The Mercury Verado 450R is an extraordinary
outboard that redefines performance expectations. Based on the proven
and robust 4.6-liter V8 block, it is transformed by a water-cooled
supercharger and dual intercoolers that deliver extraordinary power and
torque. The result is explosive acceleration and massive torque that
translates into stunning real-world performance; Mercury reports a 40
percent torque increase over the 400R, enabling boats to achieve plane
faster and maintain speed through demanding conditions.
This immense power is delivered with the legendary Verado smoothness, as
the Advanced MidSection (AMS) with perimeter mounts virtually eliminates
vibration transmission to the hull. The 450R is offered with a choice of
gearcases - the heavy-duty 5.44-inch or the race-proven Sport Master -
both with a 1.60:1 gear ratio designed for high-speed applications
exceeding 70 knots.
Fully integrated with SmartCraft Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) and
available with Joystick Piloting featuring Skyhook, the 450R provides
not only blistering performance but also precise control and advanced
station-keeping capabilities. For boaters who demand the absolute
pinnacle of four-stroke outboard performance, the Verado 450R stands
alone at the summit.

The foundation of the 450R is the robust and proven V8 platform,
upgraded to withstand the stresses of 450 Hp.
Cylinder Block: The engine utilizes a proven 4.6-liter 64-degree V8
block, the same architecture found in the highly successful Verado
250-300hp range. This robust foundation provides the durability
necessary for supercharged high-performance applications.
Cylinder Head and Valvetrain: The engine features advanced cylinder
heads with Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC) operating 32 valves. This
configuration optimizes airflow into and out of the combustion chambers,
contributing significantly to the engine's power output across the
entire RPM range.
The fuel system is specifically calibrated for the 450R's
high-performance demands. It uses a computer-controlled Electronic Fuel
Injection (EFI) system for precise fuel metering under all loads. The
engine's computer manages this process, integrating with the electronic
boost control and dual intercoolers to deliver a seamless and explosive
power curve.
The engine utilizes an integrated wet sump lubrication system with a
high-capacity oil cooler to manage temperatures under extreme loads. It
requires NMMA Certified FCW SAE 25W-50, a high-performance formulation
designed to withstand the extreme temperatures and shear forces present
in this supercharged application. The total oil capacity is 6.6 Liters.
Cooling is managed by a high-flow water-cooled system with thermostat
control, critical for maintaining safe operating temperatures at high
power outputs. The system features a high-capacity oil cooler and a
special poppet valve for improved water flow.
The dual intercoolers ensure the correct cooling of the powerful thermal
unit, reducing intake temperatures and significantly increasing air
density for greater power.
| Mid Section and Lower Unit |
Advanced MidSection (AMS): Features heavy-duty guide plates and
stiffened engine mounts for superior high-speed handling. The AMS
cradles the powerhead on perimeter mounts, moving the engine mounts
outward and aft. This design isolates the powerhead from the transom,
drastically reducing vibration and noise transmission to the hull for an
exceptionally smooth ride.
Gearcase Options: The 450R is offered with two distinct gearcase
options, both with a 1.60:1 reduction ratio. Sport Master Gearcase: A
race-proven gearcase designed for more extreme applications and speeds
exceeding 70 knots, available with straight or cambered skeg options.
5.44" HD Gearcase: The heavy-duty gearcase for traditional
high-performance applications.
Gearcase Ratio: 1.60:1.
Exhaust System: Through prop.
The Verado 450R is fitted with a heavy-duty power trim and tilt system
with SmartCraft programmable tilt. This allows for precise adjustment of
the engine angle for optimal boat performance, handling, and shallow
water operation.
Maximum Trim Range: 20° (-6° to 14°).
Maximum Tilt Range: 73° (-6° to 67°).
Propeller selection is critical for the 450R and depends heavily on the
gearcase choice and boat application. The correct propeller must allow
the engine to operate within its 5800-6400 RPM full-throttle range. The
specific pitch and diameter are determined by factors such as boat
weight, hull design, and intended use, and are best selected using the
Mercury Propeller Selector or dealer expertise.
Shaft Length Options:
20 inches (508 mm).
25 inches (635 mm).
30 inches (762 mm).
Dry Weight (Lightest Model): The lightest configuration of the Verado
450R has a dry weight of 689 lbs (313 kg). With power steering, the
weight is approximately 320 kg.
Every 100 hours:
Change engine oil and replace the oil filter.
Check the outboard for tightness to the boat transom.
Inspect thermostat visually for corrosion and/or for a broken spring.
Check engine water separating fuel filter for contaminants.
Clean and/or replace filter.
Drain and replace gearcase lubricant.
Check power steering fluid.
Inspect battery.
Check wiring and connectors.
Every 300 hours:
Replace water pump impeller.
Check power trim fluid.
Replace high‑pressure in‑line fuel filter.
Replace spark plugs.
Replace accessory drive belt.
Propeller Nut (HD Gearcase): 55 lb-ft.
Anode Screws: 50 lb-in.
Engine Oil Drain Plug: 20 lb-ft.
Spark Plugs: 20 lb-ft.
High-Performance Center Consoles and Catamarans: Ideal for multi-engine
setups on offshore performance boats, delivering exceptional speed and
handling. Quad 450R installations are common on vessels exceeding 45
feet. Luxury Cruisers and Day Boats: Powers luxury vessels like the
Wallytender48X, achieving speeds exceeding 54 knots with exceptional
efficiency.
Offshore Fishing Boats: Delivers the power to reach distant grounds
quickly with the legendary Verado smoothness and quiet operation.
Multi-Engine Setups: Popular in twin, triple, and quad configurations,
benefiting from DTS features and Joystick Piloting compatibility. The
26-inch center spacing is specifically designed for multi-engine
applications, allowing boaters to install significantly more power with
less weight than competitor configurations.
