm (101 lb-ft). Connecting rod bolts 68 Nm (50 lb-ft). Cylinder head bolts 118 Nm (87 lb-ft) applied in three stages from the center outward. Flywheel bolts 147 Nm (108 lb-ft). Injector holder 59 Nm (44 lb-ft). Glow plug 15 Nm (11 lb-ft). Oil drain plug 39 Nm (29 lb-ft). Rocker cover bolts 9 Nm (7 lb-ft). Crankshaft pulley bolt 343 Nm (253 lb-ft). All fasteners must be tightened using a calibrated torque wrench on clean lightly oiled threads. Cylinder head re torque after 1000 km was recommended on early versions to ensure proper gasket seating.
Vehicle Applications
The Toyota 12H-T was primarily used in heavy duty Land Cruiser models. These included the Land Cruiser HJ61 produced from 1985 to 1990, which featured full time four wheel drive and luxury trim, and the HJ60 produced from 1985 to 1987 in export markets. It was also fitted to certain Land Cruiser 70 series variants such as the HJ75 and HJ77 workhorse models.
Beyond automotive use, the engine was adapted for industrial and marine applications where continuous power and reliability were essential. In marine service, derated versions operated at 2500 revolutions per minute producing about 75 kW (100 horsepower) with modified cooling and corrosion resistant fittings.
