General Technical Data
The Evinrude E-TEC 130 is a direct-injection
two-stroke outboard that combines robust power delivery with exceptional
fuel economy and minimal maintenance requirements. Designed specifically
for boats in the 16 to 23-foot range where 40 percent of all outboard
boats are sold, this engine provides a compelling alternative to heavier
four-stroke alternatives.
The E-TEC 130 weighs the same as its 115 Hp counterpart but features a
35 millimeter higher profile to accommodate a revised air intake system
that draws cooler air for improved combustion efficiency. The engine
starts instantly whether hot or cold with no visible oil smoke during
operation, and its stratified combustion mode at low revolutions
provides remarkable fuel economy during trolling and no-wake operation.
The dual-stage tuned exhaust system with an electronically controlled
valve delivers exceptional torque throughout the operating range, with a
noticeable power surge as the exhaust re-tunes at higher engine speeds.
During independent testing on a Cruise Craft Explorer 575 with a test
weight of 1650 kg including four adults, the E-TEC 130 demonstrated
impressive performance metrics including trolling fuel consumption of
only 0.7 litres per hour at 600 RPM and a clean plane achieved at 3200
RPM.
The Evinrude 130 ETEC is a 60-degree V4, two-stroke outboard engine
utilizing Evinrude's proprietary E-TEC direct fuel injection technology.
The engine produces 130 propeller Hp at 5750 RPM, with a power output of
95.6 kW at the same engine speed. The full throttle operating range is
5500 to 6000 RPM. Engine displacement is 1727 cc (105.4 cubic inches),
achieved with a bore of 91 mm (3.601 inches) and a stroke of 66 mm
(2.588 inches). The charging system produces 133 amperes total output
with 50 amperes net dedicated for battery charging and accessory
operation.
Available shaft lengths include 20 inches and 25 inches to accommodate
various transom heights, with specific model designations including
E130DGL and E130DSL for 20-inch shaft configurations and E130DPX and
E130DCX for 25-inch shaft configurations. The gear ratio is 2.00:1 for
20-inch shaft models and 2.25:1 for 25-inch shaft models. The engine is
designed to operate on standard 87 octane unleaded fuel and meets EPA
2013, CARB 3-Star, and EU emissions standards. The idle speed in neutral
is 580 RPM plus or minus 50 RPM.
Powerhead
The powerhead is constructed around a 60-degree V4 cylinder block with loop-charged induction, a configuration that optimizes fuel scavenging and power production. The bore and stroke dimensions of 91 mm by 66 mm provide a oversquare design that promotes efficient combustion and responsive throttle operation.
Unlike conventional two-stroke engines, the E-TEC design eliminates the need for intake and exhaust valves, relying instead on precisely timed port openings and advanced direct fuel injection timing to control the combustion process. The engine management system makes more than eight million calculations per second to optimize fuel delivery and ignition timing for current operating conditions.
The powerhead incorporates the E-TEC direct injection system with stratified low RPM combustion mode, which creates layers of air and fuel mixture for ultra-lean operation during trolling and low-speed running. The ignition system is IDI fast-rise inductive ignition, providing powerful spark across the entire operating range.
Cylinder Block
The E-TEC 130 utilizes a high-pressure direct fuel injection system managed by an electronic control module (ECM) specifically calibrated for this application. The fuel system operates in two distinct modes depending on engine speed and load.
At low revolutions, the system employs stratified combustion, where layers of air and fuel mixture are carefully controlled to achieve extremely lean ratios for exceptional fuel economy during trolling and slow-speed maneuvering. As engine speed increases, the system transitions to homogeneous combustion for maximum power output.
Fuel is delivered through a single-stage direct fuel injection system that precisely meters the fuel charge for each cylinder based on real-time sensor inputs. The fuel induction system incorporates features that ensure air remains cool for higher density and better combustion efficiency, with air directed through a plastic shroud atop the flywheel directly to the intake rather than passing through the powerhead area.
Lubrication System
The 130 ETEC employs a sophisticated multi-point targeted oiling system
that represents a significant advancement over conventional two-stroke
lubrication methods. The system delivers oil precisely where it is
needed through multiple distribution points, ensuring optimal
lubrication of crankshaft bearings, connecting rod bearings, and
cylinder walls under all operating conditions.
The recommended lubricant is Evinrude XD100 oil, a high-performance
synthetic blend specifically formulated for E-TEC engines. While XD100
is preferred, Evinrude/Johnson XD50 or XD30 can also be used, and if
Evinrude/Johnson brand oils are unavailable, any oil meeting NMMA TC-W3
certification standards is acceptable. The oil system includes a
pressure transducer rather than a simple switch, providing sophisticated
monitoring capabilities that can detect any problems in oil flow and
lubrication.
If issues are detected, the engine management system places the engine
into S.A.F.E. (Speed Adjusting Failsafe Electronics) mode, allowing the
engine to operate for up to five hours with no oil to permit safe return
to port. Oil tank capacity is available in 10 liter, 3 liter, or 1.8
liter options depending on installation requirements.
Cooling System
The cooling system on the E-TEC 130 is a pressure and
temperature-controlled water-cooled design that maintains optimal
operating temperatures across all conditions. A rubber-impeller water
pump, driven by the vertical driveshaft within the lower unit, draws
water from the surrounding environment and circulates it through the
engine's cooling passages.
The system incorporates thermostats and a pressure valve to regulate
flow and maintain proper operating temperature. The cooling system
features self-flushing capabilities that help purge debris when the
engine is running at speed, reducing the potential for blockage and
overheating. The water pump should be inspected or replaced according to
the maintenance schedule, with more frequent inspection required for
operation in saltwater or polluted water environments.
Mid Section and Lower Unit
The midsection houses the exhaust tuner and incorporates a distinctive
feature of the 130 Hp model: a dual-stage tuned exhaust system with an
electronically controlled valve. Below 4500 RPM, the tuning pulses
travel a relatively long distance to maximize bottom-end torque and
acceleration.
Above this engine speed, the valve alters position and the exhaust
pulses travel a much shorter distance to increase top-end power,
effectively providing the benefits of variable exhaust tuning similar to
variable intake valve timing in four-stroke engines. This system is
exclusive to the 130 Hp and 200 Hp E-TEC models.
The lower unit contains the forward, neutral, and reverse gears with a
gear ratio of 2.00:1 for 20-inch shaft models and 2.25:1 for 25-inch
shaft models. The gearcase lubricant capacity is 950 ml for DPL, DSL,
DHL, and HSL models (S2 gearcase) and 970 ml for DPX, DBX, DHX, and DCX
models (O-series and O-CR gearcases).
Recommended lubricant is Evinrude/Johnson HPF XR gearcase lubricant,
with HPF Pro recommended for high-performance or commercial
applications. Sacrificial anodes are located on the lower unit and
engine components to provide galvanic corrosion protection in saltwater
environments and must be inspected annually in saltwater applications.
Trim and Tilt System
The Evinrude E-TEC 130 is equipped with FasTrak power trim and tilt as
standard equipment. The trim range is negative 4 deg to positive 17 deg,
allowing fine adjustment of engine angle for optimal hull performance
under varying load and water conditions. The tilt range is 75 deg,
providing complete out-of-water positioning for trailering, mooring, or
servicing.
The system uses Evinrude/Johnson Biodegradable TNT Fluid with a capacity
of 622 ml. The manual release valve is installed with new O-rings and
tightened to 45 to 55 lb-in (5 to 6 Nm), and the fill plug is tightened
to the same specification after filling and system cycling. Regular
inspection of the trim and tilt system and fluid level is included in
the maintenance schedule.
Propeller Information
Propeller selection for the E-TEC 130 must allow the engine to operate
within its specified full-throttle RPM range of 5500 to 6000 RPM when
the boat is normally loaded. The engine utilizes propellers with a
spline configuration matching the gearcase. For 20-inch shaft models
with the standard gearcase, the propeller nut should be tightened to 120
to 144 lb-in (13.6 to 16.3 Nm). For 25-inch shaft models and all V6
models, the propeller nut must be tightened to 70 to 80 lb-ft (95 to 109
Nm) and secured with a cotter pin.
If the cotter pin holes in the propeller nut and propeller shaft are not
aligned, the nut must be tightened further until alignment is achieved
rather than loosened to align. During documented testing on a Cruise
Craft Explorer 575, a 17-inch pitch Viper stainless steel propeller
provided excellent performance, while a 17-inch Solas four-blade
propeller was used for comparison testing. Stainless steel propellers
are commonly preferred for their durability and performance
characteristics.
Dimensions and Weight
The Evinrude E-TEC 130 offers significant weight advantages over comparable four-stroke engines of similar power output. The engine weight is 177 kg (390 lbs) for 20-inch shaft models and 184 kg (405 lbs) for 25-inch shaft models. This represents a weight saving of 42 to 61 kg (93 to 135 lbs) compared to competing 150 Hp four-stroke engines that might otherwise be used to achieve similar performance. The physical dimensions reflect the 60-degree V4 configuration, with transom heights of 495 to 508 mm (19.5 to 20 inches) for long shaft models and 622 to 635 mm (24.5 to 25 inches) for extra-long shaft models.
Maintenance Data
The Evinrude E-TEC 130 is designed with remarkably simplified
maintenance requirements. For recreational users, no scheduled dealer
maintenance is required for three years or 300 hours of operation,
whichever occurs first. This includes no requirement for spring
tune-ups, no gearcase lubricant changes during this period, and no oil
changes whatsoever as the engine is a two-stroke design. The spark plugs
are advanced iridium-tipped units featuring a longer, more efficient
spark with a three-year or 300-hour service life.
The engine automatically performs its own fogging for storage through a
simple procedure that owners can execute without dealer involvement. The
maintenance schedule after the initial period includes inspection or
replacement of anti-corrosion anodes annually in saltwater applications,
replacement of the fuel filter, gearcase lubricant replacement,
lubrication of grease fittings and propeller shaft splines, inspection
of spark plugs, inspection of thermostats and pressure valve, and water
pump inspection or replacement.
The oil filter on V4 models requires periodic replacement. All
electrical and ignition wires should be inspected for wear or chafing,
and engine-to-transom mounting hardware should be re-torqued to 40
lb-ft. The engine features a break-in period that requires no special
operator procedures, as the engine management system provides additional
oil during the first two hours of operation above 2000 RPM.
Tightening Torques
The propeller nut requires different specifications based on model
configuration. For 20-inch 90 to 130 Hp V4 models with the standard
gearcase, tighten the propeller nut to 120 to 144 lb-in (13.6 to 16.3
Nm). For 25-inch models of the same Hp and all 135 to 300 Hp V6 models,
tighten the propeller nut to 70 to 80 lb-ft (95 to 109 Nm) and install a
new cotter pin with ends bent to secure.
The flywheel nut requires 100 to 115 lb-ft (136 to 156 Nm) of torque to
ensure the flywheel remains securely seated on the crankshaft taper
under all operating conditions.
Lower unit mounting bolts vary by size. Three-eighths inch bolts require
28 lb-ft, while seven-sixteenths inch bolts require 50 lb-ft.
Connecting rod bolts at the big end are critical fasteners that bear the
extreme loads of combustion and reciprocating mass. These bolts must be
torqued to 30 to 32 lb-ft, and new bolts must be installed whenever they
are removed and reinstalled.
Spark plugs are installed at 10 to 15 lb-ft. This torque value ensures
proper compression sealing while providing adequate heat transfer from
the spark plug to the cylinder head. Correct torque also prevents thread
damage in the aluminum cylinder head.
Cylinder head bolts are tightened to 19 to 25 lb-ft, applied in a
specific three-stage sequence following a crisscross pattern to ensure
even clamping force distribution across the cylinder head gasket.
The manual release valve on the trim system requires 45 to 55 lb-in (5
to 6 Nm) of torque, and the fill plug for the trim system is tightened
to the same specification after fluid level verification.
Boat Applications
The Evinrude E-TEC 130 is ideally suited for a wide range of boat types requiring reliable mid-range power with enhanced fuel efficiency and minimal maintenance. The engine performs exceptionally well on fiberglass runabouts, center console fishing boats, and lightweight aluminum craft in the 16 to 23-foot range where a significant portion of outboard boat sales occur. The power output and torque characteristics make it particularly effective for planing hulls that benefit from the engine's strong acceleration and cruising efficiency.
