The powerhead of the Evinrude G2 140 features an inline three-cylinder
block cast from high-strength, corrosion-resistant materials. The
1.9-liter displacement represents a significant increase over previous
designs, providing enhanced torque and power throughout the operating
range. The cylinder bore measures 98 mm, and the piston stroke is 82.6
mm, contributing to the engine's oversquare design which reduces piston
speed at higher RPM and increases component lifespan.
The pistons are manufactured using an alloy originally developed for
NASA's space program that is significantly stronger than traditional
materials, providing exceptional durability and heat resistance. As a
two-stroke engine, it utilizes a reed valve induction system with
advanced direct fuel injection. A key innovation on this powerhead is
the incorporation of a pair of balance gears that cancel primary engine
vibration, resulting in exceptionally smooth operation at all RPMs.
The engine does not include the RAVE (Rotax Adjustable Valve Exhaust)
system found on the 150 HP version, which accounts for the power
difference at the top end. The powerhead is designed for long life and
reliability, with fewer moving parts than comparable four-stroke
engines, eliminating valves, camshafts, belts, and timing mechanisms
that require adjustment or replacement.
The fuel system is centered around Evinrude's advanced E-TEC direct
injection technology with stratified low RPM combustion mode.
High-pressure fuel injectors, precisely controlled by the EMM, deliver a
finely atomized fuel spray directly into the combustion chambers at
pressures up to 800 psi. This system is optimized to produce a uniform
dispersion of very fine fuel droplets that encourage efficient and
complete combustion.
At low RPM, the engine operates in a stratified combustion mode,
creating a controlled fuel cloud near the spark plug for exceptional
fuel economy, reduced emissions, and idle smoothness. Only a small
amount of fuel, described as champagne bubbles, is injected into the
smaller top section of the cylinder, resulting in fuel efficiency twice
as good under 1000 rpm compared to conventional designs.
At high rpm, the engine switches to homogeneous combustion where more
fuel is injected to the whole cylinder, producing excellent mid- and
high-range torque and power. The engine is designed to operate on
standard 87 octane unleaded gasoline. The fuel system includes an
internal fuel filter that also functions as a fuel-water separator.
Lubrication is managed by a sophisticated multi-point targeted oiling
system. An electric oil pump, controlled by the EMM, draws oil from the
integral tank and injects it directly onto critical engine components
based on real-time engine speed and load demands. Oil is not mixed with
the fuel; lubrication is its own completely separate system, sending a
carefully metered amount of oil through clear tubes to bathe the
cylinder walls as needed.
This system ensures precise lubrication while minimizing oil consumption
and emissions. An on-engine oil tank with a capacity of 1.9 gallons (7.2
liters) is positioned under the powerhead for easy access through a
snap-off top panel. The tank holds enough oil for 50 to 60 hours of
engine run-time, a full season for most boaters.
The recommended lubricant is XPS Marine XD100 oil, a fully synthetic oil
specifically formulated for E-TEC G2 engines to maximize performance and
reduce carbon deposits. The system eliminates the need for oil changes,
oil filters, and the disposal of used crankcase oil, contributing to the
engine's maintenance-free ownership experience.
The cooling system is a pressure and temperature-controlled water-cooled
design. A high-capacity water pump in the lower unit circulates water
through extensive water jackets in the cylinder block and cylinder head.
The system uses a two-stage design controlled to maintain optimal
operating temperature across all engine speeds.
A freshwater flushing line is integrated into the engine design under
the removable top cowling, allowing easy connection of a garden hose for
flushing the cooling system after operation in salt or polluted water.
The EMM continuously monitors engine temperature and will activate the
S.A.F.E. (Speed Adjusting Friction Elimination) limp-home mode to reduce
RPM and protect the engine if an overheat condition is detected,
allowing the operator to return to port at reduced speed.
| Mid Section and Lower Unit |
The mid-section houses the driveshaft and exhaust tube, connecting the
powerhead to the lower unit. Unlike the larger V6 G2 models, the
1.9-liter G2 models feature a conventional midsection with a hydraulic
trim ram rather than the helix device. The midsection incorporates a
standard steering pivot with a steering arm that accepts cable or
hydraulic steering input, with optional helix power-steering available
to significantly reduce effort.
The lower unit features a redesigned design with shallow-water pickups
that anglers will appreciate. The straight leading edge is designed to
shed weeds effectively. Anodes are placed prominently throughout for
corrosion protection. The anti-ventilation plate has been shortened and
positioned further aft to permit better water flow around the propeller
while still preventing ventilation in rough conditions, allowing the
boat to stay on plane at lower speeds.
The exhaust is split, going through a muffler box at idle and through
the propeller hub below the waterline when the engine is above idle. The
gearcase features a forward-neutral-reverse shifting mechanism and is
filled with Ultra-HPF gear fluid, which can continue to lubricate even
if contaminated by up to 25 percent water.
The Evinrude G2 140 is equipped with Power Trim and Tilt as standard
equipment, with both automatic and manual operation available. This
hydraulic system allows the operator to adjust the engine angle for
optimal boat performance, acceleration, and shallow-water operation. The
trim range is from -6 deg to +15 deg, providing precise adjustment of
the boat's running attitude.
The tilt range extends to 81 deg, offering ample clearance for beaching,
launching, or trailering. The system includes iTrim, an automatic trim
optimization feature that adjusts engine angle for optimal performance
and fuel efficiency based on operating conditions. Multiple engine
installations can be equipped for counter-rotation operation with
specific model configurations available.
Proper propeller selection is critical to allow the engine to operate
within its 5000-6000 RPM full-throttle range under normal load
conditions. Evinrude developed two all-new propeller families
specifically for the 1.9-liter G2 engines: the RX3 and RX4 series. The
RX3 is a three-bladed propeller optimized for all-around performance and
fuel efficiency, making it the standard equipment choice, particularly
well-suited for the i-Dock joystick control system.
The RX4 is a four-bladed stainless steel propeller designed for maximum
traction and rough water performance, producing superior bow lift and
maintaining grip in turns. The RX4 features Variable Vent Port (VVP)
technology and is available in various pitch sizes with a 14-inch
diameter.
These propellers are built exclusively for the 3-cylinder 1.9L 115 HO,
140, and 150 HP G2 engines and do not fit V6 models. The specific
propeller selection depends on boat type, intended use, and load
conditions. The propeller nut torque specification must be verified from
service documentation.
Shaft Length Options: 20 inches (508 mm) and 25 inches (635 mm)
Weight: Ranges from 390 lbs (177 kg) to 401 lbs (182 kg) depending on
model and configuration
Mounting Centers: Minimum 26 inches (660 mm)
The Evinrude G2 140 is engineered for minimal maintenance requirements,
representing one of the most significant ownership advantages of the
E-TEC system. A key benefit is no scheduled dealer maintenance required
for the first five years or 500 hours of normal recreational use. The
engine features an auto-winterization mode that simplifies long-term
storage, eliminating the need for manual fuel system treatment, and can
be activated through the Evinrude iTouch display or BRP eLink smartphone
app.
There are no oil changes, oil filters, or valve adjustments required
over the life of the engine. The EMM continuously monitors engine
systems and stores fault codes for diagnostic purposes. Recommended
pre-launch checks include verifying oil level through the digital gauge
display. Routine maintenance items after the initial five-year period
are minimal, with annual or 100-hour service intervals recommended
thereafter.
The engine includes a limp-home mode that activates if the engine
overheats or malfunctions, allowing reduced-speed operation to return to
port. The cooling system can be flushed using the integrated freshwater
flushing port. The engine has no break-in requirement, allowing full
performance from the first start. An expansion tank for gearcase
lubricant under the cowl indicates both lubricant level and water
contamination, addressing a common cause of engine failure.
