BMW M50B25 Troubleshooting

Engine will not start or starts up hard

No fuel in fuel tank - Fill fuel up.
Wrong fuel grade - Use quality gasoline.
Air in the fuel pipes - Bleed the fuel pipes.
Defective spark plug wire connection - Inspect the spark plug wire connection, replace or repair.
Spark plug is defective - Spark plug need to be replaced.
Defective ignition system - Check ignition and replace faulty components.
Fuel filter is dirty - Change fuel filter.
Dirty fuel lines - Clean fuel lines.
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Test fuel pump and change if necessary.
Fuel injectors are faulty or clogged - Test fuel injectors and change if necessary.
Low compression - Check and replace worn parts.

Engine runs unevenly

Defective ignition - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Clogged air filter - Change or clean air filter.
Defective spark plug - Change spark plug.
Dirty or defective fuel pump - Check fuel pump and change if required.
Improper valve clearance - Check and adjust.
Bad ignition timing - Adjust ignition timing correctly.
Low idle speed setting is not correct - Correct idle adjustment.

Engine starts and immediately shuts off

Damaged spark plug - Install new spark plug.
Clogged or defective fuel injectors - Service or replace fuel injectors.
Damaged ignition coil - Replace ignition coil as necessary.
Valve springs are bad or broken - Valve springs need to be changed.
Valves are stuck - Valves must be cleaned.

Engine overheated

Engine oil level is insufficient - Need to add engine oil.
Engine overload - Reduce engine load.
Fuel injectors are dirty - Clean or change fuel injectors.
Ignition timing is incorrect - Adjust ignition timing as required.
Valve setting is incorrect - Adjust valves as required.
Radiator fins are dirty or radiator cap is defective - Clean radiator or replace cap.
Low engine coolant - Add coolant fluid and inspect the cooling system for leaks.
Thermostat is defective - Change thermostat as required.
Water pump failure - Replace water pump.

Abnormal engine noise or knocking

Stale gasoline - Use correct fuel.
Engine overload - Load reducing required.
Low engine oil level - Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
Incorrectly set low idle speed - Need to adjust idle speed.
Fuel pump is damaged or dirty - Service or change fuel pump.
Crankshaft or main bearings failure - Install new parts as as required.
Valve clearance is improper - Need to adjust valve clearance.
Cylinder bore or piston rings are worn - Replace faulty parts.

Engine loses power

Fuel injectors are faulty or clogged - Service or change fuel injectors.
Dirty air filter element - Replace or clean air filter.
Clogged or defective fuel pump - Test fuel pump and replace if necessary.
Ignition system problems - Inspect ignition system and change failed components.
Defective cylinder head gasket - Install new head gasket.

Engine using too much gasoline
