The Evinrude E-TEC 115 is a lightweight and
powerful outboard known for its innovative direct injection technology,
which ensures smooth operation, reduced emissions, and impressive fuel
economy. It is engineered for versatility, providing strong acceleration
and torque suitable for fishing, cruising, and water sports.
Owners benefit from user-friendly features such as no scheduled dealer
maintenance for the first three years of normal recreational use, an
automatic winterization mode, and a debris-resistant cooling system. Its
60° V4 design contributes to a compact profile and quiet operation,
making it a popular choice for boaters seeking a dependable engine that
combines modern technology with proven durability.
The Evinrude 115 ETEC is built around a 60-degree V4 powerhead that
utilizes advanced direct fuel injection. This system is managed by an
Engine Management Module (EMM) that optimizes fuel delivery and ignition
for peak performance across the entire RPM range. The engine is
available in several models, denoted by suffix letters indicating shaft
length and other features: E115DSL, E115DGL, E115DPX, E115DGX, and
E115DCX.

The powerhead of the Evinrude E-TEC 115 features a V4 cylinder block
cast from corrosion-resistant materials. The 60-degree angle of the V
configuration allows for a compact and low-profile design. The cylinder
bore measures 3.62 inches (92 mm), and the piston stroke is 2.60 inches
(66 mm), contributing to the engine's 105.4 cubic inch (1.7L)
displacement.
As a two-stroke engine, it utilizes reed valves for intake. These
one-way valves are located in the intake manifold and control the
air-fuel mixture entering the crankcase. The system is simple, reliable,
and allows for high volumetric efficiency. The pistons themselves are
manufactured from a high-strength material originally developed by NASA,
providing exceptional durability and heat resistance. Internal
components such as connecting rods are micro-finished for reduced
friction, and piston rings feature a nickel/chrome face for extended
life.
The fuel system is centered around Evinrude's E-TEC direct injection
technology. High-pressure fuel injectors, controlled by the EMM, deliver
a precisely metered amount of fuel directly into the combustion
chambers. This system atomizes fuel into microscopic droplets for a more
complete and efficient burn.
At low RPM, the engine operates in a stratified combustion mode,
creating a rich fuel cloud near the spark plug and a leaner mixture
elsewhere for exceptional fuel economy and idle smoothness. The fuel
system includes a vapor separator to cool the fuel and minimize
vaporization, ensuring consistent fuel delivery. The engine is designed
to operate on standard 87 octane unleaded gasoline.
Lubrication is managed by a sophisticated multi-point, targeted oiling
system. An electric oil pump, controlled by the EMM, draws oil from a
remote tank and injects it directly onto critical engine components,
including main and connecting rod bearings, based on engine speed and
load. This system ensures precise lubrication while minimizing oil
consumption.
Several accessory oil tank sizes are available to suit different usage
patterns, including 1.8 gallon (6.8 L), 3 gallon (11.3 L), and 10 gallon
(37.85 L) tanks. The recommended lubricant is Evinrude/Johnson XD-100
oil, a fully synthetic oil specifically formulated for E-TEC engines to
maximize performance and reduce deposits. The lubrication system is
closed-loop, meaning there is no oil changes required.
The cooling system is a pressure and temperature-controlled water-cooled
design. A high-capacity water pump in the lower unit circulates water
through water jackets in the cylinder block and cylinder heads. The
system uses a two-stage design controlled by two thermostats and one
pressure valve. At low engine speeds, the thermostats regulate water
flow to maintain optimal operating temperature, opening fully around
143°F (62°C).
As engine speed increases, water pressure opens the relief valve at
approximately 2500 RPM, allowing a high-flow discharge of water to
provide enhanced cooling during high-speed operation. The Engine
Management Module (EMM) and vapor separator are also cooled by
circulated water to ensure their reliable operation and to stabilize
internal component temperatures.
| Mid Section and Lower Unit |
The mid-section houses the drive shaft and exhaust tube, connecting the
powerhead to the lower unit. It is designed for robust performance and
features a corrosion-resistant finish. The lower unit houses the
gearcase and water pump. The gearcase is filled with high-performance
lubricant and features a "F-N-R" shifting mechanism.
The gear ratio is available in 2.00:1 or 2.25:1 configurations,
depending on the specific model and its intended application.
High-output models may feature an SLE (Straight Leading Edge) gearcase
with nose-cone water pickups for increased water flow and cooling
capacity.
The Evinrude 115 E-TEC is equipped with a power trim and tilt system,
available as either the Trac-1 or FasTrak design. This hydraulic system
allows the operator to adjust the engine angle for optimal boat
performance and shallow-water operation. The trim range is from -4 deg
to +17 deg, allowing for precise adjustment of the boat's bow attitude.
The tilt range extends to 75 deg, providing ample clearance for
beaching, launching, or trailering. A manual release valve is integrated
into the system, allowing for manual raising or lowering of the engine
in the event of a power loss.
Proper propeller selection is critical to allow the engine to operate
within its 5500-6000 RPM full-throttle range under normal load. A wide
array of aluminum and stainless steel propellers are available to match
various boat types and performance requirements.
The propeller nut torque is critical for secure installation. When
installed directly against the gearcase, the nut should be torqued to
70-80 lb-ft. If a plastic washer is used, a lower torque specification
of 10 lb-ft applies to prevent damage to the washer.
Weight (Dry): 390 lbs (177 kg) to 405 lbs (184 kg), depending on model
and configuration
Shaft Length:
20 in (508 mm)
25 in (635 mm)
The Evinrude 115 E-TEC is engineered for minimal maintenance. A
significant benefit is that there is no scheduled dealer maintenance
required for the first three years or 300 hours of normal recreational
use. The engine features an auto-winterization mode that simplifies
long-term storage, eliminating the need for manual fuel system
treatment.
Recommended pre-launch checks include verifying oil level in the remote
tank and inspecting for any signs of damage or corrosion, particularly
in saltwater environments. The cooling system is self-flushing when the
engine is run in fresh water, or can be connected to garden hose flush
attachment.
The EMM continuously monitors engine systems and will activate the
S.A.F.E. (Speed Adjusting Friction Elimination) mode to reduce RPM and
protect the engine if an overheat condition or low oil pressure is
detected.
Recommended Fuel: 87 Octane Unleaded
Recommended Oil: Evinrude/Johnson XD-100
Break-in Procedure: No formal break-in period is required due to the
engine's precision manufacturing and lubrication system; however,
varying operating conditions during the first hours of use is
recommended.

The Evinrude E-TEC 115 is a highly versatile powerplant suitable for a
broad spectrum of boat types. It is an ideal choice for 17 to 21-foot
fiberglass and aluminum fishing boats, providing the power needed for
quick planing and efficient cruising. Its strong mid-range torque makes
it well-suited for light- to medium-weight center console boats and bay
boats used for inshore fishing. The engine is also a popular option for
pontoon boats, delivering ample power for carrying families and pulling
water skiers or tubers.
For operators preferring tiller steering, a digital tiller control model
is available for select variants, offering smooth shifting and easy
maneuverability for smaller craft or specialized fishing applications.
With its high-output charging system, it can easily support modern
electronics and onboard systems, making it a dependable choice for both
day boats and more extensively equipped cruising vessels.
